IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent Nol76. 380, dated April 18, 1876; application filed February 16, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W. H. TAMBLING, of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with a table-top, of two legs hinged directly to the under side thereof, two legs hinged to a block under the table-top, a hinged board, and a coil-spring operating on said hinged board, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 a bottom view, of my table. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, showing the legs as folded against the top.

In the figures, A represents the top, and B B the legs, of the table. The legs are hinged to the under side of the table in such a manner that they will fold inward, and one set over the other. In order to accomplish this effectually, and make the legs lie proper- 1y, one set over the other, I hinge one set directly to the bottom of the table, and the otherto a block, w, secured to said bottom, so that the legs on one side are higher at the hinged point than the others are.

The moment the table is placed in position, and its legs opened out to a vertical line, the spring d forces the board 0, so that it stands edgewise between the two sets of legs, and securely. holds them so that they cannot fold. In folding the table, the board (J is closed against the bottom, and then the legs are allowed to fold in toward the center, overlapping each other.

I am aware that a folding table having its legs hinged in dilferent planes is not of itself new; also, that a hinged boa-rd has been used for holding the legs of a folding table rigid while in use; hence I do not claim such as being my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the top A, legsvB B, hinged directly to the under part of the same, the legs B B, hinged to the block :10, attached to the bottom of the same, the hinged board 0, and the coil-spring d, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
