Description

June l0, 1930. l F- E, TlTcoMB 1,763,488
BARBERS TOOL CHEST Filed Oct. 26, 1928 INVENTOR Patented June 10, 1930 PATENT OFFICE FRED E. TITCOMB, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO BARBER/S TOOL CHEST My present invention has reference to what l will term a barbers tool chest, that is, a chest for barbers razors, the primary object being-the provision of a device for this purpose whereby any desired number of razors when not in use may be safely housed in a vertical position in a box-like receptacle and the shank end thereof may be easily, quickly and simultaneously elevated so that the barber may withdraw the razor he desires for use.
A further object is the provision of a barbers tool chest which in addition to providing a housing for razors also provides a receptacle for a dry hone and which is provided with a cover whereby the razors are ully protected from dust, dampness, etc., when not required for use, the said cover also providing a receptacle :tor the. box when the latter is open, and the chest not only providing a means for protecting the razors, permitting the easy and individual removal of such razors therefrom but may likewise be employed as "a carrying case.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better un derstood, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and operative association of parts, one satisfactory embodiment of which is disclosed by the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement, the chest being received inthe cover therefor.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view approximately on the line 2 2 of Figure 1, the dotted lines illustrating the manner in which the razors are elevated to permit of the withdrawal thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Figure l..
Figure 4 is a'perspective view showing the device in closed position.
As disclosed by the drawings I make use of a box-like chest 1 which is of substantially rectangular formation and which, of course, may be construe-ted of any desired material. 'lhe chest .1. has Fired thererhi at ene of its `from the barrel 13.
ends, a plate provided with outer upwardly rounded and downwardly extending portions 4, and the said outer straight and rounded portion of the plate is formed with spaced notches 8 dividing the plate into spaced iingers.
At a suitable distance from the second end of the box there is pivoted, as at 5, an angle plate. rlhe arms of this plate are indicated for distinction by the numerals 6 and 7. The arm 7 is of a materially greater length than the arm 6. Both oi' the arms 6 and 7 are provided with notches 8 and 9,' respectively, which are in a line with the notches 3. The inner walls provided by the notches 8 and 9 adord a rest for razors, indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 2 and designated by the numeral 10. The ends of these razors are received in the notches 3. The shorter arms G of the angle plate are of such length that any of the lingers 11 provided between the notches 8 may be easily grasped by the operator. lt should be stated that the notches 8 extend entirely through the arm 6 and terminate at the barrel 13 through which the pivot 5 passes, and that the notches9 in the arm 7 terminate a suitable `distance away It will thus be noted that when the angle plate is swung by a pressure upon the fingers 11 the plate 7 will be brought to vertical position and will thus cant or elevate the razors 10 so that the same can be readily withdrawn from the chest.
A stop element 14 is arranged in the box or chest and in the path of contact with the lingers 11 of the plate 6 when the latter is swung to the dotted line position illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings and when in such position the arm 7 will be sustained in vertical position with respect to the box or chest 1.
The space between the stop element 14 and the end `of the box or chest adjacent thereto a'li'ords "ample room for a comparatively small dry hone 15 which, of course, may be readily withdrawn Jfrom the box when required tor use.
The box 1 is provided with a rectangular flanged cover 16. This @over affords recep 'ter the when the in puE sition and likewise closes the box when inserted thereover. The cover 1G, on one of its sides, adjacent to its ends, has laterally movable therethrough, in a line with the inner wall of the top thereof, the straight and parallel arms of substantially U-shaped wire Vmembers 17. These members may, of course, be employed for latching the cover on the box or chest but are primarily designed as supports for combs, brushes or other articles required by the tonsorial artist.
The advantages of the device as above described are manifold. Then the angle'plate is raised it keeps the receptacle handy for the barber to choose from. When the razors are lowered and the cover is arranged on the box or chest the improvement may be arranged in a small drawer or in the barbers pocket. The device occupies only a very small space and can be placed anywhere on the bench, leaving the space usually occupied by the razors, for bottles, brushes, tonies, etc. The razors are always held in an upright position so that it is impossible for them to be accidentally opened or subjectto common accidents such as the razors falling olf of the shelf, etc.
The chest can be readily raisedor moved to permit of the shelf being cleaned, and as the end of the box and the notches in the lower arm extending only partly thereinto, and a stop element for contacting with the lower arm when the angle plate is swung to bring thenormally lowered arm to vertical position.
3. A barbers tool chest comprising a box, an arched member arranged in one end of the box and having its outer face at the top notched to provide spaced fingers between the notches, a shaft arranged transversely in the box at a distance from the second end thereof,
an angle plate having a barrel which receives the shaft therethrough, and said plate providing an upper and a lower arm, the normally upper arm being materially less in length than the normallyV lower arm of the said plate and both of the arms having notches which aline with each other and which also aline with the notches at the end of the box, the notches in the normally upper arm extending entirely therethrough and the notches in the normally lower arm extending only partly therethrough and a stop element in the box for engaging with the lower arm when the plate is swung to bring the normally lower arm to vertical position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
. FRED E. TITCOMB.
previously stated, the chest affords a carrying case for the razors which is very important inasmuch as the barber is frequently called upon to perform his work in homes or in hospitals and, of course, the chest may be employed as a shipping case. Y Y
Having described the invention, I claim: .1. A barbers razor chest, comprising a box-like member, an arched plate which is slotted to provide spaced fingers between the notches-secured inthe box at one end thereof, an angle plate pivoted in thebox adjacentV to the other end thereof, said angle plate providing an upper anda lower arm, the upper arm of the said plate being materially less in length than the lower arm and both arms being provided vwith .longitudinal notches in alinement with the notches between the fingers in the end of the box and the notches in the lower arm extending only partly thereinto and a flanged cover for the box providing a receptacle for the box when the latter is opened, and slidable article holders movable laterally through one side adjacent the respective ends of the cover.
2. A barbers razor chest, comprising a box-like member, an arched plate fixed in one end of the box and having its top and outer side notchedto provide spaced fingers between the notches, an angle plate pivoted in thel box adjacent to the other end thereof and said plate providing an upperv and a lower arm, the upper arm of the said plate being materially less Yin length than the lower arm and both arms being provided with longitudinal notches'in alinement with the notches in
