To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection land arrangement of parts hereinafter moreV fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In said drawings, 10 designates a valve casing comprising a hollow body ortion 11 df substantially cylindrical form aving an inlet portion 12, and an outlet ortion 13 extending radially from said ody portion. The outlet ortion 13 is provided upon its outer end witha hexa onal part 14, and with internal screw threa s 15. The lnlet portion 13 is provided on its outer side with an enlarged end having external screw threads 16. 17 denotes the valve proper or plug which is preferably of slightly tapering form and revolubly disposed within the body portion or valve casing 10, and is provided with a main outlet passage 18 correspondin in diameter to and ada ted t0 register witg thepassages 122.13 o the outlet and inlet portlons 12, 13, respectively of the valve cas- 1ng, and a similar mlet passage 19, arranged at right angles to and communicating at its inner end with the inner end of the main outlet passage 18. The outer end of said as 'sage 19 is also adapted to be brought into register with the passage 13* of the outlet 13. Diametrically opposite to the assage 19, the valve lug 17 is provided wit a circular recess 1 from the base of which extends'a secondary outlet passage 18, of smaller diameter than the recess 17", communicating with theinner end of the outlet passage 18.
The forward end of the valve or plug 17 is provided with a spherical head 22 having a shallow socket 24 at its exposed end whose base is arranged at an an le of about twentylive degrees (25) to the ongitudinal axis of the plug. The socket 24 is adapted to receive the reduced end of a handle 25K. Y From the central part .of said socket extends a small screw-threaded a erture 26 adapted to engage with the threade intermediate portion 27 of a. screw 28 which extends longitudinally through'V the handle 25, and serves to secure said4 handle to the valve or plug 17.
`vThe extreme end 29 of the screw 28 is reduced in diameter and pointed, and projects downwardly from and out of the rear end of the head 22 of the valve 17. The projecting end 29 of said screw serves also as a pointer and works over an annular index or dial plate 30 secured by screws orpins 31extendin `through said plate 30 at o posite sides thereo into ears 32 extending ra 'ally from the outer sides of the valve casing 11 at its forward end.
The index or dial plate 30 is provided at suitable points upon its inner edge with upwardly extendin ears or projections 33 which are preferably ormed integrall withsaid plate and serve as sto s adapte to engage with the, projecting en 29 or pointer o t e screw 28 lwhereby to limit the rota movemen of the valve or plug 17in either direction, and to cause the several passages therein to register accurately with t e passages in inlet and outlet portions 12, 13 of the valve.
The inlet portion 12 is provided with alateral extension 35 having a small threaded opening 36 therein opening into a larger threaded recessed portion. 38 denotes a stem having an enlarged threaded intermediate part 39 engagingthe threaded opening 36. The outer end of said stem 38 is provided with a slot 40 to receive the end of a tool for actuating said having a polygonal head 42. The threaded part 42 of said cap is adapted to engage with the threaded recessed portion 37, and the inner end of said threaded part is adapted to bear upon a washer 43 to form a tight seal between the inner portion of said extension 35 and said cap 41. The recess 44 in the under side of said'cap 41 is of such depth as will permit of the outer slotted end of the stem 38 being completely retracted so as to leave the passage 12* unrestricted in area for the passage of gas. By adjusting the stem 38'so that its inner end may extend to a greater or less extent into the passage 12', the area of stem. 41 denotes a screw cap Said passage 12a may be varied to regulate or control the rate of flow of the gas through the passage and at the same time the pressure on theoutlet side of the valve will be reduced to meet any given operating requirements or conditions.
When "the apparatus employing a gas burner or burners to heat thesame is not 1n operation, the supply of as will be com letely shut. off by turning the andle 25 to t ie left, and until the projecting end or pointer 29 of the screw 28 engages with the right-hand stop 33 on the index or dial late 30 adjacent to the word Ofi When the handle 25 is adjusted to this position, the solid portion of the valve or plug 17 will close the outlet passage 12* of the valve casing. Y
If it is nowvdesired to operate the apparatus, and supply gas to the burner, it merely becomes necessary to turn the handle 25 tothe right.' When the handle reaches a vertical gesition the pointer 29 will register with the ial indication 34 aociated with the'word Pilotr whereupon gas will pass through the reduced or secondary passage 18 communieating with the main outlet passage 18 and to the outlet 13* of the.valve casing, and thus permit a limited but uninterrupted amount of gas to pass to the burner. Whenthe full supply of gas for operating the main burner is required, the movement of the handle 25 is continued to the right, and until the pointer 29 contacts with the left-hand stop 33 associated with the word On, whereupon the full A the inlet passage 12* to the burner' through the inlet passage 19 and main outlet passage 18 to the outlet passages 13, 13* of the casing.
In operating the valve to admit the full supply of gas tothe burner, itis important to prevent a large amount of gas suddenly entering the burner and assing into and filling the combustion cham er of the apparatus as .this would be very likely to cause an explosion when the gas is ignited. To prevent such result only a'small amount of gas is permitted to reach the burner before the full sup ly becomes available. This is accomplis ed by providin the valve or plug 17 with the recess 17* W ich communicates with the reduced secondary outlet passage 18 communicating with the main outlet passage 18. Thus, when the valve or plug 17 is turned to the left, (the handle to the right), a small initialamount of gas is permitted to pass from the inlet passage 12, through the recess 17 and into the outlet passage 13*, and as the movement of the valve plug 17 is-continued and the recess 17* brought into register with the `-outlet passage 13* the open end of the assa e 18 in the valve or plug 17 will be roug t simultaneously into register with the inlet passage 12 of the valve casing and gas be permitted to pass to the outlet 13* by way of the reduced secondary outlet passage 18,

In a valve the combination of a stem having a socket at its exposed end, and a threaded opening extending from the base of said socket, with a handle having one end disposed Within said socket, a member extending longitudinally through said handle, and a threaded portion on said member engaging the threaded opening in said stem; the rear end of said member projecting out of said stem and serving asa pointer, substantially as specified. A valve of the character described comprising a casing having an inlet and an outlet, a valve revolubly disposed in said casing, means for actuating said valve, a pointer carried by said valve, an annular dial plate secured upon said casing and surrounding said valve, and means projecting from the inner edge of said dial plate for engagement with said pointer for limiting the movement 'of said valve, substantially as specied.
