This invention relates to printing devices having aprinting form and which are adapted to be stored in accordance with a card indeX system or in a stack and to be run through an addressing or other suitable machine for taking impressions from the form.

The object of the invention is to provide a novel tab or card holder which is adapted to be slidably engaged with the printing device at the top thereof so that it can be easily adjusted between the ends ofthe device and used for indexing or classifying purposes.

The invention is capable of use with many different kinds of printing devices and, for the purpose of this application, l have shown it applied to a printing device of that class which comprises a frame carrying a detachable plate and a detachable card and, referring to-the drawings Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a printing device with my improved tab applied thereto.

The printing device illustrated comprises a frame `5, a printing plate 6 and a card 7, the frame having suitable retaining devices for detachably holding the plate and the card thereon. The plate has printing characters embossed thereon. The upper edge of the frame is provided with a bead 8.

The tab shown is made in the form of aholder comprising a plate 9, having a flange 10 at the top and flanges 11 at the ends to receive a card 12 bearing indexing or classifying data. Two legs 13 project downwardly from the lower edge of the plate 9 and adjacent the plate these legs are bent forward to form forwardly projecting portions 141-. Each leg is bent reversely upon `itself below said portions 14: to form a recess 15 to receive the edge of the bead 8 and a rib 16 to fit in the bead. Vfhen the tab is applied to the frame the legs will interlockingly engage the bead at the top edge of the frame and the shoulders at the under side of the bent portions le of the legs will engage the top portion of the bead and the tab is thus held against displacement on the frame except that it is capable of being slidabiy adjusted on the bead between the ends of the frame. The upper sides of bent portions 14 also form shouldersto support the card 12 which rests thereon and is held in place by the flanges lil-11. lThe tab may be readily engaged with the frame by an endwise movement of the tab relative to the frameto interengage the bead and the reversely bent portions of the legs, and the tab can be readily disengaged from the frame by moving the tab endwise relative to the frame. rlhe tab is preferably made of light spring-metal which will permit it to be shaped'for snug engagement with the frame and to yield sufficiently for ready engagement with and disengagement from the frame. l have shown the tab adapted to receive a removable card 12, but it is apparent that the card may be affixed to the tab, or the indexing or classifying data may be printed or otherwise applied directly upon the tab in ways familiar with tabs heretofore used in connection with printing devices olthe kind to which my invention is adapta e.

The legs extend below the bent portions and lie flat against the frame behind the card 7. There is sufiicient frictional contact between the tab and the frame to hold the tab in adjusted position. The retaining devices 17 may be of the usual form strucl'r up from the frame as shown to hold the card 7 on the frame, but 4provision may be made to permit the card 7 to project up into the ribs 16 between the folds of the legs forming said ribs so that the legs will also function as retaining devices for the card.

Thetab is simple in construction and it is adapted to be easily applied to a frame and to be adjusted between the ends of the frame to any desired position for indexing or classifying' purposes. This tab may be used alone or in conjunction with other tabs usually applied to printing devices, and it may be made in any desired size or shape to meet different conditions.

' I am aware that changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts may be made to adapt the tab for different printing devices and'for different purposes, and I reserve the right to make all such changes as fall within the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

LA tab for printing devices, comprising a plate adapted to be positioned above the edge of the printing device and in substantially the plane thereof, and an integral leg projecting downwardly from the plate along the face of the printing device, said leg being bent adjacent the plate to form a shoulder, and a rib 'with a recess therebetween for engagement with a printing device.

2. A tab for printing devices comprising a plate and a leg7 said leg being bent to forni a shoulder at the front thereof and adjacent the lower edge of the plate, and a rib back of said shoulder with a recess between the shoulder and the rib topermit engagement of the tab' V.with a printing device.

3. Atab for printing devices comprising a plate having devices thereon for retaining a card, and a leg projecting downward from the plate, said leg being bent adjacent the plate to form a shoulder to receive the lower edge of the card, and said leg being also bent adjacent said shoulder to form a rib with arecess therebetween to permit engagement of the tab with a printing device.

4. Thefcombination of a printing device having an integral recessed bead at one edge, andv a tab comprising an elongated leg eX- tending downwardly over the face of the printing device and bent intermediately to slidably interengage with said bead.

5. The `combination of a printing device having a recessed bead at its upper edge, and a tab comprising a plate and a leg, said leg being bent to form a rib to engage the recess in the bead and a shoulder spaced from the ribto forma recess for receiving the edge of the bead.

6. The combination of a printing device having a bead at one edge, and a tab comprising agcardholding plate and a leg, said leg being bent to form an upper shoulder for supporting the card on said plate at the front of the plate, a lower shoulder, and a rib,

said rib being spaced from the lower shoulder ythe plate, said leg being bent to form an upper shoulder at the front thereof and adjacent the plate to support the card, a lower shoulder and said leg being also bent to form to interlockingly engage the bead for slidably mounting the tab on the frame.
