F. WERTHMANN CRDSSING GOMPOSED OF JIGNOLES RAILS June 24,- 1930,

Witness 2m W Patented June 24, 1930 UNITED STATES OFFICE FRITZ WERTHMANN, OF DU IS BURG- RUHRORT GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM 'VEBEINIGTE STAHLWERK E AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, OE DUSSELDORF, 'G-ERMANY CROSSING COMPOSED OF VIGNOLES RAILS Application filed. September 27, 1929,8eria1-N0. 395,624, and in Germany October 19, 1928.
Whereas it has become known in grooved] rail-crossings to make these crossings wear proof by insertion of double-cheek groove wedges or other insert pieces made of spe- 5 cial steel, Vignoles rail crossings have been made hitherto merely'of rails of normal quality.
This invention has for its object to make such crossings, composed of Vignoles rails of normal quality, wear proof by suitable means at thosepoints which are specially submitted to'wear, and to thereby consider' ably lengthen the durabilityof such Vignoles rails crossings.
obtained by fitting in a crossing, in which the crossing point is formed, on the one side by two joining rails, Whereas the rails,'lying on the other side, arebent and extend on the side of the crossing point formed by the joining rails, the inner side of the headsof the bent rails with an insert o fwear proof material, for instance manganese steel, and by providingon the crossing point formed by $3 the joining rails a cap of wear proof material gripping over boththese rails.-
The wear proof pieces inserted into the bent rails may be preferably arranged so that they undercut the rail heads on the outer to side of the crossing and so that the inner edges of the bottom faces of the same are welded together with the rails on the'inner side on which they form the head of the rail. By this undercutting of the insert'piec'e in the rail head on the side turned away from the wheel flange it becomes possible,'to fix the insert pieceswith only onesingle welding seam which, owing to its low position, is never touched by the wheel flanges.
The cap of wear proof material gripping over the joining rails may also be connected at its lower edges with the rails by welding.
By the connection of these wear proof insert pieces in crossings composed ofVignoles rails the durability, and thereby the security of service of such crossings, are considerably lncreased as all parts specially submitted to strong wear are made of wear-proof material.
5 Anembodiment of the invention is illus- According to the'invention this object is trated by way of example the accompanylng Fig. Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. The crossing point is formed -on the one drawing.

side bythe joining rails a and b, on which a cap 0 made of wear-proof materialis placed over ,a suitable length after proper fashioning of the rail heads. The other side of the.
crossingis formed by the bent rails d and e which, in the range of the crossing proper, have wear-proof lnserts f and g undercut-.
ting the rail heads on the outer side.-
The capv c as well as the inserts f and 9 have horizontal or almost horizontal bottom surfaces 1n order to ensure a secure restmg and uniform pressure transmlssion. The
welding seams for the fiXati on of the inserts or of the cap on the rails are designated by h.
The cap 0 may also be'secured by rolling to the rails a and b. i
A crossing composed of Vignoles rails the crossing point of which is formed on the one side by joining rails, the two rails on the other side'being bent off and extending side by side with the rails forming the crossing point, comprising a cap of wear-proof material like manganese steel of F'i-shaped section covering both joining rails of the crossing point, the lower edges of said cap being fixed on the rails by welding; and an insert of wear-proof material. provided on the inner side of the head of each bent rail, said inserts undercutting the rail heads on the outer side, the inner edge of their'flat bottom face being welded on the said rails:
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set
