The purpose of the invention is to provide a device particularly adapted for use in connection with swinging doors so that, in the open position of the latter, the door may be effectively locked in such position to prevent its swinging; to provide a manually actuable lock for use in connection with the attachment; and to provide a construction which will be of simple form and 19 therefore capable of cheap production and sale at a low price.
With this purpose in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,

The invention comprises a support consisting of the bars 10 and 11 made preferably of angle iron, the latter at one end being connected with the former at a point adjacent one end of the same, as indicated at 12, and further being connected with said former bar by means of a transverse brace member 14:. The bar member 10 is designed for attachment to the door 15 and the bar member 11 is, therefore, disposed in a diagonal plane with respect to the plane of the door and it is of a length such that when the door is open, as indicated in Figure 1, its inner end, which carries the upstanding stop 16, may be disposed to place the stop in abutting relation with the inner edge of a bead 17 carried by the top 18 of the door frame.
The stop thus limits the movement of the door in open position and to preclude its swinging inwardly to closed position, a latch member is provided in the form of a pawl 19 pivotally connected, as at 20, with the bar 11. The nose of the pawl is spaced from the stop 16 and, when the door is in open position, it abuts the outer face of the stop bead 17. The upper edge 21 of the pawl is inclined as shown and the pawl being yieldingly impelled upward, the inclined edge 21 will engage the under edge of the bead 17 in the opening movement of the door and depress the pawl until the stop shall have engaged the inner face of the bead when the pawl will be raised into obstructing relation with the bead and thus preclude closing movement of the door.
The means for yieldingly impelling the pawl upward consists of a spiral spring 22 terminally secured to the bar 11 and to a link 23 which has terminal pivotal connections with angle plates 24 and 24 disposed adjacent remote ends of the bar 11, the former being pivotally mounted on the same, as at 25, and the latter being an integral part of the pawl 19 and abutting a pin 26 carried by the bar 11 at the angle remote from the pivotal connection with the link v 23 to limit the upward movement of the pawl 19. The corresponding angle of the other plate 24 has connected therewith a cord 27 terminating in a finger ring 28.
Obviously, the application of pull to the cord 27 will serve to rock the angle plate 24 and pawl 19 on their pivotal connections on the bar 11 and thus move the pawl out of obstructing relation with the stop bead 17, whereupon the door may be swung to closed position, the protruding inner end of the bar- 11 swinging in behind the wall adjacent the door frame of the structure closed by the door. The release of the pull on the cord 27 will permit the spring 22 to function and therefore elevate the nose of the pawl or dog and in swinging the door to open position, the pawl or dog will be depressed upon engagement of the inclined edge 21 with the stop bead 17.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A swinging door latch having a terminal stop member and an adjacent springactuated pawl, a stop member mountable on the door frame for abutting engagement on opposite sides by the stop and pawl, and manual means for actuating the pawl.
2. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a stop member for mounting on a door frame, a support mountable on the door thereof and having, a bar member disposed in diagonal relation thereto, a stop carried at the end of the bracket for abutting engagement with the stop member, a springactuated pawl having an inclined edge engaged by the lower edge of the stop member and a nose spaced from the stop for abutting engagement with the stop member on the opposite side from the stop.

A device for the purpose indicated comprising a stop member for mounting on a door frame, a support having an inwardly directed bar disposed in diagonal relation to the door thereof andcprovided with a terminal stop for abutting engagement with the stop member on one side and a pawl spaced from the stop and adapted for abutting engagement with the stop member on the opposite side, a pair of angle plates pivotally mounted on said bar member, a link} having pivotal connections with said angle plates, one of the latter being integral with thepawhand a pull cord connected with the other of said angle plates. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a stop member for mounting on a door frame, a support having an inwardly directed bar disposed in diagonal relation v to the door thereof and provided with a terminal stop forabutting engagement with the stop member on one side and a pawl spaced from the stop and adapted for abutting engagement with the stop member on the opposite side, a pair of angle plates pivotally mounted on said bar member, a link having pivotal connections with said angle plates, one of the latter being integral with the pawl, a pull cord connected with the other of said angle plates, the pawl'having 40 aninclined upper edge for engagement with the lower edge of the stop member, and a spring tensioned between the link and said bar.
