' This invention relates to the class of buckles, buttons and clasps, and pertains particularly to an improved type of buckle designed particularly for use upon the legs of ,5 knickers, though, of course, not restricted to such use. g

The primary object of the present inven tion is to provide anovel type of buckle which will securely hold down and held against slipping, the end of a strap, such for example, as the strap which is employed for securing the bottom edges of the legs'of knickers.

The invention broadly contemplates the provision of a back plate havingside flanges between which side flanges intermediate the ends thereof is pivotally mounted a pair of frames. These frames are normally arranged in the same plane between the side flanges of the base and parallel with the base I and one of the frames has one transverse edge provided with a series of teeth which are de- I signed to engage a strap passing through the frame, the base plate at the end edge adjacent the free edge of the teeth carrying frame also having upstanding teeth against which the last mentioned frame presses the strap.

The invention will. be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present invention with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim. Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts "throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates generally the base portion or plate of the buckle embodying the present invention, which plate, as shown, has a series of transverse recesses 2 formed therethrough. forming cross bars 3 over one of which a securing strap or loop 4 may be engaged as shown in Figures 2, 4, and 5 for holding the buckle upon a body of material'such as indicated by the numeral 5.

Each side edgeof theplate 1 is turned outwardly to form a flange 6 and each'of these flanges has formed therethroughsub-- stantially mid-way between the ends thereof, a pair of relatively'cloisely spaced aper ture 7 p and adjacent each end the inner face of each flangevis pressed to form a depres sion 8,the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described. One-transverse edge of the plate I has a forwardly extending relatively narrow flange 9 formed thereacross, while the other transverse edge has a similarly 'formed flange 10, the edge of which is cut to provide a series of teeth 11.

Co-acting with the plate 1 is a pair of frames 12and 13. Each of'the

frames

12 and 13 is of a length to snugly fit transverse- 1y of the base 1 between the side flanges 6 thereof,fand'each has projecting from each end adjacent one side, a pin 14 which when the frames arein sideby side relation be-v tween the. flanges 6 engages in an adjacent aperture 7. The open frames 12 and "13 are thus pivotall'ymount'ed before the faces of the plate 1 and" between the side flanges thereof to swing outwardly into back to back relation, and as is shown in Figure 5, these frames are of a width to bring the outer sides thereof into position over the

transverse flanges

9 and 10 of the base plate whenthe frames are arranged substantially parallel thereto. Each of the

frames

12 and 13 has a laterally extending flange 15 at each end, each of which flanges is pressed outwardly to form a button 16 which when the frame is closed down against the base plate frictionally engages in the adjacent recess 8 of the adjacent flange 6 to hold the frame in place. The frame 13 has the inner edge of the inner side bar 16 thereof provided with a plurality of teeth 17. When the buckle is secured in position as shown in Figure 5 a strap such as that indicated by the numeral 18, may be extended first through the frame 12 entering the same beneath the outer side bar and passing over the inner side bar gmthereof. It is then passed over the inner side bar of the frame 13 through this frame and under the outer side bar thereof, thereby passing directly over the teeth 11 of the base plate 1. It will thus be seen that when ZSjiZllQ frames 12 and 13 are pressed down against the base plate 1 they will be held in such position by the coaction between the buttons 16 and the recesses 8 to hold the strap in place. At the same time the frame so; 13 will press the strap against the teeth 11. to prevent movementof the strap, and the teeth- 17 of this frame will further act to engage and hold the strap in position.

12 and 13 may be opened to extend outwardly from the base plate 1, as shown in Figure 4, after which the strap can be shifted as desired. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is i A buckle of the character described comprising a plate, said plate having outwardly extending side and end portions, said side 5 portions having spaced recesses positioned inwardly from the opposite ends thereof. a pair of belt gripping members pivotally mounted in the side portions of the plate, each of said gripping members having an 50.,elongated slot therein for receiving a belt therethrough, one of said gripping members having teeth extending inwardly of the slot and being mounted on the inner side thereof, one of the end portions of the plate having outstanding teeth whereby to engage a belt,

said gripping 'members having recess engaging means for engagement with the spaced recesses in said side portions whereby to hold the gripping members between the side portions of the plate when in locked position. 7
