Description
.lune` 17, 1930. T. L. WHITEl SUPPORTING BRACKET Filed Oct. 15. 1927 Patented June 17, 1930 UNITE s ortica THOMAS L. WHITE, OF YOUNGSTOW'N, OHEO, liSSGhTOlt'.IO` THE COMMERCIAL SHEARING AND STAMPING COMPANY, OF YOUNGSTGVJN, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIOV SPPOR-TNG BRACKET Application ledcctober 15, 1927. Serial No. 226,335.
The present invention relates broadly to supports, and more particularly to a supporting bracket of such nature as to be especially useful in the supporting of lavatories and similar fixtures. It has heretofore been customary in the art to which this invention relates to provide cast metal brackets which,
besides being unnecessarily heavy, are objectionable by reason of the fact that if tightly attached to an uneven surface in such manner as to provide a firm support, they not infrequently crack or fracture.
f changes in the construction and shape of the respective parts may be made without departing either from the spirit of the invention or the scope of my broader claim.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevational view, partly broken away, showing my improved bracket in position on a supporting surface;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line Hull of Figure 1,7looking in the direction of the arrows, and,
Figure isa vertical sectional view on the nu@ tri-ni or iugm-e i, looking in al@ ain f rection of the arrows.
In accordance with the present invention, there may be provided a supporting member 2, preferably formed of sheet metal, and having substantially a channel shaped cross section. The supporting member, when so shaped, provides a bottom portion 3 and a side portion 4C. Each of the side portions is preferably provided with laterally extending flanges 5, provided with openings 6 for the reception of screws or other securing means 7, for attaching the supporting member to a supporting surface S.
of openings 8 of elongated form adapted for.
the reception of spaced lugs 9, formed on the sides l() of a channel shaped bracket arm 11. The bracket arm is likewise preferably of sheet metal, pressed to the desired shape to provide tapered sides 10 and to provideone or more openings 12 in the bottom portion 13 for the attachment of the lavatory or th like to the bracket.
lit will be apparent to those skilled in the art that by providing lugs 9 on each of the sides 10, there is created a substantial area of contact between the supporting member and the bracket arm, the actual points of engagement being suliiciently spaced to prevent relative twisting or bending movement between the. respective parts. This constitutes oneof the advantages of the present invention.
Further advantages arise from the provision of a supporting bracket constructed entirely of sheet metal whereby the desired strength is obtained with a minimum weight of material.
Still further advantages arise from the provision of a. supporting member and a` bracket arm, both of channel shape in cross section and so constructed that the parts when inter-engaged provide a substantial area of contact therebetween. Y
@ther advantages of the invention are inherent in the use of a flexible supporting arm adapted to conform to an irregular supporting surface, without liability of cracking or fracturing.
l claim:
As an article of manufacture, a supporting bracket comprising a pressed metal supporting member of channel shaped cross section adapted to be secured to a supporting surface and provided with a plurality of openings spaced transversely and vertically of said supporting member in the bottom thereof, and a sheet metal bracket armof channel shaped cross section, each of the side flanges of the bracket arm having projections thereon at the top and bottom of the flanges and lying in the plane of the flanges, said projecion tions being adapted to enga-ge said spaced openings, the web of the channel shaped bracket arln between the side flanges thereof being several times Wider than the thickness of the side flanges so that the Web cooper- 5 ates Withl the supporting :member between the transverse'lyspaced open-ings .to provide lateral stability for the supporting bracket. In testimony whereof I have hereunto lset my hand. 0 THOMAS L. WHITE.
