Description

June 17; 1930 I N. CASAPOLLO 1,763,756
-- I GARBAGE CAN Filed July 9, 1928 2' Sheets-Sheet -1 June 17, 1930;, N. CASAPOLLO GARBAGE CAN 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed July 9, 1928 Inventor M'cZa/a: Case 21 76:
semiae 1 m PATENT: OFFICE L nenom c amonno, or new vonx, n. Y.
I GARBAGE can nmanned July 9,
, This invention relates to new and useful improvements ingarbage cans and aims to provide a novel, simple and useful can construction consisting of a construction con- 5 sisting of a container having a lid hinged upon the upper end. thereof, simple and effieient operating mean being provided whereby the lid may be swung to open position by the engagement of the foot upon a foot 1o lever so as to permit the easy placement of the garbage within the can.
, Furthermore one of the important features of the present invention resides in the provision of a .detachable connection between the lid and the container whereby to permit the lid to be entirely removed from the can so that the contents thereof maybe properly discharged. With the 'foregoingand other objects 1n 0 view as the nature-1o 7 invention will be better understood, the -1=same fcomprises the novel form, combinationlandarifangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and cla med. In the drawing wherein like;} ,reference characters indicate corresponding ,.-parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective of garbageo'can, r Figure 2" a top plan view thereof, the 11d being removed,
Figure 3 is a vertical detail section dlsclosing'the lid operating mechanism and Figure 4 is a detail horizontal section taken substantially on the line 4--4 of Figure 3.
Now havmg particular reference to the drawings, my novel device consists of a container 5 of suitable material and dimension, the same being open at its upper end as clearly'illustrated in Figures 2 and 3.
4 This container 5 is constructed interiorly with a vertical chamber 6 directly at the side wall of the container,- the-lower end of the chamber having communication with a passageway 7 constructed in the bottom wall of the container. The forward end of this passageway terminates into a small housing 8,
the front wall of which is defined by the side i wall of the container 5, said wall of the conmy improved ices. Serial in. 291,310;
tainer'at the housing having an opening 9 therein. y
- The upper endof the vertical chamber 6 1s closed to provide a horizontal wall 10 at the open top side of the container 5 and arranged upon this wall intermediate the ends thereof is an'upstanding abutment 11 for a purpose presently to be described. This wall 10 is further equipped at oppo- Y site sides of said abutment 11 with spring metal clips 12-12. The can further consists of a suitable lid 13, the perimeter of which is formed with a straight edge 14, the material at this straight edge being rolled to provide a sleeve for the reception of an elongated pivot pin 15.
The said pin sleeve adjacent opposite ends thereof are provided with cut outs 1616 so i as to permit the pin 15 to be forcibly introduced into the spring clip 16-16 as clearly disclosed in Figures 1 and 3. Obviously this provides a hingedconnection between the lid and the container and at the same time will permit the rapid removal of the lid from the container or its association therewith. The side wall of the container 5 at the ends of the pin guide sleeve of said lid are provided with bail end receiving brackets 17 --17 while pivoted. thereto are theends of a wire bail 18, the legs of which are normally disposed beneath the opposite ends of the lid pivot pin 15 so that whensaid bail 18 is'raised the pin will be forced from the clip 1616 the lid thereby becoming detached from the 'container; Obviously the vertical abutment 11 is provided for the purpose of limiting the swinging movement of the lid in an opening direction. y K
Pivoted within-the upper end'of the chamher 6 as at 19 is a J-shaped lever 20,'the outer 9o upturned end thereof being rojected through a slot in the inner wall 0 the said chamber. The inner end of this lever is attached to one end of a cord or cable 26 which extends downwardly in the chamber 6 and is trained over a pulley 27 and the lower end of the chamber from which oint said cable is extended through the horizontal passagewa in the container 5.
- t the rearend of the housing 8 at the ice forward end of said passageway 7 the cord or cable is trained over a guide pulley 28 andds attached at this end to the inner end of a foot lever 29 pivoted within the housing 8, the outer end of this lever projecting through the said slot in the front wall of the housing and shaped to provide a foot pedal as clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 4.
Obviously the depressing of this lever will provide a pull upon the cord or cable 26 to swing the outer upwardly extending end of the lever 20 in an upward direction to cause the raising of the lid thus facilitating the disposition ofthe garbage therein.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple, and efi'icient garbage can that is well adapted for all the purposes] heretofore designated. r
Even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting ofcertain detail structural elements, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without affecting the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is: p
1. In a garbage can of thercharacter described, a container open at its upper end, a pair of pin receiving members associated with the upper open end of thecontainer, a lid for the container and a pivot pin associated with the perimeter of the lid and adapted for engagement within said" pin receiving members whereby to provide a detachable and pivot-al connection between the lid and the container, and means associated with the container and adapted to be moved into engagement with the pin whereby to cause the reieasing of the'pin from said receiving memers. V.
2. In a garbage can of the character described, a container open at its upper end, a spring clip associated with the upper open end'ofthe container, a lid for the open end of the container, a plvot pin associated withthe perimeter of the lid and adapted to be engaged between its ends within said spring clip whereby to rovide a detachable and pivotal connection tween the lid and the container, and means mounted for swinging movement upon the container adapted to be swung into engagement with the pm for automatically releasing the same from said clip.
whereof I afiix my signature.
' In testimon ICHOLAS CASAPOLLO.
