Description
UNITEDl STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH KAYSER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,228, dated April 18, 1876; application iiled February 2R, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH KAYsER,'of the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Paper Box, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a top view, and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical longitudinal and transv'erse sections, rcspectively, on -the lines O O, Fig. 1, andas Fig. 2, of my improved paper box.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved box for candies, collars, and other purposes, which produces, by the opening and closing ot' the drawer,a change ot' pictures on the top part of the box so as to form thereby a neat and e'ective device for centennial and other purposes. f
The invention consists of a paper box whose top part is made of lateral strips, in connection with a series of strips, which are placed between the saine, and moved past them, forward and backward, by a slide piece, actuated by the opening and closing of the drawer of the box.
In the drawing, A represents a paper box of any size or shape, made with a sliding drawer, B. The top part ot' the box A is a1'- ranged with lateral strips C, that are secured at the ends to the top part, and printed to represent a picture, national emblems, or colors, or any other appropriate device. A second series of lateral strips, C', is placed intermediately between the top strips, and carried forward so as to cover the same, or backward so as to be covered by the top strips by means of a central slide piece, D, to which the lower strips are attached. The slide piece D is provided with end flanges, shoulders, or ribs a, that come in contact with the rear wall of the drawer of the box when the same is opened or closed, so as to produce thereby the forward and backward motion of the drawer strips. The lower strips are-printed with a picture or colors dili'erent from that of the top strip, and expose, by the opening of the box the lower strips to view, and by the closing of the box, the exhibition ot' the top strips and picture. This automaticy changing of the pictures by the opening and closing ofthe box, admits an infinite variety ot' surprising effects, and forms thereby a neat box that is adapted for application in various trades, and also for packing up articles for centennial purposes.
` H :win g thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A toy boX made of paper, or other material, provided with adrawer, and having at its upper part two sets of transverse strips, O C', the first being stationary and thelatter movable, and arranged to slide backward and forward and in between and over the stationary set by the opening and closing of the box-drawer, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
JOSEPH xAYsER.
