This invention relates generally to lighters and has more particular reference to a novel lighter intended for cigarette use.
The invention has for an object the proo'vision of a device of the class mentioned which is of simple durable construction, desirable and efficient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
The invention proposes the use of a con tainer adapted for attachment to a table or ash tray, and containing cotton or other suitable absorbing material saturated with benzinc, and the container is arranged for holding a removable torch provided with a steel point adapted to be rubbed against flint material supported on the container for producing a flash so as to light the wick.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the object and advanta es thereof, reference will be had to the ollowing description'and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The reference numeral 12 indicates generally an ash tray of any design or construction, and a stand 13 is attached to the ash tray and supports a container 1% in which there is benzine saturated cotton 15. This 543 container is formed with a top opening thru 1928. Serial No. 289,152.
which a torch 16 is inserted into the container. Torch 16 comprises a handle portion 17 lntegral with a stopper portion 18 arran ed for engaging the opening in the top 9 the container, and from which a stem portion 19 projects. A steel point 20 is engaged in the bottom of the stem 19, and a bushing 21 is fastened on the bottom of the stem, and this bushing has integral downwardly projecting fingers 22 for holding a peace of benzine saturated cotton 23 in proximity of the free end of the steel oint 20. A bracket 24 is attached to the si e of the container and flint material 25 is secured to the bracket.
In operation of the device, benzine from the cotton 15 works its way into the cotton 23. For lighting a cigarette the torch 16 is wlthdrawn from the container, and the steel point 20 rubbed on the material 25 for causmg flashes which ignite the benzine in the torch 23. Before replacing the torch into the. container, the flame should be blown out.
In Fig. 4, the stem 19 is shown provided with a steel point 20, and with a cotton holding bracket 22' of a shape different to that shown in Fig. 3, and benzine saturated cotton 23 is shown engaged in the bracket. In Fig. 5 a horizontal steel point rod 20 is shown attached at its center to the bottom so of the stem 19. In Fig. 6 the stem 19 has a large hollow steel point 2O with a plurality of slots 26, secured at its end, and the saturated cotton 23 is within the hollow of the point 20 and ignitible thru slots 26. In Fig. 7 the stem 19 has a horizontal tubular steel member 20 attached at its lower end, and this tubular member has pointed ends 27. Saturated cotton 23is engaged in the tubular member and extends therefrom to the points 27. The operation of these various torches, is the same as given in reference to Fig. 3, and consists mainly in striking thesteel points of the torches against flint for igniting the cotton 23.

' In Fig; 10, the container 14 has a tubular member 28 surrounding the to opening'for the torch 16, and extending own into the container. The torch 16' consists of a handle 17, a stopper portion 18 a stem 19, a cotton holdlng bracket 22 with a layer of benzine saturated cotton 23 supported on the inner face of the container wall and remaining clear of the open bottom of the tube 28, and a ring of steel 29 secured on the outside of the bracket. A ring flint material30 is secured in the tubular member 28 and is, arranged, for grinding contact with and in the path of motion of or collar ofthe lever, a valve hlngedly mounted on the tubular member and adapted to close the latter element and formed with an arm pivotall connected with the link, and a means or holdingthe lever inclined upwards or downwards as positioned by a rim fixed on a torch insertable in the tubular the ring of steel 29 when the torch 16 is ,member, and holding the valve opened or withdrawn from the container to cause sparkling for igniting the cotton 23 as the latter is extracted.
. Intermediate of the top and bottom of the tube 28, a lever 31 is pivotally mounted on the tube, as at 32 and extends from the inside of the tube to the outside. A link 33 is pivotally connected on the outer end of the lever 31, and with the arm 34 of a ivotally mounted valve 35 arranged for c osing the lower end of the tube 28. As ring 36 is attached to the container 14' an presses against the link 33 for holding the lever 31 inclined upwards or downwards, reference bein had to the outer end of the lever 31, for olding the valve 35 opened or closed respectively. The inner end of the lever 31 projects into the path of motion of the steel ring 29 so that when the torch 16 is withdrawn from! the container the outer end of the lever is tilted downwards for closing the valve 35 before the ring 29 strikes the flint material 30 for causing sparks. When the torch'is reinserted into the container, the ring 29 engages the inner end of the lever 31 for moving the .outer end upwards and opening the valve 35.
