10 such as a sponge for example, the same being provided with a wide mouthed openneck, of ample size, to permit-the introduction of the wet material or sponge readily into the holder, and for permitting the ready removal of the material or spongefor the purpose of cleansing it; Furthermore, the wide monthed open neck permits the easy pouring of water therethrough and onto the sponge or the like without danger of spilling the water ontothe outsideof the holder, etc., such pouringbeing accomplished with the neckof the holder directed upwardly, the holderl then' being inverted and attachedto the supporting base of theholder.` Preferably the supporting baseis ponderons so as to support the holder and the-remainder 'oft-he appliance without danger ofthe appliance becoming upset: when itis 5in: use or; otherwise. Referring to the drawings, the supporting 4S-f base 10 is preferably circular and may be composed of metal, glass or other suitably heavy material so as tosupport ,the appli-v ance without danger of its'tipping over. rlhe base 10 is preferablyprovided with a cavity "`11 so'as to somewhat lighten it and at the Vsubstantially flat and same time-enable vit to more properly rest upon a `table or other support. The diameter of the holder 14 is preferably much base 10, and as the said holder is located at the top of the appliance when itis in use inY smoking, it can easily be seen and observed by the smoker, the smoke passing through the sponge producing weird yet attractive effects.

The holder half way of its neck and its apex with openings which are provided by nipples 19, that extend diametrically of the holder, such nipples being exteriorly screw-threaded for receiving screw-threaded removable eXtension nipples 20, 21. These extension nipples may be of hard rubber. A coupling member is provided, having` a suitable head 22 with oppositely extending necks 23, 2li, all preferably made in one piece of hard rubber. This coupling memberis removable, its neck 23 being inserted with a friction fit into the extension nipple 21, and the coupling member being provided with a through passage which leads to thevbowl or holder 25 of a tobacco pipe provided with a stem 26 having an Yenlarged bore 27 to receive the neck 24, whereby to removably couple the pipe with the coupling member. is considerably greater in diameter than that of the bowl 25 so that it has a spacious chamber whichwhen filled with a wet sponge 18, for example, provides a very extensive surface at which thel wired and attractive eects produced by the smoke arevisible.

A second coupling member is also provided, comprising a suitable head 29 and oppositelyextending necks 30, 31, the neck 30' being inserted with a friction fit into the eX- tension nipple 20,whereby to removably sel curethe said coupling member to said nipple. The

It will be seen that the parts ofthe smoking applicance may be detached from each other for convenient shipment or storing away in compact condition and that the partsy may be readily reassembled for use.

A tobacco smoking appliance, comprising a transparent holder for absorbent material, having an integral wide-mouthed open neck, and provided with integral nipples eX- tending outwardly therefrom at diametrically opposite points, a supporting base, into thetop of which the neck is threaded, a tobacco holder and a mouth-piece, and removable couplingmeans for connecting the tobacco holder and mouth-piece with the respective nipples, the interior diameter of the said nipples being greater thanthe passages through the coupling means.

A tobacco smoking appliance, comprising a transparent spherical holder for absorbent material, having an integral widemouthed open Vneck approaching the diameter of the holder, and permitting the ready insertion of the absorbent material, said holder provided with integral nipples extending horizontally outward at diametrically opposite points fromv the greater dimension of the holder, a relatively heavy supporting base of greater diameter than the spherical holder and into the top of which the neck is threaded, a tobacco holder and a mouth-piece, and removable coupling means for connecting the tobacco holder and mouth-piece with the respective nipples.

LA tobacco smoking appliance, comprising a transparent, spherical holder for absorbent material, having a wide-mouthed neck approaching, but slightly less than, the diameter of the interior of the holder, a relatively heavy supporting base, with the top of which the neck is threaded, whereby the holder and absorbent material are positioned above the base, said base having means to enable it to rest ona level surface, the holder provided with diametrically opposite, horizontally disposed openings above the neck, means for connecting a tobacco holder with one opening, and means for connecting a mouth-piece with the other opening.
