This invention relates to means for forming plastic material about a steel structure to provide a composite column, although certain features thereof be employed with equal advantage for other purposes.
It contemplates more especially the provision of standard units of any suitable form which bear. a relation to each other to facilitate the assembly thereof so as to produce with ease, a mold or lagging of any desirable size and design Which may be readily dismantled and repeatedly used Without impairing their utility.
Numerous types of molds haveheretofore been proposed for use especially in forming reinforced concrete or other` plastically formed columns, but these have not proven entirely satisfactory in that they must necessarily be specially constructed for each individual column Which is not only laborious and expensive, but also renders them of little value after the column has set, it being necessary that they be partially or Wholly` destroyed in order to effect the removalV thereof.
Further, the lagging must be properly cerf.. tered about the particular beam or steel strucl ture to be reinforced, and to accomplish this end novel means are provided which are detachably associated With the lagging so as to permit the removal of the latter Without disturbing the former Which may be retained Within the plastic material to reinforce the structure. v
One object of the present invention is to improve and simplify the construction of devices of the type mentioned.
Another object is to provide standard units which bear a relation to each other to facili.- tate repeated assembling and dismantling of 4G the related units Without impairing ytheir utility.
Afurther object is to provide improved unitary means for spacing and reinforcing the lagging, thereby rendering the vlatter cax pable of withstanding appreciable stresses prevalent prior to the setting of the material contained therein.

VTo enable a ready and convenient positieni-ng of the lagging 11 about the steel structure, in this instance the vI-beam 10, spacing strips 18 are provided, which when oined as will later appear herein from bands adapted to embrace the beam 10 andto detachably engage the lagging 11 which, in this instance,
constitutes the sections 12 and 13, so as to Amaintain the latter in spaced relation to the beam as well as to serve as a reinforcing meansto -assist the lagging in withstanding the stresses created thereon by the. plastic material placed therein.V
In view of the fact that it may be necessary or at least highly desirable to use steel structures of various sizes asis quite common in building construction, itis advantageous to render the spacing strips 18. adjustable soas to adjustably embrace the I-beam 10 or other inner structures -of varying sizes.
The adjustable feature, in this instance, consists vin providing overlapping adjacent strips 18 which terminate in confronting hooks or loops 19 to receive therein 'a spacer 20, in this instance of sheet material preferably having'inclined sides slidable within the loops 19 to cause strips 18 *to-.embrace the I-beam 10 by a wedging action 'createdby the plate 20, as will be obvious from the showing in Figure 2. Vrlo retain the strips in their adjusted position, a clip 21 preferably of sheet material bentabout itself, is slidable on the overlapping ends of the strips 18 to resiliently embrace the latter, thereby maintaining them in the desired adju stment.
In the construction shown the strips 18 intersect each other at the corners of the I-beam lO where they are provided with interlitting slits 22 to prevent relative movement therebetween. The projecting ends of the bands 18 terminate in and constitute angularly related members 23 which have af portion, in this instanceanupper half or tongue 24, of their extremities projectingthrough appropriate slots 25 provided in the end sections 12. The extremities 24 are suitably apertured as at 26'` to receiveV a pinV 27 which lretains the end section 12'against movement with respect to the spacing bands formed from the strips 18. The other half portions 28 of the projections 23 of the strips 18, are bent to define, invthis instance, a triangle` with the angular related projecting portions 23 so as to properly sustain the bands Vwithin the lagging with a View of reinforcing the latter which are subjected to excessive stresses during the pouring o f the plastic material therein.

Means for forming plastic material, including a plurality of like elements adjustably interengageable With each other to form a band, and sectional lagging removably engageahle With and around said band to be supported thereby, said band remaining within said plastic material as reinforcing means when said lagging is removed.
