MARINE FOUNDATION AND METHOD FOR MAKING THE SAME Filed Dec. 20, 1927 A TTORNE YJ 4Patented May 13, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JACOB :rAcoBsoF corLEY, oHIo Application filed December 20, 1927. Serial No. 241,329.
This invention relates to marine foundations and methods for making the same.` The general purpose of the invention is to provide a marine foundation capable of use 5 in waters of considerable depth and to provide improved procedure whereby marine foundations may be successfully constructed in bodies of water of great depth.
Particularly the invention has for its ob- 10 ject the provision of a hollow perforated column of concrete or other suitable material for remaining submerged, one or more of which can be employed to fixedly support a structure in bodies of water so as to be able to withstand th.,A action of storms, ice or the like.
A further object is to provide a method for making and sinking said columns in any depth of water.
The foregoing and other objects are obtained by the construction and method illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described below. It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular form thereof shown and described.
Of the accompanying drawings,
.Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, illustrating the improved procedure for sinking a column embodying the invention in a body of water;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the form employed for making the improved column; and
Figure 3 is a detail section, partly broken away, illustrating the manner of securing the inner and outer form parts together and forming the perforations in the hollow column.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a hollow or tubular, reinforced concrete column preferably having perforations at 11, 1l therein whereby, when sinking the column in a body of water and as it becomes embedded in the bottom thereof, the water will flow so as to equalize the pressure on its walls.
In making the column, a form including exterior shell 12 and interior shell 13 is elnployed, these being connected together by bolts 145` 14 extended through spacer sleeves a I5, 15 which also form the perforations 1l.
The column 10, as it is being made, is supported by derricks, cranes or other tackle, 16,
. 16, which may be carried on an annular float 17 or by suitable work-boats and are connected with the column adjacent the surface of the water as shown.
The column l0 is progressively formed of concrete or the like` reinforcing rods 10, 10n being insertedtherein in the usual way and as each section sets sufiiciently on a. lower section, it is lowered into the water, the forms, if desired, being removed and used for building a succeeding section on top of the finished sections, this process being continued until the column reaches and settles in the bottom.
It will appear from the foregoing that a simple, effective marine foundation has been provided and also an improved procedure for sinking the same. It will be understood that the foundation disclosed herein is adapted for effective use,-not only in open bodies of water, but also for foundations on land which extend down into swampy land, quick-sands, and similar earth, water from such earth flowing into the tubular column and equalizin pressure on the walls thereof.
Vhat is claimed is v That method of making a marine foundation which comprises progressively building. a tubular column of concrete with the use of inner and outer form members having tubular spacer therebetween to form perforations in the column, and progressively lowering the column as it is built while supporting the column with connections extending into the perforations thereof adjacent the surface until the column reaches and settles in the bottom. the perforations serving to permit flow of water into the column to the same level as` the surface.
