IMPROVEMENT |N`cHuRNs.
Specification-forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,801, dated-May 2, 1876 application led December 13, 1875. s
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that we, WALTER S. MGMANUS and ROBERT S. MERRY-MAN, both of Brunswick, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghurns; and we do heresite upward and downward movements to the dasher of an ordinary churn.
In the accompanying drawings, a shows the churn set upon the base b. c is a standard, erected at the opposite end of the base b from that upon which a rests. Pivoted at the upper end of this vstandard is the hand -lever d, and--pivoted near the bottom of this standard,
as illustrated, is the bifurcated leverv e, said bifurcations conforming to the shape of the churn a, and extending about one-half way round,` the same, as illustrated in the drawing. f is a rod connecting the inner end of the hand-lever d with the bifurcated lever e, as shown. g is a cross-head, attached to the flasher-rod h. This cross-head is somewhatl longer than the diameter ofthe churn, and
is connected at each end with-the ends of the bifurcated lever by the links or rods i.
The several parts being thus arranged, it is evident that as the hand-lever is moved upywill be imparted through the medium of the rod f, forked lever e, cross-head g, and links i, hereinbefore described.
The rod f is made adjustable upon the forked lever e by means of holes and bolts, or other equivalent contrivance, so that a longer or shorter stroke may be imparted to the dasher-rod h, as desired. j shows the cover of thechurn, and has attached upon its under side the guide lo, through which the dasher-rod passes. This, being made to closely fit the dasher-rod, serves also to prevent the outiow, through the aperture in the cover, of any of the cream that might otherwise adhere to the flasher-rod. y
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a device for churning, of standard c, hand-lever d, connecting-rod f, bifurcated lever e,.constructed as shown, link i, cross-head g, dash-rod le., and cover j, having a suitable guide on its under side, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix oursignatures in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER S. MCMANUS. ROBERT S. MERRYMAN.
