Description

ELLA J. CROSBY.
HAIR. READING MACHINE. N 176 219 Patented Apr'11 18,1876.
WITNESSES MPETERS, FMDTGUWOGRAPNSR. WASHINGTON, D. Q
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE ELLA J. CROSBY, or SAB ULA, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAlR-HEADING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,219, dated April 18, 1876; application filed March 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA J. ORosBY, of Sabula, Jackson county, Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Hair-Heading Machine, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section on line 0 c, Fig. 1, of my improved machine for heading hair.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to a simple and neatly- Working machine for sorting human hair, so that all the hairs run in the same direction with the roots at one end; and the invention consists of a rubber-covered basepiece, in connection with an adjustable asserting-piece, that swings above the base-piece and heads the hair by friction therewith.
In the drawing, A representsthe base part or stand of my hair-heading machine, which has a lateral connecting-piece, A, thatis covered with rubber cloth, buckskin, soft leather, or other suitable material. The base part A is provided with two upright rods, 15, that are screwed into the same, and provided at the upper ends, between adjustable screw-nuts'a and spiral springs 11, with a lateral rod, 0, that slides by eyes on upright rods B, and is readily set to the required height by the adjusting-screws and springs. From the lateral rod 0 is suspended, by pivoted arms D, a swinging piece, D, that is covered in similar manner as the base-piece with rubber cloth or other fabric, and forms, by its rounded or curved under side, contact with the base-piece A, when swung on the top rod from one side to the other. The extent of swinging motion of piece D is defined by stop-pins d at each side of the piece D.
The hair to be sorted is placed on the base-piece, and the swinging piece carried over the same from one side to the other. The root ends of the hair are immediately moved outwardly by the contact of the rubber cloth with the barbs or scales of the hair, and thus separated from those lying in opposite direction, so that the hair is readily sorted and headed by a very simple and easily-operated device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the lateral cross-rod of the swinging piece with the adjusting-springs and set-screw ot' the standards, to produce a
