This invention. relates to a device for use on automobiles, and has'forits primary object the provision of a' casing or holder adapted to besupported in aconvenient position within an automobile or like vehicle, and having suitable 'indicia within the casing which may be readily displayed with a view of discouraging theft by ,apprising those concerned, in-
cluding the purchaser of second hand cars, withcomplete history regarding the particular vehicle.
A salient object of this invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which will be compact in construction, simple in operation, capable of easy assembly and attachment in a convenient position within the automobile, simple in operation, thoroughly practical and efficient in use.
' Other objects and. advantagesof the invention will become apparent during a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein: r
V Figure 1 is an elevation showing my improved device secured to the dash board of an automobile, 1
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevation of my device showing it secured to another convenient part of, and within the automobile, Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the casing and supporting structure,
Figure4 is a detail perspectiveof the web movable within the casing,
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken throughone end of the casing and showing my improved operating means for the device. In the contemplated embodiment of my invention and as herein illustrated, there is provided a rectangular box like casing 5 formed of metal or other strong material, said casing 5 comprising the backplate 6 having a marginal flange 7 extending therearound to provide a peripheral wall for the casing. p The wall? is further provided with a flange 8, while a cover'plate 9 having a transverse opening 10 formed therein is secured to the casing as at 11. Formed within the. casing opposite the opening 10 and the cover plate 9 there isv a transversely extending guide 1929. Serial No. 353,123.
plate 12, the ends of which guide plate are secured to the peripheral wall? in any well known or conventional manner. Journaled within the casing is a pair of spaced rollers or drums 13, and these rollers or drums are disposed one above and the other below the opening 10. The peripheral surface of each of the rollers is notched as at 14 and 15 respectively, while an elongated web 16 is provided at its opposite end with tabs 17, eachof said tabs having openings18 formed therein. v
s As best shown in Figure 3 one of the tabs 17 is disposed within the notch 14; and a suitable fastening element such as a tack 19 is passed through the opening in the tab and embedded within the roller,the webs then being wound about the roller for several times then directed upwardly between the openlng 10 and the guide plate 12 so that the roller-hasbeen described merely by way of eX-,
emplification, since it is understood that there are various 'waysof so securing the roller and web in operative relation. Upon the web 16 there is printed or otherwise fash: ioned information ofinterest and advantage to the occupants of the car, such information being in the form of data regarding .the manufacturer, the car andmotor number, dealers name, and theaddress of the present and subsequent owners, together with the names of the said owners.
Attention is now directed to Figure 5 wherein is illustrated the preferred means of operating the rollers so as to selectively aline' the data onthe web 16 with theopening 10 in the base plate of the casing. I In this con.- nection then it will be seen ithat the rollers 13 are provided at one end with circular gears 20, whileadisk 21 provided on its periphery withteeth 22 is journaled within the casing intermediate the rollers and in operative association therewith to permit the teeth 22 on the disk to engage with theteeth on the re; spective gears for rotating the rollers'wherev n a I through an'open1ng-28 formed wlth n the sented to View through an elongated opening in the base plate.
byitn'e desired data onthe web inay be pre- The preferred manner of associating my improved nformation device to the vehicle is bestshown'm Figures 1 and'Q, and more in detailin Figure 3, It isfto Figured that I now direct attention andtherein'l'have idesignated theinstrument board generallyby the reference character 23.'
The instrument board23 is'pro'vided with,
' an elongated opening 24: andthe assembled caslngis secured to the-rear face ofthe said screws 26. passing instrument board and fixed thereto as'at 25 so that the opening formed in the cover plate is in ,alineinent' with the opening 24c on the instrument boardii I v A suitable frame, preferably formed of metal is s-ecured-to'the' instrument'board and surrounds the opening formed there1n,' wlnle a transparent panel, Jrefer'ably rormea'of responding "openings in alinenient' with said frameiopeninga disk rotatable within the casin'gfland provided I'with teeth on the pe-' riphery thereot' 'in'meshwiththegearsfon eachbf.saiddrums:for rotating the drums, saiddisk extendingthrough the opening in V theirameand the alined openingsin thein- 'I strument board and casing to'expose -.a por tion thereof for'operativeengagement.
In test-imon glass, and designatedby the numeral 25 is;

thereto in a well known manner;
From. the foregoing then 1t willibe seen thatlphave provided. a, novel means of sup- Z rplying'the occupants of an automobile witli information and data relative to the particu l'ar vehicle, and whereby'those concerned may; readily acquaint themselves with such information as regards' the'manufacture of the car, the numberoffthecar,and'the 'motor, and oth-er such information wh clr'may be; of' n';
terest'to the reader. r p 'fWhile I, have herein shown [and described il t u tural features and'iadvantages'1 of my invention, it is to be understood that certainchan-ges mayfbelmad'e therein,'without departing fro'inithe spirit of the'invention as 7.
