HAIR WAVER Application filed' June 27,
The present invention relates to hair wavers, and more, particularly to an improved construction of holder adapted for use in multiple for holding the hair in position while setting to form waves in the hair.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved hair waver, which is of simple and economical construction, which is easy'to handle and apply without the exercise ofskill, and a holder which is adaptable for use with the improved connecting clip disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 339285, filed February 11, 1929.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder of this character which comprises a base part which may be of relatively fiat one-piece construction suitably shaped for easy sliding engagement against the scalp and under a layer of hair, and a second part which is pivotally connected to the first part in such manner that the second part may be swung down into position over the first part of the layer'of hair without drawing or bunching the layer of hair, and which is provided with means for holding the layer of hair relatively flat and'intact during the adjusting of the holder. A rurther object of the invention is to provide a novel means for releasably connecting the two parts of the holder together without requiring any additional parts and h which interconnects the parts by a mere pressure of the parts toward each other in the natural movement of closing the holder. The invention also aims at the provision of a holder of this character which may be provided with crest forming flanges for the waves in the hair which are carried by the outer or movable part of the holder, and which are peculiarly arranged so as not to interfere with the attachment and adjust ment ofthe connecting clips which may be employed. The invention also provides a holder of this character which may be constructed of celluloid, sheet metal or the like, whereby the holders may be manufactured in large quantities, may be easily packaged on cards I 1929. Serial No. 374,141.
or the like, and which may be sold to the public at a relatively low cost.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully de scribed hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
In'the drawings, wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a plurality of the hair wavers or holders of this invention applied to a layer of hair.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary enlarged transverse section taken through a portion of the same.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one the hair wavers or curlers detached.
Figure 4 is a transverse section taken through the base member of the same substantially on the line 4-4: in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 3, but;i showing a modified form of the device, an e Figure 6 is a fragmentarysectional view taken through a modified'construction of the hair waver.
Referring now to the drawing, and first to Figure 3, the hair waver is shown in the form of a base member 10, which may be of any suitable material or construction, and which may be transversely curved throughout its length, as shown to advantage in Fig ure 4-,the curvature being in any desired direction, although shown in the present in stance as being concave at its upper side. The member 10 is relatively narrow and elongated and flattened sufficiently to engage beneath a layer of hair and is pointed as at 11 to facilitate the passage of thefree end of the b ase member 10 beneath the hair.
The inner or opposite end of the base member 10 may be rolled upwardly and provided with a pair ofspaced ears or flanges 12 between which engages the rear end of the outer member 13, the latter being connected between the ears 13 by a pivot 14 of any suitable construction; The outer member 13 may bein the form of a fiat. strip or blade disposed at right angles to the base member 10 and extending lengthwise thereof and adapted to be swung down into engagement with the outer face of the base member 10. The inner edge portion of the outer member 13 is provided with a plurality of inwardly extending teeth or projections 15 forming substantially a comb, the teeth being relatively shallow and adapted to engage in a layer of hair disposed over the base member 10. The outer end of the member 13 is provided with an enlarged projection 16 which registers with a slot 17 formed in the outer end portion of the base 10, and the'projection 1.6 is provided with a cam surface 18 for engaging the inner edge of the slot 17 to direct the projection 16 over said of the waver. I h
At the inner edge of the projection 16, and above the cam 18, is a flat shoulder 19 which is adapted toengage beneath the inner edge of the slot 17 for holding the outer member 13 in closed position by the resilient actionof the members 10 and 13.
The projection 16 is of sufficient length to project through the slot 17 ardistance sufficient to be engaged by the finger for forcing the projection 16 upwardly out of the slot 17. c
The blade or outer member 13 presents an upstanding edge portion which is adapted to receive one end ofthe clip 20, shown in Figures 1 and 2, and which is utilized in connecting together adjacent hair wavers when placed on the hair as shown in Figure 1. The clip 20, which is disclosed in the above referred to co-pending application may comprisea flat strip of metal whichis bent U-shape with'a relatively wide bridge portion, and which has its opposite ends rolled back and forth to provide spring clamps 21 which face inwardly and which are adapted to frictionally engage over the upstanding edge portions of the adjacent wavers. The clip 20'is thus slidable along the edge portions under abnormal pressure and admits of the relative adjustment of the wavers after they have been secured in the hair.
The outer member 13 may be provided at opposite sides with outwardly and upwardly curved crest forming fian'ges 22. The flanges 22 may be of greater height than inner edge during the closing the upper edge of the blade or member 13 and extend laterally therebeyond a distance sufficient to clamp the crests or waves of the hair between adjacent flanges 22 so as to hold the hair in sure. I
From Figure 2 it will be noted that the flanges 22 extend up into the clip 20, but that the latter is of suflicient depth to clear desired form under pres- Vthe flanges and the interposed crest of the layer of hair. 7 t a As shown in the modification Figure 6,
the base member 23'may be provided with a longitudinal cavity 24 intermediate the lateral edges of the base portion 23, which may be formed in any suitable manner, such as by a slot for the reception of the lower ends of the teeth 15 of the upper or outer member. p v
In the modification shown in Figure 5, the crest forming flanges 22 are omitted, but it is understood that wavers of this construction may be placed closely togetherwith the layer of hair crimped upwardly between hem and hold in the desired form.
As shown in Figure 1, the upper waver is positioned beneath a layer of the hair as shown at 25 and the waver is closed to clamp against the opposite sides of thelayer of hair and is pushed or offset longitudinally in the direction of its forward end so as to laterally offset or curve the hair of the layer, as shown at 26.
The second waver is oppositely positioned on the layer of hair with its forwardend facing in an opposite direction. and after clamping is ofiset in the opposite direction, as shown so as to curve the layer of hair 25 as at 27 in a direction opposite tothat shown at 26 andthis interposed portion 27 of the hair which lies between the two hair wavers is also .crimped upwardly and held between the wavers as shown in Figure 2.
The crest forming fianges 22 bind against the opposite sides of the interposed crimp 27 of hair so as to substantially crease it and form a decided ridge or crest. The clip 20 extends across these oppositely disposed wavers and is secured thereto as shown in Figure 2 so as to hold them in this offset relation and thus shape the hair as desired. Of course, the wavers may be used in any desired number from top to bottom of the and being relatively fiatfor sliding engagement against the scalp and beneath a layer of hair, and a second member hmgedly con nected at one end in edgewise relation to the base member and adapted for swinging movement toward the same and arranged to overlie the base member, said members having interlocking means at their freegends, said second member having depending comb teeth extending toward the base member and adapted to engage in the layer of hair to hold the same flat and intact during the longitudinal sliding movement of the waver subsequent to, closing the same on the layer of hair.
2. A hair waver comprising a flat base member adapted for engagement beneath a layer of hair, and a second member pivoted at one end in edgewise relation to the base member adapted to be swung downwardly thereover to engage the outer side of the layer of hair and having comb teeth adapted to engage the layer of hair to hold the same intact, said base and outer members having interlocking portions at their free ends for securing the members together.
3. A hair waver comprising a resilient base member relatively flat and elongated for engagement beneath a layer of hair and having a slot in its forward end, an outer. member pivotally connected to the other end of the base member and having a portion in edgewise relation to the base member and provided with inwardly extending comb teeth adapted to engage through the layer of hair and with the base member and provided upon its-free end with a depending shouldered projection adapted to snap into said slot when the outer member is swung down upon the base member for interlocking the members together by the relative resilient action of the members.
4:. A hair waver comprising a fiat base member having a slot in one end and upu turned ears at its opposite end, a flat resilient outer member pivotally connected at one end between said ears and adapted for edgewise engagement over the base member and having relatively shallow comb teeth at its inner edge for engagement in a layer of hair interposed between the base member and the outer member, said outer member having a shouldered and cammed projection at its outer end adapted for snapping engagement through said slot to hold the members in interlocked engagement by the resilient action of the members.
5. A hair waver comprising an elongated fiat base portion, a flat outer portion hinged at. one end to the base portion and adapted to swing over upon the same into engagement therewith for clamping a layer of hair betweenthe portions, said portions having interlocking means at their free ends for securing the portions in clamping position, and crest forming flanges extending outwardly and upwardly from the opposite sides of said second member for cooperation with like flanges of a second waver lying adjacent thereto.
6. A hair waver comprising a base member, an outer member pivotally connected to the base member, means for releasably holding the members together in closed position with a layer of hair interposed between the members, and crest forming flanges carried by the outer member extending from the opposite sides thereof, and adapted toengage portions of the layer of hair crimped upwardly between adjacent hair wavers.
7 In combination with a plurality of hair wavers, each having a base member for engagement beneath a layer of hair and an edgewise disposed outer member carried by the base member for engagement over the outer side of the layer of hair, each waver also having laterally spaced crest forming flanges, and a clip havingan arch portion bridging the crest forming flanges of adj acent wavers and provided on its ends with friction engaging members for detachable engagement with the upstanding edges of the outer members of the wavers for holding the same together with. the crest of hair between the adjacent flanges and in longitudinally offset relation.
1 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
