This invention relates to wallboard and fastening strips for the same, and more especially to improved means for fastening to a wall, gypsum plasterboard or wallboard the sides of which are ordinarily covered with heavy paper or cardboard. The principal object of the invention is to provide wallboard sheets having an edge recess, and means for so fastening such sheets that the joints between the sheets will be substantially smooth and flat without protruding ribs' or other projections which are objectionable and unsightly in appearance, and that the wallboard will not be injured by the fastening means.
Preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of two sheets of gypsum wallboard secured in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged section on the line 2 -2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a'similar sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1';
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of a modified form of fastening strips; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
The invention consists essentially in providing longitudinal slots at the outer corners of ad acent sheets or panels of the wallboard, and preferably then inserting. a fastening strip or strips over said slots and nailing said strips to the wall or other support.
'- In the illustrations the wallboard may consist of the usual gypsum plaster 6 and the top improved fastening strips,the gypsum plaster is cut away at the edge of the sheet immediately beneath the top strip 7 providing adj acent slots 9 and 10 at the meeting edges of adjacent sheets or panels.
4 In Figs. 1 to 3, the fastening means comprise a pair of similarly L-shaped metal strips 11 and 12, which are inserted between the sheets of wallboard so that the inner edge of each flanged strip extends almost to the wall 13, While the shorter outer flanges meet the cardboard sheets over the slots or recesses 9 and 10, respectively. These strips are fastened to the wall by nails 14 driven between the adjacent strips. It willbe noted that when the nails are driven suficiently to secure these strips the said inner edges abut the wall, as at 15 and 16, so that -excessive hammerin will not damage the wallboard. The outer anged ends and nail heads will, however, be disposed below the plane of the outer surface of sheets' 7, thereby avoiding projections. The space between the strips 11 and 12 and the recesses above the flanges may be filled with hard plaster to provide a smooth finished surface. I
In the optional construction shown in Figs.
. 4: and 5, a single, flat-reinforcing strip 17 is provided to span the space between the adj acent wallboards, the sides of the strip lying upon the cover sheets 7 over the slots 9 and d is particularly advantageous when the wallboard panels are to be nailed upon laths or spaced sheeting.
Although the foregoing description defines two particular forms of this invention, it is obvious that the details of construction of thedevices described may be varied if desirable without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the following claims. The principal and essential feature of the invention is the provision of a recess in the edge of a sheet of wallboard, beneath the usual covering material, and secondarily of '95 means for securing the said edge of the panel to a supportby any desired sort of attachment which, when attached, will not project above the surface of the panel, and which will not damage the wallboard.

Wallboard consistin of a layer of laster and a cover layer sheet materia on one surface and having a lon itudinal slot in an edge of the plaster immedlately beneath the cover layer, whereby the margin of the cover layer may be depressed into said slot by fastening means for securing the wallboard to a support.
