Description

A. B. CROWELL.
CHILDS COMMODE. N0.176,517. Patented AprilZS, 1876.
N-PETERS. PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON B Q UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ALLEN B. OROWELL, OF WEST DENNIS, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDRENS COMMODES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,5 l7, dated April 25, 1876; application filed November 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN B. ORoWELL, of West Dennis, Barnstable county, Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Ohilds Gommode, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved childs commode, showing cover in position as tray. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section on the line 0 c, Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a top view of the same, with part cut off to show interior.
Similar letters'of reference indicate corresponding part-s.
My invention relates to an improved childs commode that combines the advantages of a chair, Walking -stool, and commode in a very neat and compact manner; and the invention consists in the arrangement of a chair within a case, with front and rear doors, closed by a cover that is used as a tray when attached to the front part of the commode. Closets at the sides serve for storing the playthings, while a cross-bar at the rear, with extensionguards of the side walls, allow the use of the commode as a walking-stool.
In the drawing, A represents the main part or case of the commode, which is closed by a cover, B, placed on the top. A seat, 0, with back, is arranged at the inside of the c0nlmode, a chamber or space beneath the seat being used for the vessel, which is introduced and taken out by a door, 0, at the rear. The chair may also be closed in front by a suitable door, so that when the cover is put 011 the commode is entirely closed. A front extension of the base serves as a foot-board for the child.
The commode is preferably placed on casters, to be moved from place to place.
The cover may be used as a tray by being applied, by staples a, to side hooks b of the and firm securing of the cover to the hooks by the less recessed parts that bind on the tray when the slides are entirely drawn out, as shown in Fig. 1. The cover serves, when supported on the slides, as a tray for the playthings of the child, and as a guard to prevent its falling out of the chair. The space at both sides of the chair is utilized to form closets E, in which the childs playthings and other articles may be placed to be out of the Way, hinged or sliding doors giving access to the same. Rear extensions F of the side walls of the commode support a lateral cross bar or rod, F, that is used by the child as a support or hold to climb up and walk, the extension-walls forming guards to prevent the tumbling over of the commode.
As the commode is placed on casters, the child can readily move the same, and use it as a walking-stool.
The whole device is of compact shape, and forms a useful article for the nursery.
A bell arrangement may be applied. to the front part of the commode, to be rung by the strikingof the childs heel against the front. The entire commode may also be provided with rockers, in such a manner as to allow of their being let down when desired, and securely fastened out of the waywhen not in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the cover of the commode, having staples or eyes, with books of the commode-and recessed supporting slidepieces, for arranging the cover as tray and guard, substantially as specified.
2. The commode provided with rear extensions of the side walls or guard-pieces, carrying a lateral rod to give support to the baby, and preventing the tumbling over the commode, substantially as specified.
ALLEN BANGS GROWELL.
