Description

June 23, 1925.
C. D. BALDWIN COW TAIL HOLDER Filed Nov. 2. 1923 li/mr Patented June 23, 1925.
UNITED STATES CLARENCE D. BALDWIN, OF DEMING, WASHINGTON.
COW-TAIL HOLDER.
Applicationfiled November 2, 1923.
TO all whom Z't may 00720677 Be it known that CLARENCE D. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deming, in the county of VVhatcom and State of lVashington, has invented new and useful Improvements in Cow-Tail Holders, of Which the following is a Specification.
It is a purpose of the present invention to provide, in a device of this kind, a. construction of holder to be used for attaching a cow s tail to the left hind leg.
Another purpose is to provide a cow tail holder comprising a clamp which may engage with either hind leg of the cow, preferably the left, together with means on the clamp to Which any suitable connector may be attached for connecting said clamp to another similar clamp. The clamp consists of opposing jaws, each jaw having upper and lower parts, said parts of one jaw merging into similar parts of the opposite jaw, said upper and lower parts being connected to insure a yieldable clamp. The present device s adapted for use by dairymen for preventing swtching of the tail of the cow when in the stall and connected to the stanchion.
A further purpose is to provide a cow tail holder or clamp constructed of spring wire material bent to form clamping j aws which engage with either hind leg, preferably the left leg, at a point above the hock jont and so disposed as to clamp the hair end of the tail between the arcuate portion of the clamp and the leg.
A stll further purpose is the provision of a clamp constructed from a single length of spring wire material with loop ools which act to provide tension as well as resiliency against the action of which the 'jaws of the clamp may be opened, there being means for connecting the parts of the clamp which carry the loop coils which have eyes which may be used for connecting two holders.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative and that, while still keeping within the scope o't the invention, any desired modifications of detail and desired proportions may be made in the apparatus according to the cir- Cumstances.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter set for-th, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:
Serial No. 672399.
Figure 1 is a. view in perspective showing a clamp carried by the left hind leg of a cow with the hair end of the tail engaged between the clamp and the leg.
Figure 2 is an onlarged detail view of the clamp.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a clamp which is constructed from a single length of spring steel wire which is bent at two locations 3, the portions of the wire beyoncl the bends being curved as shown and parallel in edge view. The portions 4: beyond said bends merge into arcuate portions 5, the curvatures of which conform substantially to the cross sectional contour of the animal s leg. These arcuate portions 5 Cross and merge into loops 6.
The loops 6 are of coil construction and where the portions 5 Cross in order to merge into and form the loops, eyes 7 of a connecting cross piece 8 engage, thereby holding the portions 5 relatively parallel in edge view. The loops 6 have eyes 9 which may be used 'or connecting two holders. The portions 4 of the clamp constitute jaws which engage on opposite sides of the hind leg of the animal at a point immediately above the hock joint. The portion of the leg above the hock joint is of such a shape as to conform to the jaws of the clamp and thereby prevent detac-hment of the clamp. The hair end of the cow s tail is engaged between one of the jaws of the clamp and the leg, preferably the left leg.
The invention having been set forth, what is'claimed is:
A cow tail holder comprising opposed spring loop jaws with curved parts adjacent the loops of said jaws and conforming to the shape of the cow s leg at a point above the hock joint thereof, said spring loop jaws comprising correspondingly curved parts, said parts of each jaw being in parallelism, said correspondingly curved parts at points remote from the first curved parts of the jaws intersecting and merging into spring loops having eyes opposite the points of intersection, and a connector between the parts of the jaws and having eyes receiving said parts immediately adjacent their points of intersection, said opposed jaws, the spring loops and their eyes being Constructed from a single length of spring wire.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signatnre.
CLARENCE D. BALDWIN.
