IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,73 1, dated May 2, 1876; application filed December 28, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. ALLASON, of Dundee, county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stave-Packages, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.

The object of my invention consists in makin g a stave-package Whose head can be tightly and securely clasped in the package and held therein, and also readily removed without taking it apart.

My invention consists in the fastening with which I tighten and loosen the upper hoop of the package, and also in the construction of the staves with notches to receive the beveled edge of the head in which it is held by the clasp-hoop.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. represents a side elevation of a stave-package, showing the top hoop firmly clasped. 'Fig. 2 represents a top view of the same, showing the top hoop loosened. Fig. 3 shows top view of'a section of the package with the top hoop tightened; and Fig. 4. shows a vertical central section of the top of the package with the top hoop loosened and the staves slightly spread, so as to admit of the head being removed.

A represents any ordinary package made of staves. B represents the top hoop, which I f ordinarily make of metal. This hoop is secured by a cam-clasp, which-I ordinarily make of malleable iron. The piece 0 is secured to one end of the hoop, and has recesses D to make bearings for the trunnions E of the camshaped piece or lever F, which is attached to the other end of the hoop B, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. It will be readily seen that, by throwing the cam-lever F in the position shown in Fig. 2, the top hoop A is loosened so as to admit of the staves spreading slightly apart at their top, but, by throwing the camlever F down into the position shown in Figs.

1 and 3, the hoop is tightened securely about the package. The recesses D are partially closed about the trunnions E after they are inserted therein, so that the parts are held together in all ordinary uses of the package. G is the head of the package, the edge of which is beveled, so that it has its greatest I the staves allowed to spread, the edge of the head G can be raised from the beveled notch and removed from the package. K is a cleat, screwed to the top of the head G, and is provided with recesses L at its ends, by which a hold may be obtained to remove the head from the package. By taking hold of the head in one of the recesses L one side of the head can be readily raised out of a package.

I am enabled by my invention to use the same package continuously for transporting butter or other articles that are required to be packed tightly for transportation, as the article shipped can be removed from the package without injuring or defacing it.

I claim- 1. The stave-package A, hoop B, provided with a cam-clasp, U and F, for tightening and loosening the same, as and for the purposes specified.
