positions in the table for permitting the de-' 16 vice to handle various kindsof work.
A further object of my invention is to pro vide a device of the type described, in which the clamping members are constructed for preventing the vertical movement of the clamping members with respect to the table top when the clamping members are brought into contact with the work. i I
A further object ofmy invention is to provide a device of the type described which is extremely simple in construction'and which is a great time saver to the operator inaiding him to quickly assemble his work; I f
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, andthe novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. 7
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in Which,- Y Y Figure 1 is a top plan view of 'the device,
Figure 2 is a section along the line 22 of Figure 1, V
Figure 3 is a section along the line 33 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4: is a device.
In carrying out my work table consisting of a top 1 hav ng grooves 2 therein and a head piece clamping member 3. In actual practice, the table will front view of aportion of the be about four'feet long, and the three grooves 2 will be disposed in the table top, one'in the center thereof-and the other two at'the' ends thereof. o v
I have shown-in'Figure 1 that the table is provided with three clamping devices. These devices are so constructed as] to be changeable from one igroove to another groove, and althoughI have shown three of the devices, two of said devices would answer invention, I provide a thepurposeforf most of the work concerned,
one ofthe device's beingpla'ced'in the "center groove while the other device is placed in either of'the end grooves. If only two of the devices were'used, and it; was nec'essaryto I clamp worktogether-that extended the entire length ofthe; table, the center device could be r'emoved'by, a means hereinafter described and bedisposed in the empty end groove.- In
this way, the} cost'of thetablecould bere duced since two clamping devices would answer the purpose.
Since all three of the devices 'are identical in construction with respect to each other,-a description of one of them willbe sufficient'for' all *three. "-U-shape'd members d see Figure 2) are slidably. disposed in thegrooves '2, and these members have flanges 5 which extend into cutaway recesses 6. The members 1 have openings in the bottom thereof for permitting a clamping member 8 to b'e'- adj ustably' secured: to I theimember r by a means'now' to be described.
2 A' casti ng 9 of the shape'shown' 1n justabily secured thereto: by means of abolt v I Figure y 7 1s seated'in the U-shaped memberwand isad' 10 which "has'anenlarged portion 11 adapted I to extend into the opening 7 Theaportiono ill has-notches 12 out thereinisee Figure 3)- to prevent the member 9 :from being forced upwardly with respect to "the-imembeD-l when vpressuregis brought to bear l upon the membera8.xw Y .1 a I 1 The bolts 10also isecurethenclamping member 8 to 1 the member 9, I and it i will be further noted from Figures 1 and-3 that the byithe member-99 For-ease in moving the members 8 and 5 9 from place to place, I secure-a handle 14 to the member 8 by means of the'bolt '10 and a screwlij. 1 v
The means for moving the clamping members 8- and the member comprises screws 16 receive a plate 22 therebetween. A. crank 23 is mounted upon the outer end of each of'the 7 '9 to the table by meansof bolts 25. 'Retaining' members 26 are carried by the plates 24: and
. are adapted to be swung over the face of the p e I plate '22, thus locking the platein, position.
screws 16, and it will be seen that Whenthe crank is rotated, it will move the members 4 together withthe clamping members 8 to- Ward orea Way fromthe head pieee 3.
The means. for permitting the removal of one of the members 4 from one of the grooves 5 and disposing it in another of the grooves is clearly shown in Figure 4;. Itwill; here be I seen that the plate 22 is disposed between plate's24, the latter, in turn, being secured The-bolts 25am countersunk for permitting the lprojectioris 27 to bei swung from the locked positionshownrin Figure 4 into runlocked position, whereby the plate 22 Imay removedf If necessary, stop pins28 may be disposed upohlthe'plate 22 for holding the projection 27 in the-position shown.
, From the foregoing description of the various partsof the .device, ;the operation thereof may bereadily understood. As heretofore stated, the-table 1 may beused as a Work bench; and when the parts have been assembled,-theymay be clamped together and then a corrugated binding memberis driven into i the parts to hold the same together. Ifonly two ofthe clamping devices are used-onthe table, and the operator wish-es to dispose one ofthefdevices' at the end of the tableso as to have'both ofthe devices at the extreme ends.
of the table,,the center plate 22 is removedby means 'of throwing the projections 27 into inoperative. position, 'theb'loek19 is removed from themeinber' 4 and-their the member 4;
is moved to theright; when lookingv at Fig June 3. The memberis then inserted in the Y einpty :groove,";the ;%block is placed backiinto 'position, the fastening' memberg26is swung j into position,
and the devieeis ready" for use. Iclaimz'. 1
I A clamping device comprising a tablehave V member capable of reciprocal movement ing :guideW-ays in the top fthereof, v a. -'U -shaped Within the .guideways, a plurality of screwthreaded blocks secured Within the U-sh-aped member a removable :closure plate for the tent end of ,the gui deways; latches for se-, curing-the closure plate in position for close ing the endof the slot, a traveling "screw for 5 serewetihreaded engagement with the closure plate and Wifilhthe internallyscrew threadedyblocksQ. a
In testimony whereof-Iaflix my i JOHNVSEA.
