When garments such as ladies light silk dresses and such like are carried on the ordinary garment hanger and. when such garments are being displayed and moved-about, it iscustomary to grasp'the end ofthe archshaped. member through the shoulders of the garment, with the result that after very little handling the garment becomes soiled and damaged. The provision of the upper crossbar in accordance with the present invention provides a very convenient handle by means of which the hanger and garment may be conveniently handled without danger of soiling the garment in any way, and the provision of the flexible covering protects the garment from dust and at the same time insures that the'upper cross bar will be used as a handle, since the covering conceals-the upper part of the garment and itssupport from view.

The hanger illustrated at Figs. 1 and 2 comprises an arch-shaped shoulder-supporting member 10, a vertical piece 11 and an upper cross-bar 12, all connected together by means of a stout wire 13 which is passed through holes in the said members, is clinched over y at its lower end at 14, and is shaped at its upper part to provide a hook 15. The member 10 may be covered with a knitted or other covering 16 of any suitable or well known form, as indicated at Fig. 1.
The flexible cover shown at Fig. 2 consists of a single piece of fabric 17 folded in two and perforated at 18 so as to pass over the hook 15 and stitched at 19 so as to'fit smoothly over theends of the upper cross-bar 12. The cover 17 may be made of any suitable length so as to cover only the upper part of the garmerit or to completely cover the same.
The garment hanger shown at Fig. 3 is made from sheet metal stamped out to the de- 90 sired shape to form a hook 20, an upper-crossbar 21, a vertical connecting part 22, an archshaped shoulder-supporting member 23, and a lower cross-bar 24 for supporting folded garments, andthe parts 24, 23 and 21 are bent over or flanged so as to provide upper rounded surfaces for engagement with the garments and with the cover, and'to provide a suitable grip in the case of the member 21.

What I claim is:
A garment hanger of the character described comprising a hook, an arch-shaped member for receiving the shoulder part of p the garment, a rigidly attached crossbar between said hook and said member, and a flexible open-ended cover carried by said cross-bar to conceal the upper part of the garment, the side and the lower edges of said name to this specification.
