The main objects of this invention are to provide a plunger or piston for pumps, hydraulic lifting power devices and the like which is well adapted to withstand heavy pressures, does not become inefiicient with wear, is very durable and at the same time simple and economical in its parts and in the assembly.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodi ment of my invention is illustrated in the 16 accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a plunger such as emplo ed in hydraulic rams or lifting jacks embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a-fragmentary view partially in section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the plunger being shown in coacting relation to a cylinder.
Fig. 3 is a disassembled fragmentary view of the several parts that constitute the sealing or packing portion of the plunger.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a cylinder and 2 the body of a plunger. This plunger body has a central longitudinally disposed stud 3 threaded to receive the nut 4.
On the end of the body member I preferably arrange a supporting disk 5 of fibrous material. On this disk I arrange the outer cup-shaped member 6 formed of resilient 5 metal, its side walls being beveled on the I inner side at 7 to provide feathered edge 8 and a cylindrical portion 9 of substantial width. Within this member 6 I arrange an intermediate cup-shaped member 10 of fibrous material, the side wall of this member being tapered by beveling on its inner side, its outer portion 12 being cylindrical, the side wall tapering to a feather edge.
Within the intermediate member I arrange a cushioning disk 13 of fibrous material which supports the inner member 14 which is formed of thin resilient metal, this member 14 having flaring side walls and being beveled at 15 on the outer side to provide a feather edge 16.
The member 14 is normally supported out of engagement with the walls of the member 10 but when subjected to hea pressure, the supporting disk 13 yields an the member may yield to force the walls of the intermediate member in sealing engagement with the cylindrical walls. However, any fluid under pressure that passes the inner member acts to force the intermediate member into sealing engagement with the walls of the cylinder. These several parts are mounted on the stud 3 and are effectively supported thereby.
The member 10 is preferably formed of leather suitably threaded and conformed. The members 5 and 13 may also be of leather although I prefer some more resilient or yielding material.
My improved plungers are well adapted for use in hydraulic rams, lifting jacks and the like where the plungers work under heavy pressure or it is desired to prevent leakage. The structure is highly etficient under such working conditions, is very durable and such wear as may occur does not interfere with its sealing efliciency.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A plunger comprising a body member, a supporting disk of fibrous material arranged on the end of said body member, a cup-shaped outer member of resilient metal arranged on said supporting disk, the side walls of said outer packing member being tapered to a feather edge, a substantial portion of the outer surface of the side wall being cylindrical, a cup-shaped intermediate member of fibrous material arranged within and supported by said outer member to project substantially therefrom, the side wall of said intermediate member being tapered to a feather edge, the projecting portion thereof beingsubstantially cylindrical, a cushioning disk arranged within said intermediate member, a cup-shaped inner member of resilient metal having outwardly inclined walls projecting beyond the edge of the intermediate member and terminating in a feather edge, a stud on said body memher disposed centrally through said disk and plunger members, and a nut on said stud clamping said parts together, the walls of said inner member being normally supported out of contact with said intermediate memher by said cushioning disk, said cushion1ng member however permitting the inner member to engage theside wall of the intermediate member under pressure.
2. The plunger comprising a cup-shaped outer member of resilient metal having side walls tapered to a feather edge, a sub-' stantial portion of the outer surface of the side wall being cylindrical, a cup-shaped intermediate member of fibrous material arranged within and su ported by said outer member to project su stantially therefrom, the side wall of said intermediate member being tapered to a feather edge, the pro ecting portion thereof being substantially cylindrical, a cushioning disk arranged within said intermediate member, a cup-shaped inner member of resilient metal having outwardly inclined walls projecting beyond the edge of the intermediate member and terminating in a feather edge, the walls of said inner member being normally supported out of contact with said intermediate member by said cushioning disk, said cushioning member however permitting the inner memher to engage the side wall of the intermediate member under pressure.
3. A plunger comprising a body member, a supporting disk of fibrous material arranged on the end of said body member, a cup-shaped outer member of resilient metal arranged on said supporting disk, the side Walls of said outer packing member being tapered to a feather edge, a cup-shaped intermediate member of fibrous material arranged within and supported by said outer member to project substantially therefrom, a cushioning disk arranged within said intermediate member, a cup-shaped inner member of resilient metal having outwardly inclined Walls projecting beyond the edge of the intermediate member and terminating in a feather edge, a stud on said body member disposed centrally through said disk and plunger members, and a nut on said stud clamping said parts together.
4. A plunger comprising a cup-shaped outer member of resilient metal having side walls tapered to a feather edge, a cup-shaped intermediate member of fibrous material arranged Within and supported by said outer member to project substantially therefrom, a cushioning disk arranged within said intermediate member, and a cup-shaped inner member of resilient metal having outwardly inclined walls projecting beyond the edge of the intermediate member and terminating in a feather edge.
5. A plunger comprising a body member,
" a supporting disk of fibrous material armeaeoa ranged on the end thereof, a cup-shapedshaped flaring inner member of resilient metal arranged on said cushioning disk to project from said intermediate member and normally out of contact with the side wall thereof and terminating in a feather edge, a stud on said body member disposed through said several plunger members, and a clamping nut on said stud.
6. A plunger comprising a supporting disk of fibrous material arranged on the end thereof, a cup-shaped outer member of resilient metal, the side wall of which is tapered to a feather edge, a substantial portion of the outer surface of the side wall being cylindrical, a cup-shaped intermediate member of fibrous material arranged within and supported by said outer member and projecting substantially therefrom, the side wall of said intermediate member being beveled on its inner side to a feather edge, the outer side of the side wall havin a cylindrical portion of substantial width, a cushioning disk arranged within said intermediate member, and a cup-shaped flaring inner member of resilient metal arranged on said cushioning disk to project from said intermediate member and normally out of contact with the side wall thereof and terminating in a feather edge.
7. A plunger comprising a body member, a supporting disk of fibrous material arranged on the end thereof, a cup-shaped outer member of resilient metal, the side wall of which is tapered to a feather edge, a cup-shaped intermediate member of fibrous material arranged Within and supported by said outer member and projecting substantially therefrom, a cushioning disk arranged within said intermediate member, a cup-shaped flaring inner member of resilient metal arranged on said cushioning disk to project from said intermediate member and normally out of contact with the side ported b said outer member and projec substantlally therefrom, a cushioning dis arranged within said intermediate 'member and a cuphapcd flaring inner member resilient metal. arranged on said cushioning disk to roject from said intermediate member and normally out of contact with the side wall thereof.
