STRAIGHTEDGE AND REENFORCING DEVICE FiledMarch 18, 1929 Patented June V10, 193) Unirse, erases' aosnrn zannaon nner Boeren, ranssaonusnrrs s'rnnrenfrnnen nun nnnnnonoins nnvron Application filed March 18,1%91.' Serial No. 348,002.
The present invention relates to improvements in reenforcing elements for plastered walls and ceilings. f
One of the important objects of the present invention is to' provide reenforcing units for attachment across the outer faces of the laths, said reenforcing elements being formed with forwardly extending` walls, the outer edges of which provide guides in order that the plaster or cement may be applied to the laths to form a wall of uniform thiclrness.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a reenforcing device cf the above-mentioned character Vwherein the same is provided with openings in the forwardly extending wall or rib through which the plastcror cement passes when applied to the laths, so that said device will yact asa lrey for the plaster to prevent the same from cracking or falling.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-mentioned character that willat all times be positive and efficient in carrying out the puroses for which it is designed the same being further simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages of the in-rk vention will become apparent from thefollowing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the accompanying drawing Ywherein like reference characters indicate VCorresponding parts throughout the same:
Figure l is an elevationalview of a wall that is partially plastered,` showing my improved straight edge deviceattached to the outer faces of the lathe. Y
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken approximately onk the line 22 of Figure 'l and drawn on anl enlarged scale; and
Figure 3' is a fragmentary rvdetail perspective view of the straight Vedge device per se. In` the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown thepreferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral l designates generally the parallel, yspaced studdings that are commonly provided in the ordinary building structure to fo-rmthe Vthese flanges are bentk laterally over the free vcement kthat'is to be applied to the laths.
walls, Nailed across the spaced studdings in- ,Y the usual manner are thewooden laths 2. My reenforcing device isshowngenerally at 3 inFigure 3 and the same is formed from a strip of sheet metal that is bent back l0{ngi-' 55 tudinally-uponitself `to form the abutting:`
vwallsbl and 5.
Those abutting wallsv are further formed with the vertically ,spaced alined, elliptical-r shaped openings 6, lthe purpose ofy which will be presently described. I.VVhile' I have" shown and described theseopenings asl being preferably of elliptical shape, it is to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the particular shape of theseo'pen-,M
V4 Y v b4 The'free edge portion of the Walle is bentY laterally as indicated at 7 and this laterally disposed portion A is formed at spacedgintervals along its lengthwith the transverse slits whereby` to provide a plural-L i ity of attaching flanges Ydenoted-by the refn erence character 8. vThe alternate ones:y of` edge of V`thel walls so that' the attaching 5 flangesare arranged in.` staggered relation on opposite sides ofthe `abutting wallsand 1 each flangeis formed with an openingllfor receiving any suitable fasteninggmeans that maybe driven into thestuddingl as shownHISOi inFigure 2. f As many of these reenforcing members 3 may be employed asis desired, the samezbe- Ving arranged at spaced'intervals and thev flanges 8 ,eX-tend across `the outer-faces vof ,85 the laths 2; The joined 4forward edges of the walls 4 and 4'p'rcvid'e what I term a straight edge l0`and furthermore constitutesa guide for determiningthe amount of plaster or In Figure'2, there is shown the rough coating A of plaster as appliedfto thelaths, andthe front face of this rough coating lies substantially flush withv the 'straight edge 10 and furthermorey certain amount of the v plaster is keyed in ythe spaced,y openings By removing aboard having'V alstraightedge across the adjacent edges 10,'a coating of uniform thickness will be insured. lA finishingf coat of plaster may thenfbe applied to@ the front face of the rough coating A so as to cover over the edges 'l0 of the reenforc- ED ing members 3 so that said reenforcing members Will be entirely embedded Within the plastic coating.V
` It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that I have provided a. device that functions not only as a means for engaging the thickness of the plaster that is applied to the Wall but also as a reenforcing means for the plaster whereby to prevent cracking and falling of the same.
The simplicity of my device enables the same to be constructed at a ver-y lonl cost and furthermore the same can be attached during the forming of the Walls or ceilings Without any dificulty. i
While I have shown the preferred em- Y bodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims. Obviously, the present device may be used to advantage in the spaces around Window and door openings, and for ground for base boards.
I claim:
l. A reenforcing element for plastered Walls formed from a single strip of metal that is bent back upon itself longitudinally Vto form opposed Walls, and laterally extending flanges at the inner edges of the Walls for securing` the reenforcing element across the front faces of the laths to Which the plaster is applied, the flanges being formed along the inner edge of one Wall, and alternate flanges bent laterally and lirmly over the free edge of the opposite Wall, the joined forward edges of the opposed Walls constituting a-straight edge and gage for obtaining a plastered Wall of uniform thickness.
2. A reenforcing element for plastered Walls formed from asingle strip of metal that is bent back upon itself longitudinally to form opposed Walls, and laterally extending flanges at the inner edges of the Walls for securing the reenforcing element across the front faces of the laths to WhichV the plaster is applied, the flanges being formed y along the inner edge of one Wall, and alternate flanges bent laterally and firmly over the free edge of the opposite Wall, the joined forward edges 'of the opposed walls constitnting a straight edge and gage for obtaining a plastered Wall of uniform thickness, the opposed Walls being formed with spaced -alined elliptical openings to which some of the plaster is disposed tokey the reenforc- Ving member in the plaster.
\ In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
