Description

UNITED STATEs PATENT EETGE. A
VYESLEY W. WILCOX, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
|MPRovEMENT IN ENeRAvERS vlsEs.
Specification forming part yof l Letters Patent No. 176,722, dated April 25, 1876; application iled i January 2a, 1875.
To all whom it mag/,concern v Be it known that I, WESLEY W.WILcoX, ot' the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State ot' Illinois, have inventedV a new and Improved Engravers Vise, of which the fol lowing is a specification:
The object of my invent-ion is to form a `cheap and substantial parallel vise, having stationary and adjustable jaws, so arranged that a piece ot' coin, a ring, a thimble, or any similar article can be clasped in the vise for the purpose of engraving.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention with the adjustable jaws removed. Fig. 2 is a, side-elevation of a portion of my invention with the adjustable jaws attached, and having a portion ot' the casing C cut away in order to show the .connection of the screw S with the bar'A, by means of which the jaw P is operated. Fig. is a front view of one of the ladjustable jaws, and Fight represents a top view of one ot' the adjustable jaws. i
In Fig. 1, B is the base ot' the vise.V C is a box or casing, which is rigidly attached to the 4base B, and forms part ot' the foot of the `post P. A- is a bar, which slides back and Vforth in the box C. It is rigidly attached to the foot ot' post P', and is provided with a female screw, in which Works the screw S, the same being provided with the milled head S', by
turning which the post P' can be brought in l contact with the post P or-removed some distance from'it. T T are the fixed jaws ot' the vise. At the point where they c ome in con tact with each other they are grooved in the form either of an arc of a circle or a V, so as to-tirmly clasp a ring or any article of similar form. Beneath the jaws T T are the recesses In holding a ring or thimble the shoulders I I also act as jaws of the vise. `In engraving a shirt-stud, or any article having a standard, the standard is clasped by the up-- per jaws T T. Theupper part of the stud is above the jaws, and the lower part projects intothe recesses i t'.
O O. represent the adjustable jaws. Each' jaw consists of' a piece of. metal of a semicircular or any desired form, and is provided with a loop, which slides over the jaw T, thesame being so constructed as to `tit closely and be held `firmly,as shown at m Each jaw is provided with a series ot' steps -or notches, so as' to receive a large or a' small coin with but a slight movement of the movable jaw P', and also so as to enable the operator to engrave articles ot' a great variety of sizes with a single vise. l
Instead of using the steps or notches, as shown in thedrawings and described above, the adjustable jaws O Amay be constructed with a smooth upper surface, and may be provided with headless screws, so as to be screwed tion' with the bar A, socket C, screw S, and
base B, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the posts P P', the
adjustable jaws C O, having the loops a0 x, and constructed with steps'or notches, substanv tially as described.
WESLEY W. WLUOX.
