Description
S. TILTON.
MUZZLE-S FOR GALVES.
No. 176.383. Patented April 18. 1876.
WITNESSES INVENTOR r Attorney NVFEI'ERS, FHOTO-LITNOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE,
SMILIE TILTON, OF ATLANTIC, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MUZZLES FOR CALVES.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,383, dated April 18, 1876 application filed February 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SMILIE TILTON, of Atlantic, in the county of Oassand State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Calf-Muzzle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a top view of the muzzle; Fig. 2, a front view of the same.
Like letters'desiguate corresponding parts in both figures.
.The object of my invention is to provide a suitable muzzle or shield to be applied to the nostrils of calves to prevent their sucking cows when it is not desired that they should do so, as when running at large in pastures.
The instrument is composed of a bow or clamp, A, bent around so that the ends a a nearly meet on one side, and clasp the bridge between the nostrils of the calf between them for attaching the instrument to and holding it in its place, this bow being armed with long and sharp-pointed pins B B projecting in various directions-forward, upward, and 1aterally--so that, when the calves attempt to suck, the points prick the cows and cause them to shun the approach of the calves. In the .present invention I make the bow A rigid, of
malleable iron, or other suitable material; and one feature of the invention consists in an improved device for clamping it to the nose of the calf. A portion, 0, at one end of the bow is hinged or pivoted at b to the main part, so
that it can be swung away from the opposite end, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, for opening the clamping space, to insert or remove the. clamp. When the instrument is placed in proper position this movable end is swung back into place, as shown by full lines in the same figure, whereby its end a is brought so near the opposite end as to securely clamp and hold the instrument upon 'the thin cartilage of the nose in the right position, from which the calf cannot detach it. The movable piece 0 is held in the clamping position by aspring, d, which is secured in a proper position in the main body of the bow, and springs into a uotch,f, of the movable part, but not so strongly but that a little force properly applied by the hands readily swings it back for removing the instrument.
I employ two or more pointed pins, B a B a, at least one on each side, of unusual length, and projecting in a direct transversely lateral direction, as shown, considerably farther than the other pins. These pins prevent the calfs approaching the cow sidewise, and even getting its nose near enough to the cow'to reach her udders.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A calf-muzzle having a rigid bow, A, provided with a swinging portion, 0, jointed to it, and held in a clamping position by-a spring, d, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
Specification signed by me this 9th day of October, 1875.
SMILIE TILTON.
