l Application ledFebruaify 23, 1926." Serial No. 80,029.
This invention relates `to a golf bag or similar container. As is` now well known, golf bags in which the various golf clubs are carried, are used in large numbers.
These bags are often trailed along 'the ground and are frequentlylsubjected to all kinds of weather. j It is necessary, therefore, tohave a strong and durable structure 4for the bag, especially' at the bottom portion thereo j i It is also desirable to have'a neat and ornamental bag structure and one vwhich will retain its proper shape. It is also desirable to have the bottom structure of the bag so arranged that the same can be inspected asto quality. 1
It is-an object of this invention, therefore, to provide a simple, efficient, strong and durable structure for the botto'm'of the golf bag or similar container. h
It is a further object of the invention to provide a golf bag having a bottom member thereon and a metallic member recessed at its centralportion to engage*A and be secured 2.5 to said bottom member and having a rim portion fitting over the outer side of the bag.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a golf bag preferably of leather and having a heavy leather bottom member therein adjacent its bottom edge, together l with a metallic memberrecessed at its central portion to engage and be secured to said bottom member and to fit around the outer an opening therein whereby the quality of the bottom member can be inspected. j
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to similar v parts throughout the several views and in which Fig. l is a view in front elevation bottom portion of a golf bag;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section taken on line 3*-3 of Fig. 2. j
Referring to the drawings, a portion of a of the edge of the bag, said metallic member having golfbag is shown, comprising the usual longitudinally extending portion 5, illustrated as of cylindrical shape. `While the portion 5 may be madey of various flexible or .fabric material, the same preferably is made of leather and the portion 5 is formed by ,a piece of the leather being rolled into cylindrical shape and provided with a seam 5a extending longitudinally thereof. The portions adjacent the seam may be connected by any suitable fastening means, such as a seam thread orfrivets. The portion 5 has closely V fitted therein adjacent its bottom a comparatively thin cylindrical member 6.' vVVhil'e this member `may be made of various materials, it preferably is made of hard ber, The members '5 Yan'd are connected bya plurality of rows Gtofstitching. A lbottom member 7 is providedldisposed a shortdis-v tance from' the'. bottom edge V,ofthe portion 5, which bottom member hasanoutw'ardly turned liange AFat .its outer edge fitting within the memberand having its bottom edgesubstantially flush with the bottom edge `of the portion 5. The member` 7 is made of heavy sole leather. j The -liange 7 preferably is securely connectedto the members 5 and 6 by one or more seams 6b. An'inner bottom member Salso is preferably used, which is of flat circular form closelyy fitting the vinside of the member 6 and member 8 is surlmounted by another flat circularfdiskg of similar diamete'nwhich member v9 prefer ably is madej of 'hard` fiber. AV metallic memberlO is provided, having a flat central portion '10a disposedy Hat against the outer side of the bottom member 7, theportion l0 preferably having a central lcircular outwardly pressed rib'lOb from which radiate the spaced 'outwardlypressed ribs 10, said ribs thus re-inforcing the member 10. At Vits outer portion the member 10 has a rim 10d` fitting within the inner side of the flange 7 n and an outer rim l0e closely fitting about the outer side of portion 5 of the bag and eX- tending ashort distance upwardly yon said side. by the bottomportion l0fextending over the bottom edgesfofportion 5 and flange 7a.
The 'memberilO is connected to the members The rimsvl()d and l()e are connected.
7, 8 and 9 by a central rivet 11 which preferably will be made with rather large and ornamental heads, and the circumferentially spaced rivets 12. The member 10 has an npwardly extending tab l()g at one side, as shown in Fig.v l, disposed centrally over the seam which tab preferably is riveted to the portion at each sideofsaid seam 5?. The member is shown as having its portion l()IL provided with a plurality of openings l0h between the ribs 10Q, saidlopenings being illustrated as of annular sector shape.
In operation the metal piece l0`protects the bottom portion of the bag and retains the same in its proper shape. At the same time, a very neat: finished andornamental appearance is given to thebag, as the mem- -ber l0 is preferably plated and highly rp olished. The member 10 having thev re-inforcing ribs thereon, is noteasily bent-.outof shape. rlhe openings l()h afford an opportunity for the customer or dealer purchasing the bags to carefully inspect the quality of the material-in the bottom offfthe-bag. yAsl stated, this materialiinapplicants bag preferably is niadeyof heavy sole leather land this fact can be readily demonstrated .by an examination of'k the material Ythrough 'the openings 10h. Itwill alsofbeseen that the t .member l0 holds `thecentral bottom portion offthe bag off of :the supporting-surface and the only portion ofthe device contacting the supporting surface. is `the,v metal bou-nd vp0r- .tion at its-:oiiter edges. Aynovel, neat and :1, efiicientstructureY is thus provided.A
From the above description itis seenthat applicant has provided asimple and eflicient structure for a bag, and v oneffhavinggreat utility for the purpose. intended. The parts of the bag are fowand easily`v1nadeand assembled. The devices has 4been amply demonstrated in actual practice` and found Ato be Y.very successful and :efficient It will, ofcourse, be Lmderstoodthatvarious changes may be made: inf-.the form,.details, proportions and arrangement of the parts, without departingf-rom the scope of applicants inventiomwhich, generally stated, consists in a device 4capable'of ca-rrying out lthe objects abovesetforth, in fthe novel parts vand combinationsofl parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
VVhatis claimed is: 1. A golf bag comprising a tubular por- 'tion zof flexible non-metallic material, a bottom member disposed in said tubular portion and having a downturned; annular flange fitting said portion and having vits edge substantially flush with the bottom edge of said tubular portion, a sheet metal plate having an annular trough at its vouter side embracing said fiange and-the bottom of'said tubular portion and engaging the bottom of'said .bottom member, a thin itnb'ular lining inember fitting the innerside of said tubular portion adjacent the bottom thereof, an inner bottom member disposed on said first mentioned bottom member, a fiber plate disposed on said inner bottom member, said plate and inner bottom member fitting said lining member, and means connecting said metallic plate, bottom ,members and ,fiber plate.
2. Ajgolf bagcomprising a tubular portion of flexible non-metallic material forming the body of the bag, a bottom member disposed 1in sa-id'tubular portion and having outer-side embracing sa-id Vflange and the bottoni of said {tabula-r :portionand engaging the bottom of said bottom member, a---plnrality-.of ci-i-'cunife-rentially arranged fastenmea-ns :extendingv through f, said bottom member, bottom and sheetmetalplate, said sheet metal .plate lhav-ing; an .integral `extension projectingaipward along one side'of said tubular portion and a pair ofi-spaced fastening members extending through said extension, .said ltubular portion yand said lining member, said ftubula-r portion being longitudinally dividedand said lastimentioned fasteners `being disposedk ataeither. side of said division.
