To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RAYMOND W. SEELYE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brainerd, county of Crow Wing, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to a tool of the compound type, and aims to provide a novel and improved implement combining a shovel, pick, hoe, 01' mattock, and hammer, and consisting of a minimum number of parts, in order that the tool can be readily carried or transported in small space.

The tool is intended particularly for use by tourists, prospectors, bushmen, and the like, in order that they may carry the unitary tool instead of a number of individual tools, the construction being such that the tool can'be quickly converted for use either as a shovel, pick, hoe, or mattock, or as a hammer.

Another object is the provision of such a tool using but a single handle and having novel means for the attachment of the handle in diffierent positions when using the tool for different purposes.

A further object is the provision of a combination tool having a head provided with an opening to receive the handle when using the tool as a pick, hammer, mattock, or hoe, and novel means whereby the handle can be applied to the head and pickor similar blade when the tool is used as a shovel, to provide a substantial construction ineither position of the handle.

A still further object is the provision of novel means for interchangeably attaching to the head, a shovel blade and hammer member.

It is also the object of the invention to provide a novel assemblage of the component elements, requiring but a simple and inexpensive construction, with a minimum number of parts, and providing for a practical, serviceable and efficient combination tool of the nature indicated.

With the foregoing and other objectsin view which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter des r b and claime it being Hederstood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the tool as used as a shovel;

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a metallic head 1 which can be cast, forged or otherwise manufactured, said head having a transverse socket 2 provided with an opening or eye 3 therethrough, preferably of elliptical form. This opening is similar to that used on ordinary picks and like tools, and the head 1 terminates at one end in a pick blade 4 or its equivalent, while at the opposite end, the head terminates in an attaching shank 5 of arcuate cross-section, with the concaved side facing outwardly. The end of the shank 5 is reduced and tapered to a point, as at 6.

The shovel blade 7 may be of any suitable onstruction, being preferably stamped from sheet-metal, and having at its rear edge, a roll 8 struck therefrom, and merging at its forward end into the body of the blade. A socket piece 9 is riveted or otherwise secured on the blade 7 and is of arched form, said piece 9 overhanging the in said shank and the shank abutting therear end of the piece 9, as seen in Fig. 4:. Thus, the shank 5 straddles the roll 8 and the end of the shank fits snugly in the socket, to provide arigid joint, and. a bolt 10 or other securing element is engaged through apertures in the shank 5 and roll 8 to clamp said-parts together.

A wooden or other suitable handle is provided, and if same is of wood, it is preferably provided with a sleeve 12 on its outer end to reinforce the same. This sleeve 12 is ota shape to fit snugly in the opening 3, and is tapered inwardly. The outer end of the handle 11 and sleeve 12 is of concavedshape as at 13, so as to fit the side 01" the socket 2 adjacent to the pick blade A, and the pick blade and handle fit snugly together, as seen in Fig. 2, when they are assembled for using as a shovel. Said outer end of the handle has a hook or finger 14: projecting therefrom to be inserted through an aperture 15 in one side oft-he socket 2 adjacent to the pick blade 1. Thus, the hook can be inserted through the aperture 15. by a swinging movement, when the handle l1 and pick blade 4 are swung together, thus locking said parts together against longitudinal separation, since the hook 14 cannot pull straight out through the aperture. 15.

A clamping band 16 is used on the handle 11 and the same is slidable thereon, and has an offset portion 17 to receive and sit astridc the pick bladed, and a bolt 18 or other tightening member for clamping said band on the handle. Thus, when the handle and head are assembled, and the. handle and pick blade swung together, the band 16 can be slipped onto the handle and over the blade 4, and the band then tightened on the handle, which will hold said handle and blade 4 tightly together, to use the tool as a shovel, it being noted that the blade 4 will brace the handle 11 and take up the strains, so that there is little tendency for the handle to break. This provides a very substantial shovel. By loosening the band 16 and slipping it ofi'fof. the blade 1, said blade and handle can be swung apart, to withdraw the hook 14211 1 0111 the head 1. Then, by again placing the band 16 on the handle and moving. itagainst the socket Qand tightening saidband, it will serve to hold the handle 11' firmlytin place in the head, thereby preventing it from coming loose when using the tool, as: a. pick, mattock, or hoe, as seen in Figs. 7*and 9. This also provides a substantial. construction.

In; order. that thetool canbe used as a hammer also, a separate hammer member 19 isprovided, andthesame can .be readilycarrled in the pock'etywhile the tool proper is carried, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, as a-single implement, or as a shovel which can be easily converted into a pick, mattock, or hoe by simply changing the handle with respect to the head as above explained. The hammer member 19 is a block of metal of suitable size and shape, and provided with a re cess 20 extending into the same from its rear end, said rear end of the member 19 being provided with an extension 21 of arcuate cross-section similar to the roll 8 of the blade 7, so as to fit the shank 5 of the head 1 in the same manner, while the tip 6 of the shank enters the recess 20 in the same manner as it entered the socket of the blade 7.

The same bolt 10 is used for clamping the extension orportion 21 of the member 19 to the shank 5. Theiblade 7 and hammer 19 can thus be used interchangeably as conditions may require.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. A combination tool having a head pro: vided with an opening and a blade extending therefrom, a handle to fit against said blade and abut said head and also insertible lengthwise said opening at an angle with the blade to bring one end within said opening, and a clamp slidable on the handle to engage either the blade or inner side of the head for securing the handle to said blade or head in its corresponding positions.

2. A combination tool comprising a head having an opening and a shovel blade and a pick blade at its opposite ends, a handle adapted to bear against the pick blade and abut the head at one end and to be inserted in said opening at an angle with said blade, and means for attaching saidhandle to said pick blade and said end of the handle in abutment to the head.

3. A combination tool having a head pro vided with an opening and a blade, a handle having one end formed 'to fit in said opening with the handle at an anglewith said blade, said handle being adapted to fit against said blade in another position and said end of the handle being shaped to abut the head, said head and handle having interengageable portions to lock them together in abutment when the handle and blade are fitted together, and means for clamping said handle and blade together.

4:. A combination tool comprising ahead having a socket and a blade, a'handle'to fit against said blade in one position and having one terminal shaped to 'fit in said socket in another position, said terminal being shaped to abut and fit. said socket whenthe handle is fitted against said blade, saidterminal of'the handle and socket having portions to interengage and lockthem together fittedtogether, and; a clamp for the handle engageable with. the blade t clamp in abutment when the handle andblade are gether, and to also fit against the socket when the handle is fitted therein.

5. A combination tool comprising a head having a socket with an opening therethrough, and a pick blade, a handle having one terminal shaped to fit in said opening, said handle being arranged to fit said blade, and said terminal of the handle being shaped to abut against said socket, the

socket having an aperture at one side, and said terminal of the handle having-a hook to engage through said aperture when the handle and blade are swung together, and a clamp to fit on the handle and engage said blade for clamping them together, and to also fit against said socket to hold the handle in said opening.
