This invention pertains to double gas range cocks used for controlling gas to gas range burners having twosections and two mixing tubes.
This invention consists of an advantageous arrangement of the parts of said cockand particularly of the gas outlets thereon, and the means indicating when gas flow to one of said outlets is entirely shut off. The indicating means herein shown for convenience, is the same as disclosed in my Patent No. 1,707,007 issued March 26, 1929.
' The object of this invention is to provide a more compact arrangement of parts of said cock, to provide greater accessibility of said parts, to
remove parts in said indicating means farther from the action of the heat of the flame, and to provide a smaller and consequently less costly gas range cock of this double type.
These and other objects of this invention will be more apparent from the following description and from the drawing in which- Figure 1 shows a gas cock of the type 'of this invention with the parts separated in related order; 4

Referring now to the drawing, in which like parts are designated by like characters throughout, a gas cock casing 10 is shown with a central plug receiving passage 11 therein, in which is placed a tapered plug 12, said plug being seated therein on a tight and well ground lubricated bearing. Said casing 10 has a threaded projection 13 thereon for connection to a gas manifold (not shown) and said projection has a gasway 14 therein, said gasway extending as 14a through to the other side as shown of said plug receiving passage 11. Said plug has two passages 15 and 16 meeting in the center of said plug and each positioned so as to partially register in one position of said plug, passage 15 with passage 14 and passage 16 with passage 14a. Said passages are drilled at an angle one to the other and in position as shown for purposes hereinafter to be explained. Meeting said passages 15 and 16 and extending transversely of said plug, there is an additional passage 17 terminating with an open end at the lower end of said plug. Returning now to the casing 10, the passage 14a leads into 5 a passage 18 at right angles thereto, said passage 18 continuing into a threaded projection 19 on which is screwed a hood 20, and said hood has a restricted orifice 21 tentrally placed in its outer end. A needle 22 is pressed into the end of the aforesaid threaded projecting end 19, and saidneedle is slabbed so as to provide free gas passages 23 on each side of said slabbed portion.- The end of said needle 22 is arranged to enter the orifice 21 in said hood 20 more or less depending on the distance said him 20 is screwed up on the threaded projection 19, and this combination of threaded projection 19, hood 20, and needle 22 forms an adjustable nozzle as commonly used on gas range cocks. For convenience I have shown this common form of gas cock out- .70 1 let, but any other form of outlet such as a coupling or threaded end might be used.
The casing 10 has a second threaded projection 24 positioned on it in line with the aforesaid plug receiving passage 11, the said projection 24 having a passage 25 connecting with said plug receiving passage as shown. Said projection also has a needle 26 inserted therein, a hood 27 screwed thereon with an orifice 28 therein, all forming an adjustable nozzle similar in construc- 30 tion to the first described nozzle except that the Y orifice 28 is smaller than the orifice 21. Figure 3 shows a section on line 33 of Figure The plug 12 has a stem 29 projecting from its upper extremity, said stem having thereon a stop plate 30 and a spring 31, said spring acting to hold said plug in seated relation, and being compressed by a top nut 32 which encloses the parts mentioned, and is screwed onto the casing at 33. Said plug 12 has a pin 34 pressed therein, said pin acting against stops 35 and 36 in the stop washer 30, so limiting the turning of said plug to substantially 180 degrees. Stop plate 30 is constrained against rotary motion by a key 3'7 on the casing 10, said key projecting into a keyway 38 in stop plate 30. The key 37 has a loose fit in the keyway to permit of a limited and predetermined amount of rotary motion. Said stop plate 30 has a cam surface 39 which is inclined and which bears on the pin 34 as the plug 12 is rotated, and when said pin has rotated from the position shown in Figure 1 to the top at 40 of said inclined cam surface 39, the cam ro-' tates somewhat as permitted by the keying means and, when just past the top point 40, said cam actuated downward by spring 31, rotates quickly in reverse direction which causes a snap action and indicates a position of said plug. The ports 15 and 16 are so drilled in said plug that the passage 16 has just closed over the passage 14a so cutting off passage of gas to the orifice 21 when said snapping action takes place. At this same position the passage 15- is still somewhat in register with passage 14 so allowing gas to still pass to the orifice 28. It can be seen that the pin is stationary as regards motion longitudinal with said plug, and when, therefore, the pin traverses the cam surface 39 from the position shown in Figure l to the high point l0 of the cam surface, the cam 30 lifts or tilts, as it is allowed to do by compressing the spring 31, and consequently the cam 30 has a motion with a component longitudinal as regards the plug, as specified in the claims hereafter.
I have therefore described an arrangement of outlets and indicating means on a double gas cook, where indication is given or" a point in the rotation of the plug where gas is cut ofi from one of the outlets while still flowing to a second outlet, and this invention is in a particular arrangement and advantageous relation of these parts and means. A broad and general disclosure of the purposes of this general type of invention are shown in my Patent No. 1,707,007 issued March 26, 1929, which covers this particular type of snap action.
The beforementioned stem 29 extends through top nut 32 and into a handle 41, said handle being fastened to said stem by the screw &2, and handle e1 serves as a means of turning said plug to its desired operating positions.
One of 'the main advantages of my construction here shown, is that the indicating means comprised in this case of the pin 3%, stop plate 30, and spring 31, with interlocking parts of the remainder of the mechanism, is placed on the stem or handle end of the plug, so leaving the way clear to place a nozzle at the lower end of said plug or leaving this space free for other purposes, or allowing a chamber at this lower end of said plug wherefrom gas passage means may convey the gas to outlet means without enclosing all the parts, or without packing boxes or other disadvantageous construction. While I have shown and described an indicating means as in my Patent No. 1,707,007 itis understood that in this present invention any other indicating means might be employed, the object of which was to disclose to the operator the desired position of the plug or operating member.
As to the operation of this gas cock, the position shown is an ofi position where gas is entirely cut oil from both outlets. With the plug rotated 90 degrees, an open position is given for both outlets since the ports are so arranged that passage 15 registers in large degree with the inlet passage 14, and at the same time passage 16 registers in large degree with passage 14a. Turning the plug back or slightly counterclockwise from this full open position throttles the gas at the inlet passage la and finally cuts it off entirely, while at the'same time, due to the angular drilling of the ports 15 and 16, the port 16'still opens into passage l ia sufficient for free flow of gas from passage 16, and this condition cuts off gas uniformly and gradually to both outlet orifices 28 and 21, which is now known to be desirable for obtaining low uniform or frying heat.
On the other hand, turning the plug clockwise from the 90 degree open position cuts off the gas to the orifice 21, while due also to the angular drilling of the ports 15 and 16, the port 15 is still somewhat open to the inlet passage 14, and at this position the snap or indicating action takes place. While the passage 15 at this point is only in small registry with the passage 14, still it is in sufficient amount for full passage of gas due to the small amount required by the small orifice 28. Rather turning of the plug in clockwise direction lowers the flow of gas to the small orifice 28 and finally cuts oii the gas now entirely. This sequence of operations is as necessary and desirable for a double gas range top burner as disclosed in my Patent No. 1,664,508, issued April 3, 1928.
While I have described more or less precisely the details of construction, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate.changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departing from the spirit or scope or". my invention. For instance, in place of a tapered plug as shown, it should be within the scope of this invention to substitute any other shape of closing member such as a disc or cylinder in bearing with the casing, and to have the casing suitably shaped therefor.
I claim:
1. A gas range cock having a casing with a plug receiving passage therein, an operating plug member in said passage, operating means at one end of said plug member, said casing having two gas outlets thereon, said plug member and said casing having pamages therein leading to each of said outlets, said passages in said plug being arranged so that on operating movement of said plug one of said passages is shut off before another, means in said cock indicating said point of shut off, part of said means having a motion with a component longitudinal with said plug, said means being at least partially located in a plane between said operating means on said plug and said passages through said plug, said plane being perpendicular to the axis or" said plug, said indicating means having a spring, means attached to said casing holding said spring in compressed relation.
2. A gas range cock having a casing with a plug receiving passage therein, an operating plug member in said passage, operating means at one end of said plug member, said casing having two gas outlets thereon, said plug member and said casing having passages therein leading to each of said outlets, said passages in said plug being arranged so that on operating movement of said plug one of said passages is shut ofi before another, means insaid cock indicating said point i of cut off, said indicating means having a cam means, a coil spring, and suitable cam engaging means, said coil spring holding said cam means in bearing with said cam engaging means, said spring being held compressed by means in fixed relation to said casing.
3. A gas range cock having a casing with a plug receiving passage therein, an operating plug member in said passage, operating means at one end of said plug member, said casing having two a gas outlets-thereon, said plug member and said casing having passages therein leading to each of said outlets, said passages in said plug being arranged so that on operating movement of said plug one of said passages is shut off before another, means in said cock indicating said point of cut ofi, said indicating means comprising a coil spring and a cam means, said cam means operating between said plug and said casing and being keyed to one of said parts and having bearing relation in respect to the other, said cam means being held in bearing by means attached to said casing.
4. A gas range cock having a casing with a plug receiving passage therein, an operating plug said outlets, said passages in said plug being ar- I ranged so that on operating movement of said plug one of said passages is shut off before another, means in said cock indicating said point of cut off, said means having a spring, cam means and spring compressing means, all of said three parts assembled over the operating end of said plug, said spring compressing means being attached to said casing.
5. A gas range cock having a casing with a plug receiving passage therein, an operating plug member in said passage, operating means at one end of said plug member, said casing having two gas outlets thereon, said plug member and said casing having passages therein leading to each of said outlets, said passages in said plug being arranged so that on operating movement of said plug one of said passages is shut off before another, means in said cock indicating said point of cut oif, said casing having a top nut means fastened thereto, a spring and a cam means held in assembled relation by said top nut means, said operating end of said plug projecting through said spring, cam means and top nut means.
6. A gas range cock having a casing with a plug receiving passage therein, an operating plug member in said passage, operating means at one end of said plug member, said casing having two gas outlets thereon, said plug member and said casing having passages therein leading to each of said outlets, said passages in said plug being arranged so that on operating movement of said plug one of said passages is shut off before another, means in said cock indicating said point of cut off, said casing having at one end of said plug a chamber with a passage therefrom leading to one of said outlets, said indicating means being located at least in part toward the opposite end of said plug from said chamber, both of said outlets being located on the opposite side from said plug of a plane through the end of said plug and perpendicular to its axis.

A gas range valve having a casing member with a rotary closing member in bearing therewith, an indicating member keyed to one of said members whereby its rotary motion with respect to said member is limited, a handle means in connection with said rotary member whereby said member is rotated, a coil spring located with its axis substantially the same as the axis of said rotary closing member, said spring exerting a force on said indicating member in the axial direction of said rotary member, top means fastened to said casing and holding said spring in compressed relation, at least a portion of said spring, said indicating means and said top means being located between said handle means and the bearing surface of said rotary closing member, said casing member having two gas outlets thereon, said rotary member and said casing member having passages therein leading to each of said outlets-said passages in said means being so arranged that one of said passages is shut off when the other is open in at least one rotary position of said rotary member, stops limiting the rotary.

A gas range valve having a casing member with a rotary closing member in bearing therewith, an indicating member keyed to one of said members whereby its rotary motion with respect to said member is limited, a handle means in connection with said rotary member whereby said member is rotated, a coil spring located with its axis substantially the same as the axis of said ro- 'tary closing member, said spring exerting a force on said indicating member in the axial direction of said rotary member, top means fastened to said casing and holding said spring in compressed relation, at least a portion of said spring, said indicating means and said top means being located between said handle means and the bearing surface of said rotary closing member, said casing member having at least one gas outlet thereon, said rotary closing member and said casing member having passages therein leading to said gas outlet, said passages and said means being arranged whereby in at least one rotary position of said rotary member one of said passages is shut ofi, stops limiting the rotary movement of said rotary member, said indicating means indicating a rotary position between said stops by a movement of said indicating means having a component in the direction of the axis of said rotary closing member.
