I In Figs; I-and'QI haveshown a penc'ilhaying a barrel or. casing l0 'which mayform the outer casing of the pencil or may besurroundedby/ an outercasingl'lg The clip comcasing lO, andbadapted to engage and grip the 'edgeof a'pooket, zor. otherportion of a garment, between .saidtongne and the body portion of the .pencil. ;A leaf spring 12 relat'ively fixed with respectto-the tongue 13 .at
the li i e-f' llew l; 1 f v prises a tongue 13, secured to thebar rel or BENJAMIN FRANK, or I metal-such as nick'el-silver,, is stamped or I V punched out in the shape shownin Fig.3,
new it will bei 'seen that -a"flatclo"sed loop jniemberI .14 isprovided, this loop member having an integral tongue 13. The central ,opening 15 of the; loop is shaped to conform with the cross-section of the pencil portion to which the clip is.to be attached. The
barrel 10, shown in Figs; 1 andQ'iscyline I seinble'dPOsition. Obviously other forms of,
attaching means between the clip and pencil l may be resorted to. :The member 14 shown with a notch 16"- for a purpose hereinafter appearing. The "free end ofthe 'tong'iieflll is preferablydished'as indicated'in Fig's. l and 2 so asto'pre's'eiit a'convex surface toward the pencil for-"engaging thefg'arm'ent'. VTli-e tongue 13 isbent in a general downward..di- 'rection with respect tothe 'loop l and is preferably curved to the shapeillnstrated in Figs. 1,2 and 3.
The leaf spring 12 is shown integrally secured to a fiat closed loop member 14* having .an opening 15. The inanufa'ctureand design of the structure'shof'vvn in Fig. 4 is substantiallyv the same-as that shown in Fig. .3, except that the leaf 12 is shown slightly shorter than thetongue l3- and is not dished at its free end, and exceptfurther that the member 14 is provided with a struck-up luglti instead of a notch 16. The'membei' M and its leaf 12 are constructed of resilient'sheet material, preferably resilient metal, such as The niemberl isthen forced or driyen down overthe casing 10 in such positiont'hat the 'h 'glli Will-enterthe'notch 16Iand' so thatithe parts 14, 14 and 12, 13 will engage each other leaf 12 constitute laminae to form alaminated the clip is to-be applied,-is polygonal, the
cantilever spring tongue. The lamina 12. is. relatively slidable withrespect to the lam na v 13 except at the upper ends ofthe same. A
strong durable spring tongue is thereby provided which will efiectively engage and grip the pocket, or other portion of a garment,
between said tongue and the body of the pencil. j I
' The clip is susceptible to modification in various respects without departing from the scope of the invention asdefined in the following claims. For example, if the cross-see tion'of that portion of thepencil, at. which openings 15 anew would be correspondingly shap'edl In thiscase the notch 16 and lug 16 may be omitted. Thus in Figs. 5.2LI1Cl6I have shown the design of the parts when adapted to be applied to a pencil whose cross section is hexagonal at the attaching portion. Preferably the tongue 13 is transversely conv caved as shown in Fig. 7 tostifienthe same,
the convex portion orbridge lying toward the tool 11 when the parts are assembled. It will also be noted that the leaf or tongue 12 lies in the groove or concavity of the tongue 13 (seeFig. 7) Obviously the feature shown in Fig. 7 may be embodied in either or both of the forms of clips illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 or5and6.
