Description

June 24; 1930. I c. w SMITH 1,768,379
TAG AND TAG HOLDING DEVICE Filed Dec. 11. 1929 I flea/ye 19/27/37? Patented June 24, 1930 GEORGE W. SMITH, OF NEOSHO FALLS, KANSAS TAG AND TAG-HOLDING DEVICE Application filed December 11, 1929. Serial No. 413,337.
- This invention relates to tag and holding apparatus.
' The object of this invention is to provide a tag and tag-holder for use in groceries and other stores, and for similar purposes, having improved means to apply and retain it in position.
Other objects of this invention are to dis p ense with the necessity of marking more than one article of a kind and the confu sion arising from associating the price mark with the wrong article, or to the shelf to which the price mark applies, and the intentional or accidental misapplication of price marks on the part of patrons or clerks.
A still further object of this invention is that the device which carries the tag or marking card also carries the container, i. e., the can, bottle, or carton, clamps them together and its adjustable to meet the re quirements of containers in use.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent as the description thereof given hereunder proceeds, reference being now had to the accompanying drawing wherein.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the tag and holding device, and
Figure 2 is a sectional View thereof taken on line 2-2, Figure 1.
The tag and holding device 10 is preferably make of a. light gauge sheet metal or any other suitable material, and comprises a vertical portion 11 and horizontal portion 12, the horizontal portion 12 being of a much greater length than the height of the vertical portion 11, as shown in Figure 1. The horizontal portion 12 is adapted to be placed on a shelf, not shown, and is preferably made of such a length as to substantially equal the width of marked article, whereby the vertical portion 11 will be in alignment with the edge of said shelf.
Attached to the outer surface ofthe vertical portion 11 is a U-shaped angle member 13, of sheet metal, the bight portion 14 of which is parallel to the bottom edge 15 of the tag and holding device 10 and spaced a short distance therefrom. The vertical arms 16 of the angle member 13 are Similarly spaced from the vertical edges of the vertical portion 14. The arms of the angle member 13 will serve as a guide and retaining means for a price tag 17 (with any desirable data thereon) to be inserted therein as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1. Slidably mounted on the horizontal portion 12 is a clamping member 18, comprising a vertical leg 19 and a horizontal leg 20, which has formed on the longitudinal edges thereof bent over ends defining grooves 21 which are adapted to slide over the longitudinal edges 22 of the horizontal portion 12.. The vertical leg 19 is made preferably ofa width slightly less than the width of the tag and holding device proper.
A single container such as a can, a bottle or a box, is placed on the horizontal portion 12 between the clamping member 18 and the vertical portion 11. In View of the fact that this single container may naturally be of Various sizes, the clamping member 18- likewise may be readily adjusted upon the horizontal portion 12, thereby accommodating the exact size of the particular container so placed upon the horizontal portion 12.
While a preferred embodiment of the device has been shown, the same is susceptible of numerous modifications within the scope of the appended claims. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is j l. A tag and holding device comprisinga short vertical portion and along horizontal portion integral therewith, a U-shaped angle member rigidly attached to the front surface of said vertical portion and defining guide means with said surface for the insertion of a tag, and a clamping member slidably mounted on the'horizontal portion of said device to hold an article between said clamping member and said vertical 7 face of said verticalv portion and defining guide means with said surface for the insertion of a tag, a clamping member slidably mounted on the horizontal portion of said device said clamping member comprising a horizontal leg and a Vertical leg, said hori- "zonta1 leg having longitudinal bent over portions defining grooves which are adapted to slide over the longitudinal edges of said horizontal portion. a
In testimony whereof I affix my signa- 10 tLlIG.
GEORGE W. SMITH.
