I H. E. FLYNN BUNDLE ADJUSTER 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed May 2. 1928 Inventor Envy 121 92211:
Patented June 24, 1939 @FFEQ HENRY 351. FL'TZHKIF, G31 APACHE, OKELILXZOLJA BUNDLE ADJUSTER Application filed May 2, 1928.
The present invention relates to a bundle adjuster for grain binders and the object and advantages thereof will appear as the description proceeds taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a transverse vertical section through the deck of a conventional binder taken substantially on the line ll of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows,
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrow,
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved spring finger,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the spring finger rail extension,
Figure 6 is a perspective view ofthe deck head attachment,
Figure 7 is an enlarged detail section taken substantially on the line 77 of Figure 2,
Figure 8 is an enlarged detail section taken substantially on the line 8-8 of Figure 2, and
Figure 9 is a perspective view of one of the plates for holding the extension on the spring finger rails.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that numeral 5 denotes the inclined deck of a conventional grain binder which has mounted thereon the usual deck head 6 which has its upper edge inclined more pronouncedly than the deck in the usual well known manner.
The numeral 7 denotes the ordinary binder spring rail which is of I beam construction and has the usual springs 8 thereon. I provide an extension 9 also of E beam formation shown to advantage in Figure 5 having a series of openings 10 at one end and a pair of openings 11 at the other end. Plates 12 are mounted in the channels of the rail 7 and the extension 9 and are bolted thereto as is indicated at 1st and 15.
A specially constructed spring linger is engaged on the end of the extension 9. This spring linger includes a bowed portion 16 one end of which terminates in an oliset manner as at 17 and the other end terminates Serial No. $24,607.
in a coil 18 having a rectangular loop end 19 for registering with one of the apertures 10, the extension 9 projecting through the, coil 18.
A bolt 20 engages through the loop end 19 and the respective openings 10 to hold the finger in place.
A deck head attachment is in the form of an elongated plate bolted alongside of the head 6 and having its upper edge inclined upwardly in an opposite direction to the up per edge of the deck head so that a shoulder 26 is formed extending above the lower portion of the deck head 6.
The rain spring finger 16 with. the assistance of the raised shoulder 26 on the outer end of the deck head attachment holds the heavy grain while being cut and tied so as to be straight in the machine thereby causing the bundle to come out of the machine straight and to tie the bundle tight with the butts of the stalks even. lVithout these improvements the bundles usually come out of the machine head first causing the butts to be uneven and the string to be tied crooked about the bundle.
It is thought that the construction, operation and utility of the invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to with out departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
l. The combination with a deck, deck head and binder spring rail of a grain binder, of an extension to the rail directed toward the deck head, a spring finger on the extension, said spring finger including a bowed body portion terminating at one end in a coil disposed about the extension and having a looped terminal, a bolt extending through the extension and loop terminal to hold the finger in place, an elongated plate bolted to said deck head, and extending along one side thereof, the upper edge of said plate being inclined upwardly in a direction opposite to the upper edge of" the said deck head to provide a shoulder extend ing above the lower portion of the deck head. 2. The combination with a deck, deck r head and binder spring rail of a grain bind er, of an extension to the rail directed toward the deck head, a series of spaced openings formed on the free end of said extension, a spring finger on the extension, said spring finger including a bowed body portion terminatin at one end in :1 eoil disposed about t e extension for slidably mountin the same upon the extension and provide with a loop terminal adapted for registry with one of the said spaced openings on the extension, a bolt extending through the loop and aligned opening to hold the finger in place, and an attachmentto the deck head forming a shoulder ex- 2n tending above the outer end of said deck head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HENRY E. FLYNN.
