Description

I. W. DIRHOLD & H. F. LINNEMEYER.
nnmxnm ROLLER. No. 175,675. Batentefl. April 4.1876,.
UNITE STATES PATENT Grrroa JOHN W. DIRHOLD AND HENRY F. LINNEMEYER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN INDEXING-ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [75,675, dated April 4, 1876; application filed February 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: f
Be it known that we, JOHN W'. DIRHOLD and HENRY F. LINNEMEYER, of the city and county of- St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Indexing- Roller; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the i ndexing-roller; Fig. 2, a sectional view of same. Fig. 3 are details of the sockets carrying the type.
Our invention relates to a novel construc-' tion of adjustable indexing-roller or device for printing the letters of the alphabet upon the margin of the front pages of a book. It consists, mainly, of a radial series of type-carrying sockets, combined with a central adj ustin gscrew having a tapering middle portion, which, when the screw is turned, projects the typesockets farther from the center, and expands the roller, so as to leave a greater space between the type to accommodate a larger size of type. The said type-sockets are held in fixed position by a clamping-ring with bind ing-screws, and the device is rolled over the leaves to be printed by means of a detachable handle.
In the drawing, A represents an interiorly screw threaded hub formed on a disk, B, which latter isprovided with radial grooves a and bolt-holes b. O are the type-sockets, having longitudinal ribs 0 upon one side, and carrying in their ends the type D, which have stems d, that screw into the ends of the sockets. Said sockets are arranged with their ribs in grooves a of the disk B, so as to form a radial series with a central hole. These sockets with their type are prevented from falling out and held in a fixed position against the pressure upon the type in operating the roller by means ot'a clampin g-rin g, E, which is attached to disk B by means of binding-screws f, and holds the type-sockets firmly in position. For expanding the roller and adjusting the type farther out from the center, so as to leave a greater space between the type, we employ a short bolt, F, screw-threaded at the end, so as to mesh with the interior screw-threaded huh A, and draw itself through when turned. Said bolt has a handle at one end, by which it is turned, and on its middle portion has a conical or tapering bulge, g, which, as the bolt passes through the hub in its adjustment, presses against the inner ends of the typesockets and projects them farther out. This adjustment makes a greater space between the types when larger books are to be indexed, and adapts the socket to receive larger type.
To operate this roller we employ a handle, Gr, terminating in a ring, H, which fits over, and swivels upon, the hub A, a screw-nut being employed on the end ofthe hub to hold the handle on.
By means of the above-described construction books of any size may be rapidly indexed by simply passing the roller over the margin by means of the handle, and adjusting it, as described, for the different sizes of books.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is 1. In an indexing-roller, the combination, with a radial series of type-sockets, of a central tapering expanding bolt, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of disk B, having radial grooves, the type-sockets 0, having ribs 0, the type D, having stem 61, and the clamping-ring E, held by binding-screws), as and for the purpose described.
3; The combination of interiorly screwthreaded hub A, carrying disk B, the typesockets O, type D, clamping-ring E, the central screw-threaded bolt, having a tapered middle portion, and the handle G H, substantially as and for the purpose described.
