Description

G. w. oseoon.
BLOCK-LOCKS FOR LAS'IS. No.176.673 Patented April 25, 187 6.
I. I I f Z 6 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE,
GEORGE W. OSGOOD, OF WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO ELlPHAZ W, ARNOLD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLOCK-LOCKS FOR LASTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,673, dated April 25, 1876 application filed February 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. OSGOOD, of Weymouth, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and usefullmprovement in Block Locks for Lasts, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, iorm'ing a part of this specification, in which- Fig'nre 1 is a plan or top view of the last, and Fig. 2 a plan or bottom view' of the block.
Like letters of referenceindicate correspondin g parts in the different figures of the draw in g.
My invention relates to that class of block locks which are automatic in their action ;and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more etfective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of myinvention will be readily obvious to all conversant with such matters from the following description.
Inthe drawing, A represents the body of the last, and B a common wood-screw inserted near the ankle portion, and left with its head slightly projecting above the seat of the block. The block D is mortised or grooved longitudinally on its under surface, as shown at F, and in this groove there is secured, by the screw G, the bifurcatedspring H, having its free ends bent or curved outwardly near the center, as shown.
In the use of my invention the block is placed on the last in such aposition that the head of the screw B will enter that end of the groove F which is opposite the screw G. The block is then forced toward the toe of the last, causing the screw B to pass between the free ends of the spring H,,and to be grasped thereby, in a manner which will be readily obvious to all conversant with such matters from the foregoing description.
The toe of the block is secured by the ordi nary brad or pin 0, and it will be obvious that the groove F may be formed in the body of the last and the screw B inserted in the block, if preferred, without departing from the spirit of my invention; which having thus explained,
What I claim is- In a last-block fastening, the bifurcated spring H, sunk flush with the bottom of'block D in the recess F, and arranged to clamp laterally under the head of screw B, which projects into said recess when the block is placed upon the last.
- GEORGE W. OSGOOD.
