This invention refers to a compressing device, and especially to a cigarette bunch compressing device, in which the bunch is fed to be wrapped in a wrapping machine, of an approved construction, and the invention has for its main object, the provision of a mechanism of this kind, by which is attained the shaping of the bunch of cigarettes prior to the wrapping of same, so that the cigarettes in a cigarette bunch of two or more layers of cigarettes do not remain loose and resting one upon another, thereby causing disturbance or trouble in the operation of the wrapping machine, but on the contrary, the cigaf rettes of each layer being grouped together,
and all the cigarettes of each layer, being on the same horizontal plane.
More objects and advantages relating to this invention, will be set forth in the course of these specifications with the aid of the gures in the attached drawings.

In the drawing 1 designates a frame work on which is set spacedly and transversal to said framework two standards 2, having slots 2 in their bases, and a projecting ear 2 to provide for fixing said supports in spaced relation to cach other, by means of screws fitted through the slots 2 and also the screws 1, screwed horizontally in standards 5 secured to the framework 1.
The standards 2 have upper in sloped divergent portions, which present long sloped slots 6, said portions passing through a slot 7, formed in the middle of two plates 7, which are fastened to horizontal flanges of U shaped standards, by means of screws 9, and said standard being in turn fastened to 1928. the upper end of a vertical rod 10, suitably mounted through the framework 1, and which rod receives a vertical reciprocal movement from a suitable gearing which is not shown, the inner edges of each plate 7, are spaced apart to leave between them a passageway 11. Upon each plate 7 are fastened the blocks 12, on the upper surfaces of which are formed the guideways 12', said blocks being covered by a plate 13, fastened to same by means of screws 13', and said cover having slots 13, registering with the slots 7 to provide a passage for the upper parts of the standards 2. Through the guide l2 of each plate 7 is arranged slidably a plate 1&1, which has in its middle portion a slot 14, for the passage of the corresponding standard 2, having mounted through the saine. and fastened at the side of the slot 1/1, a short horizontal shaft 15, provided with a loose roller 16.
The front end of each plate 14 is pivoted Vat 17 to a hinged compressing plate 18, held in a substantially normal plane to the bottom of each plate 7, having near the end an ear 18, to which is pivoted a horizontal rod 19, mounted through the ears 12 embodied with the corresponding side of each block 12, and said rod being forced forwardly by the stress of a coil spring 20 on same, and held by a collar 21, and one of the ears 12", the rod 19 being held by a nut and counter nut 22. By 23 is shown stops destined to check the rearward movement of the plates 18. y
The working of this mechanism is as eziplained in the following:
Assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Figure 2, that is when the rod 10 has finished its movement upwardly, thel plates 18 will be in the divergent position shown in Figure 1, due to the expansion of the springs 20, until engaged with the stops 23.
When the cigarettes B are pushed by the cigarette plunger, they will be placed between the plates 18 in the loose form shown in Figure 5, but they will be pressed by the plates 18 on their front ends, making them adopt the position shown in Figure 6.
In the downward movement of the rod 10, the roller 16, will slide through the slots 6 the plates 14 moving forwardly, against the tension of the spring 20, and the compressing lates then being in the positi-on shown in *igure 8 and forcing thereby the cigarettes of the bunch to become grouped the one against the other by a soft lateral pressure, thereby shaping the package, as shown in Figure 7. The rod of the pushing plunger of the 1 package of cigarettes passes through the 10 opening ll as shown inthe above mentioned ligure remaining stationary in its plane, and on inishing its following movement upward the rod 10 passes again through the passage ll, occupying the position which is shown in Figure 2. Claim: In a machine of the class described, a base, standards spaced with regard to each other and mounted upon said base, means for adjusting the standards with respect to each other, a third standard upon the base, plates having their relatively adjacent ends supported upon the last mentioned standard and spaced with respect to each other, means for imparting vertical movement to the last mentioned standard, plates supported above the first mentioned plates and in spaced opposed relation to each other and between which articles to be packed and wrapped are to be inserted in a bunch, members mounted upon the first mentioned plates and slidably adjustable thereon, coacting means upon the said members and the standards for eiiectinor such adjustment thereof in the upward anc downward movement of the last mentioned standard, the said plates which are in spaced opposed relation being supported by the said members and means yieldably holding the plates in relatively diverging planes whereby when a bunch of articles is inserted between the more widely spaced sides of the plates and is moved between the plates, the urging of the plates to parallel position, by the inserted bunch, will eiect compression of the articles to compact, mutually contacting form.
