Description

J. B. GALBRAITH 1,757,457 CENTERING AND ALIGNING DEVICE May 6, 1930.
Filed Aug. 25, 192.7
Patented May 6, 1930 JOSEPH B. GALBRAITH, F KAYSVILLE, UTAH CENTERING AND ALIGNING DEVICE Application filed August 23, 1927. Serial No. 214,832.
My invention relates to centering and align ing devices, and has for its object to provide a new centering device for use with lathes, pipe working machines, or wherever a long piece of round metal or wood is being turned, and it is desired to keep the piece centered so as to prevent vibration and end movement thereof.
These objects I accomplish with the device 1 illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which similar numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as described in the specification forming a part of this application and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, in which I have shown the best and most preferred manner of building my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Figure 2 is an end view of the same. Figure 3 is a plan view. of the tilting frame.
In the drawings I have shown a supporting frame as A secured to a member B which is attached to the machine on which the device is being used, and the frame A is braced to the member B by the brace rod 1. A tilting frame D is then provided, having cross beams 2 and 3 thereacross, which beams are spaced apart and carry stub shafts 4i and 5 therebetween, said shafts carrying rollers 6 and 7.
A support rod 8 is provided vertically on the said frame A and the top end thereof is placed against the bottom side of the cross beam 3 of the frame D to support the frame D on the frame A. A pin is placed through the said rod under the member B to prevent excess movement thereof. A pivot pin 9 is passed through the said frame D from side to side and carries a roller 10 thereon between the sides of the frame D. Connecting links 11 and 12 are carried on the said pin on both sides of the frame D and have another cross bolt 13 below the member B from one to the other with a roller 14 carried thereon. A U- bolt 15 is passed through the member B and over the roller 10 and holds the entire assembly from end movement on the said member. A handle 17 is provided to control the movement of the frame D. A U-shaped bolt 16 is 0 made and secured to the frame D near the pipe it is resting with its bottom side on themtwo rollers and its top side held down by the U-shaped bolt 16, and as it rotates it is held rigid in the central position as desired. The weight of the machine and the member B on the roller 14 holds it down and pulls the U- bolt 16 down upon the pipe, holding it rotatable but fixed in relation to the machine to which the device is attached.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. In a centering device of the class described, the combination of a supporting frame consisting of an upright frame and a horizontal member secured to the machine on which the device is to be used; a pivoted frame secured pivotally to said horizontal member, having two spaced apart cross members thereon near one end thereof and between which two spaced apart rollers are rotatably carried on suitable bearings; rollers provided 0n the pivot pins on which said pivoted frame is carried; and a U-shaped member secured through the other end of said pivoted frame to engage over the top side of the material to be centered.
2. In a centering device, the combination of a supporting frame and a horizontal memher; a tilting frame pivoted to said cross member having spaced apart rollers thereon adapted to support the material to be centered L and a Ushaped member on said tilting frame adapted to engage over the top side of the material to be held and to hold it in central alignment with the center of the two rollers q substantially as described.
3. In a centering device, the combination of a supporting frame consisting of a vertical member and a horizontal member; a rod attached to the vertical member and upon which 1 said horizontal member is supported; a tilt:
ing frame pivoted to said horizontal member; rollers carried therein; and a retaining member secured to said tilting frame adapted to hold material down to said rollers.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
JOSEPH B. GALBRAITH.
