HOMER WRIGHT, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA. I
IMPROVEMENT IN MOLASSES-JUGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175.8 1 l dated April 4, 1876; application filed February 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HOMER WRIGHT, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinged Lids for MolassesJugs and similar articles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view, partly in section, of my improved molasses jug top. Fig. 2 is a modification of the same. Fig. 3 shows the mode of operating my improvement.
Like letters refer to like parts wherever they occur.
My invention relates to the construction of hinged lids for molassesju gs, pitchers, covered mugs, and similar ware, &c. The common manner of operating the lids of molasses-jugs and like ware has been by means of a thumbpiece or similar projection cast on or secured to the lid, so that, when in use, the lid was forced back upon the hand of the user or against the handle of the jug, bringing a direct strain on the hinge; and if the lid was suddenly released it fell with a disagreeable clatter, and was in course of time liable to become battered and defaced.
I'will now proceed to describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art towhich it appertains may apply the same.
In the drawing, A indicates a jug-top, the lid B of which is provided with a lug or projection, b, at or near the hinge. O isa lever pivoted as at c, or at other suitable point on the jug, the short arm 0 working against the lug b of the lid, and the long arm extending down to (as shown in Fig. 2, the modified form) or forming the handle by which the jug or similar article is lifted. Upon the short arm 0 of the lever is a lug or projection, e, which limits the movement of the lever and prevents the lid from being raised too far, said lug or stop varying in length according to the distance. through which the short arm of the lever is to move, and it may be omitted entirely, or an equivalent device employed.
6 is a second lug, or an extension of the short arm of the lever, which checks and limits the backward movement of the lid, so that any impetus the lid may acquire by the sudden application of the lifting-lever is neutralized.
In glass jugs or articles having no handles I form the short arm of the lever as shown in Fig. 1, i. 6., with a ring, f, for the reception of the finger, and a lug or stop, g, which regulates the position of the long arm of the lever when not in use, thus causing the single device to perform both the functions of a handle in lifting the jug and a lever for lifting and controlling the lid. Where the art-icle is [)lOVldBd with a glass or similar handle,
the long arm of the lever may be made to extend eilher above or below said handle, as preferred, (see Fig. 2,) and in line therewith.
The advantages of operating the lid by a pivoted lever are, that the lid is readily raised, lowered, and controlled, and is not defaced by hanging, or soiled by the hand of the user. The advantage of combining handle and lever in one is that jugs of cheaper manufacture may be used, and the weight of the jugis made auxiliary to the lifting of the lid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the hinged lid and the pivoted lever, having the arm f adapted to form a handle to the jug, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the hinged lid and the pivoted lever, provided with a lug or stop, a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the hinged lid and the pivoted lever, provided with the lugs or stops 6 and c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
1n testimony whereof, I, the said HOMER. WRIGHT, have hereunto set my hand.
HOMER WRIGHT.
