FREDERICK M. BOYCE, SOMERSET, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SHUTTER STOPS AND FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,654, dated April 4, 1876 application filed June .5, 1875. e
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERICK M. BOYCE, of Somerset, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Blind-Stops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 are views of my blind-stop as applied. Fig.3 is a sectional view of the stop.
This invention has relation to improvements in blind-stops. The object of the invention is to devise a means whereby a blind or shutter may be prevented from rattling and warping.
To this end the nature of the invention consists in a compressible rubber stop cast or molded about a suitable screw, whereby it is fastened to the wall of a house at or near the upper edge of the shutter, in combination with a latch or catch near the lower edge of the said shutter, whereby all rattling of the shutter will be efi'ectually prevented, and warping of the same done away with, as will be heredesigned to be secured to the wall of a house,
at or near the point which the upper part of the outer edge of the shutter will reach when itis thrown open and back. 0 designates a latch of any of the usual well-known forms, which is secured to the wall of the house near the lower edge of the blind, and is designed to prevent it from being blown to and closed by sudden gusts.
When the blind is'thrown open, stop A will be slightly compressed, and the moment latch or catch 0 takes hold upon its lower edge, the
reaction of the rubber portion a of the stop will force the blind out against the head d of the catch with considerable power, thus offectually preventing rattling. By this means, also, the blind is prevented from warping.
Every person of ordinary observation Will no doubt have noticed that outside blinds and shutters having no support at their upper ends warp inward toward the Wall of the house-a fact which is evidenced in many cases by the penetration of the light between the lintel of the window-frame and the upper part of the closed shutters. The efl'ect of this is to permit the light of the sun to enter into a room when not desired, and to cause the shut ters to present an unsightly appearance from the outside in consequence of warping; but by the use of the stop A this warping is absolutely prevented, and the defects above enumerated effectually obviated.
What 1 claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is I The catch 0, applied opposite and below the lower end of a window-blind, in combination with an elastic stop inserted in the wall opposite the upper end of said blind, the elastic stop being of sufficient length to force the blind against the catch when in engagement, and prevent rattling, substantially as speci lied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK M. Boron.
