To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SVEN A. HOLMQUIST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Tacoma, county of Pierce, State of lVashin ton, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Cabinet- Makers Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cabinet makers clamps, and more particularly to improvements in clamps of that type disclosed in United States Patent No. 1,206,689, issued 'ointly to W. E. Youngquist and myself on ov. 28, 1916; the principal object of my improvements being to provide a clamp that may be more easily applied to the work, and which may serve to a better advantage and in a number of capacities that could not be accomplished by the clamp as previously constructed.
More specifically stated, it is the object of the present invention to provide a device of the above character, comprising a pair of clamping bars that, in one position, are disposed parallel to each other and between whlch boards, or the like, may be clamped with their edges held tightly together for gluing, and whereby the boards are retained horizontally in line and buckling prevented when the clamping pressure is applied.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamp of the above character wherein the said paired bars may be adjusted so that one forms an extension of the other and the clamping lugs may be adjusted along the same to receive a multiplicity of boards.
The clamp herein disclosed is capable of a wide range of use, but is especially useful in cabinet making for clamping panels and the like in shape. It is of such a nature that it will hold two, or a multiplicity of boards, in true alinement, while at the same time it will press the edges thereof in tight engagement.
In accomplishing the objects of the invention, I have provided the improved details of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved clamp in use, showing in dotted lines the upper clamping bar in open position.
Fig. 2 is a top View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the clamp, illustrating the disposition of the upper clamping bar when it is not in use.

Referring more in detail to the several views of the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate the same or like parts,
1 and 2 respectively, designate what I will term the lower and upper clamping bars. These bars, when in the most common use to which they are put, are disposed parallel to each other in the same vertical plane. They are of substantially the same length and along their outer edges are provided respectively with notches 3 and 4; the notches of the bar 2 opening straight from the edge while those of the bar 1 are more of the ratchet type and open at an incline to the edge of the bar.
At one end the bar 1 has a thrust head 5 fixed rigidly'thereon, and threaded through this head to extend along the upper edge of the bar 1 and parallel therewith, is a clamping screw 6 provided, at its outer end'with a crank 7 whereby the screw may be rotated, and at its inner end the screw is rotatably fixed to a clamping head 8 that incloses and is slidable along the bar 1. A clamping head 10 is also mounted for adjustment along the bar 1 in opposed relation to the head 8, and this has a U-shaped anchorin link 11, of bail like form secured thereto by means of a bolt 12 extending through the head, with its free, closed end movable into such position that it may engage within the notches of the upper or lower bar, depending upon the way in which the device is being used at the particular time, to retain it at an adjusted position.
The bar 2 is connected at its outer end to the corresponding end of the bar 1 by means of a pair of links 15-15, which are disposed on opposite sides of the bars and which are fixed pivotally to the bar 1 by means of a pin 16 and are attached to the bar 2 by means of a pin 17 which extends through the links and is slidable within an S-shaped slot 18 in the latter bar. The inner end of the bar 2, when the device is in use as shown in Fig. 1, is connected to the corresponding end of the bar 1 by means of a pair of spaced links 1919 which are pivotally fixed to the opposite sides of the head 5 and, at theirouter ends, have a bolt or pin 20 extending between the same which is removably seated within a notch 21 in the upper edge of the bar 2; The links 15-45. and 19-49 are of the same length and when connected to the bar 2'as above described are parallel so that, in this manner, the bars 1 and 2 are retained parallel with each other during a clamping operation. V
The clamping heads 8 and 10 have slots 23 in their upper portions within which the bar 2 may seat to be held in parallel alinement with the bar 1, and by unseating the connecting pin 20 of the links 19-19 from the notch 21 the bar 2 may be swung upwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to provide for an easy removal or placing ofboards within the clamp.
When it is desired that the device be used as an extension clamp, as is illustrated in Fig. 6, the bar 2 is swung outwardly until its outer end abuts against the outer end of the bar 1. The abutted ends are provided, one with a notch 26 and the other with a projection 27 adapted to seat within the notch to hold the ends of the bars in alinement. Before the bars are moved to this position it is necessary that the connecting pin of the'links 15l5 be shifted to the end of the S-shaped slot opposite that wherein it is shown in Fig. 1' so that the ends of the bars, when moved to this abutted position, will then be held firmly together. After the bars have been thus arranged, the head 10 is shifted outwardly on the bar 1 and onto the bar 2, which is the same size as the bar 1, and when in a desired position of adjustment it is locked by seatingthe link 11 in one of the notches 4 in the bar 2. To permit this movement of the head over the links 15-15, the head is provided on each side of the slot through which the bar moves with channels 30, as is shown in Fig. 4, through which the links may pass as the head is shifted outwardly.
To use the device when the extension is not needed, theheads 8 and 10 are adjusted as is shown in Fig. 1, the bar 2 is raised so that the boards may be placed between the clamping heads and it is then lowered against the same and secured by the links l9--19'. The-closed end of the link 11 is then seated within a notch 4: of the bar 1 to lock the head 10 from sliding on the bar 1. when clamping pressure is applied.
Obviously, when clamping pressure is applied by turning the screw 6, the clamping heads Sand lOwill be forced against the edges of the boards, while the bars 1 and 2 will be pulled laterally against the sides of the boards to hold them in horizontal alinement; this being' effected through the co'nnection of the head 10 with the bar 2.
If it is not desired that the bar 2 be used, it may be swung beneath the bar 1 as is illustrated in'Fig. 3, and in this position will be out of the way.
The clamp thus described has been found to be very eflicient in the work for which it is intended. It can be very easily applied or removed from the work and is universally adjustable to work of diiferent thicknesses and widths.
I claim- 1. A clamp of the character described comprising cooperating, upper and lower clamping bars having notched outer edges; the lower of said bars having a thrust head fixed at one endthereof, a clamping head slidable on the bar adjacent the thrust head, a clamping screw threaded through the thrust head and fixed to the clamping head,
links pivotally connecting the bars in rigid spaced relation at their outer ends, another set of links, parallel with the first set, mounted pivotally on the thrust-head and detach ably connected with the corresponding end of the upper bar to retain said bars in parallel relation, a second clamping head adjustable along the lower bar and an anchor link pivotally fixed to said clamping head engageable within notches of the upper bar whereby clamping pressure against the head effects clamping pressure to be exerted between the bars.
2. A clamp of the character described comprising a pair of cooperating clamping bars having notches in theedgesthereof, the first of said bars having a thrust head fixed at the inner end thereof, a clamping head slidable on the bar adjacentsaid thrust head, a clamping screw threaded through the thrust head and fixed in the clamping head; the second bar being connected at one end with the outer end of the first bar by paired links whereby it may be held in spaced relation when used parallel with the first bar, or in end abutment therewith as an extension of the first bar, paired anchor links mounted pivotally on the thrusthead, parallel with the first named links, adapted to be detachably connected with the correspond-' ing end of the second bar to retain the bars functionally in parallel relation, a second clamping head slidable along the first bar and adapted to be moved onto and along the second bar when said bars are in end abuti ment and an anchor link pivotally fixed to the second thrust head adapted to be seated inthe notches of the second bar when said bars are used in parallel or in extended arrangement.
3. A clamp of the character described comprising in combination, upper and lower clamping bars having notches along the outer edges thereof; said upper bar having a detent in its upper edge near the inner end thereof and having a slot in its outer end provided with end seats facing in opposite.
directions and at different distances from the end of the bar, a thrust head fixed on the inner end of the lower bar, a clamping head slidable on the bar adjacent said thrust head, a clamping screw connecting the thrust and clamping heads, anchor links mounted pivotally on opposite sides of the thrust head having a connecting pin between their outer ends removably seated in said bar detent, a pair of anchor links pivotally fixed to opposite sides of the lower bar at its outer end having a pin extending between their outer ends and slidable within said bar slot whereby said upper bar may be anchored in parallel relation to the lower bar when said pin is seated at one end of said slot and may be held rigidly in end abutment therewith as an extension when said pin is seated in the 0pposite end of said slot, a second clamping 20 head slidable along the first bar and adapt ed to be moved onto and along the second bar when said bars are in end abutment, and an anchor bail fixed to said head adapted to be seated in said bar notches when said bars are used in parallel or extended relation.
4. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said clamping heads have alined slots across their upper portions for receiving the up er clamping bar therein to retain it in para lel 30 relation to the lower bar.
