The invention relates to carlines and consists in the novel constructionby which the metal of the blank is advantageously used, particularly to obtaina strong connection withthe plates of the car frame. The invention also comprisesa construction of clip -wh-ich is used in combination with the car:

In general cross-section my improved carline is a Z-bar having a vertically extending web portion A, a laterally extending bottom B and the oppositely laterally extending top flange C. The flange B is of uniform width and extendshorizontally from end to end of the carline or between the side plates D of the car frame. The web portion A is of greatest width at the center of the car and tapered towards the side at an angle corresponding to the pitch of the roof. The top flange C is widest at the opposite end of the carline or adjacent to the side plates of the car frame and tapers towards the center. Thus the structure is one, whichcan be formed from a rectangular sheet-metal blank, the side edges of which are originally parallel. 7
To use advantageously all of the metal of the original blank, thewide end portions of the top flange C are utilized for attachment to clips which secure the carline to the side plates. These clips comprise the outer and inner clip members E. and F, which are angle-shaped and are of a width corresponding to the combined width of the top and bottom flanges of the carline. Each clip has a vertical portion, such portion G of the clip E extending downward outside of the plate D and a corresponding portion H of the clipv F extending downward on the inner face of 5 the plate D. The original shapeof the blank is rectangular and the extra metal in the flange M, dueto' its being struck out from a lower plane, is utilized to underlap the flange'B a greater distance and' to placethe rivet hole a' greater distance from the vertical flange; This also facilitates the assembly of the structure as the rivet? hole N in the flange M will clear the flange J of the clip E, said flange having a bevelled corner as shown.
The web A of the carline from its end adjacent to the side plate to a point adjacent to the first purlin is of uniform height and this, by reason of the pitch in the roof, will providea spacing between the top flange and the roof-boards O suthcient for receiving the purlins P. The top flange G has parallel side edges for this portion of the carline and also has parallel sides at the center where the ridge pole is support-ed upon the carline. Between these parallel portions the top flange is tapered as shown. Thus, every bit of the metal of the original blanks both for the carline proper and the two clips is utilized in increasing the strength and rigidity v of the structure.
What I claim as' my invention is:
, 1. A carline comprising a Z-bar developed from a sheet-metal blank of uniform width to have a web portion and a flange portion reversely tapered between the ridge and the side plates, and a clip for securing said carline to the side plate of a width equal to the portions at difto form a bottom flange of uniform width tween'the ridge and bottom flanges extending from side plate to side plate of the car frame, a web portion tapering bethe side plates, and a top flange which reversely tapers between the side plates and ridge, and a clip for securing said carline to the side plate having a width equal 'to the combined width of the top and thereof and having laterally extending portions in planes corresponding to said top andbottom flanges and riveted thereto.

A carline'comprising a Z-bar developed from a blank of'nnilorm width to form a bottom flange oi uniform width extending horizontally between side and side plate of a car'frame, a web portion which tapers be tween the ridge and side plate and a top flange which reversely tapers from the side plate to'the ridge, a pair of clips for embracing the side plate, said clips being a width corresponding to the combined Width of the top and bottom flanges the end oi the carline and respectively provided with portiens overlapping and underlapping said flanges and secured thereto, said clips also having vertical portions respectively adjacent to theouter and'inner faces of the side plate with apertures therein registering with each other and with apertures in the side plate for the passage of clamping bolts.
5. A carline comprising a Z-bar having a bottom flange of uniform width, a'web portion tapering between the ridge and the side plate and a top flange reversely tapering between the side plate and ridge, clips for embracing'the side plate having inwardly extending portions respectively overlapping and underlapping the flanges of the carline, said clips being of a Width equal to the combined width of said top and bottom flanges of the carline and the inner clip having laterally extending portions in planes adjacent to both top and bottom flanges of the carline, the latter portion underlying the carline flange to a greater extent and secured thereto at a point clearing the flange ofthe other clip.
