QFFICE v TOOL HEAD AND FASTENER Application filed August 3, 1927. Serial No. 210,404.
This invention relates to tools and more particularly to a tool of the type including a striking or cutting head and a handle for the same.
One object of the invention is to provide the head of the tool with improved means to firmly but releasably retainthe head upon its handle and prevent danger of the head accidentally working loose from the handle when the tool is in use.
Another object of the invention is to form portions of the securing means integral with the head so that they will not become detached from the head.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means to bind the head carried portions of the fastener means to the handle and prevent danger of the hinder working out of proper engagement with the head carried elements.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing a hammer having its head secured to improved fastener means;
1 1g. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with the handle shown in elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of *ig. 1.
The implement has been illustrated as a claw hammer, although the invention may be incorporated in a sledge hammer, axe, pick, or any other similar implement and inhaving the usual eye 2 to receive the forward end portion of the handle 3. The handle is preferably formed of wood and adjacent the forward portion 4 which fits into the eye of the head is reduced in thickness, as shown in Figs. 1 and Arms 5 which are formed integral with the head 1 project rearwardly therefrom at opposite sides of the handle and have their rear end portions bent to form hooks 6. The arms 5 have suflicient resiliency to permit them to be pressed into close binding engagement with opposite side faces of the handle, as shown in Fig. 2, and from an inspection of this figure it will be readily arms are bound in close contacting engagement with opposite faces of the handle the head will be very securely held upon the handle.
In order to bind the arms to the handle, there has been provided a U-shaped clamp 7 which is formed of resilient metal and straddles the handle with its arms 8 extending across the arms 5 beneath the hooks 6. By referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the arms of the clamp project from the handle and are formed with alined openings through which a bolt 9 is passed. carries the usual nut 10 which when tightened will cause the arms to be drawn together and the clamp tightened about the handle to press the arms 5 of the head into tight binding engagement with the handle. Since the clamp is disposed about the reduced portion of the handle and the handle increases in width from the clamp towards the head as shown in Fig. 1, the arms and clamp will be prevented from moving forwardly upon the handle and, therefore, the head will be prevented from slipping forwardly off the handle when the implement is in use When it is necessary to remove the head or replace a broken handle, it is merely necessary to remove the bolt 9 and the clamp can then be removed and the head separated from the handle.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A tool comprising a head having a handle-receiving eye, a handle'having one end fitted into the eye of the head and having This bolt a reduced portion adjacent the head, arms extending from the head along the opposite sides of the handle and having their free end portions formed into hooks facing the head, a clamping band fitted around the reduced portion of the handle and extending across the arms, the hooked end portions of the arms passing between the handle and the band, across the edge of the band and back against the outer side of the band, and means connecting the ends of the band for closing the band upon the handle and said arms.
In testimony whereof I affix my (Mas) EMMA F. NICHOLS.
