i This invention relates to an eye set, the
' same being in the nature of an improvement 7 upon the eye set shown and described inthe pending application of Alexander Konofi, Serial No. 161,915, filedJanuary 18th, 1927, and an object of the present improvement is to provide an eye set which is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction and the parts of which; are so arranged that an eye 10 set of a givensize is adaptable for'use in doll heads of widely varying proportions without the exercise'of any care upon the part of an operator engaged in attaching the eye sets in the difierently proportioned heads.
A further object is to provide means whereby the two eye balls of the eye set may at no time in use rest in objectionably tight contact with the eye sockets of the head, and whereby the eye set isv permitted aslight but free tilting movement in a horizontal plane toinsure against a greater degree of tightness of one of the eye balls than the other against its socket.
A further object is to provide an improved attaching member for eye, sets so constructed as to include parts for engaging the doll head and which are positively locked against disengagement from the doll head and which at the same time provide for a suitably free tilting movement ofthe eye set upon avertical axis mid-way between the two eye balls. Refering now to the drawings fora detailed description of the'exemplary structure illustrated therein, the reference character L indicates a doll head or the like, the same being hollow as usual and having the spaced eye sockets 1 and 2 at opposite sides of the central or nose portion 3.

Interiorly of the head, and at the rear .of the central or nose portion 3 there is provided a pair of inwardly projecting lugs as 4 and 5 spaced at opposite sides of a line extending horizontally between the centres'of the eye sockets l and 2 and. thus providing an i open recess as 6 between them through which may extend a horizontalcross rod as 7 which carries the two eye balls as G and H.

bearing openings 9 are so disposed that the cross rod is held always in a position extending substantiallyhorizontally through the spherical centres of the eye balls or shells so that rotary movement of the eyes about the cross rod will not alter the fit of the outer spherical surface of the eyes with relation to the eye sockets .1 and 2.
In order to cause rotation of the eyes upon the cross rod, as well as to insure simultaneous rotation of the two eyes, a (shaped oper: atingmember. 10 is provided the opposite legs as 11 and 12 of which engage the eyes re-i spectivelyand the stem 13 of which carries a suitable weight as 14 by which the operating member is gravity controlled to produce rotation, or more correctly, oscillation, of the eyes in response to movement of the doll head "between-upright and reclining position, this movement beingof course relative since it is in fact the doll head which moves while the eyes are maintained relatively stationary through the gravity pull of weight 14.

In order to retain the legs 11 and 12 of the operating member properly centered with respect to the eye shells the shells are pref erably formed with shoulders as 22 and 23 at their rear edges projecting rearwardly of the plane of the edge surfaces 20' and 21' and adapted thereby to engage opposite sides of the portions 18 and 19 to thus prevent any objectionable movement of the eyes longitudinally of the cross rod without corresponding movement of the connected leg of the operating member. 7

Also if desired the legs 11 and 12 may be cut away at suitable points as at 30-3O to thereby provide localized regions of weakness adj acent the respective eyes at which points the legs 11 and 12 may be readily bent whenever it is desired to adjust the eyes relative to each other rotatably upon the cross rod.

VVhiIe it will of course be understood that eye shells having a supporting cross rod and an operating member as above set forth may 1 be supported inoperable position within the doll head by any appropriate means regardless of how the cro'ss rod is connected with the head, nevertheless, in attaching such eyes within doll heads having the central or nose lugs 4 and 5 as above referred to it is proposed that a specially formed attaohingmember as 32 may be employed, said attaching member being connected with the cross rod and being adapted to be inserted'in position between the lugs 4 and 5 to retain the cross rod in its proper operative position.
The attaching member 32 herein illustrated 'is formed from a single piece of sheet material, preferably sheet metal, the blank of which is illustrated in Fig. 6 wherein it will be seen to consist ofa central or base portion 33, opposite side wallportions 34 and 35 and opposite end wall portions 36 and 37.
The-side and end wall portions are integral with the base portion and, in thecompleted article, are bent relative thereto on lines 3838 so as todefine a rectangular structure. In bending down the side wall portions 34 and 35 said portions are bent into right angular relationship with the base portion so as to stand in substantially parallel relation to each other. In bendingdown the end wall por tions 36 and 37 said-portions are bent to and beyond right angular relation to the base portion so as to stand in inclined positions converging toward each other away from the base, see Fig. 5. The end wall portions are thus positioned directly between the side wall portions. I
The side wall portions are formed with bearing openings ,3939 therethrough through which the cross rod 7 extends, it being here noted that in use the attaching memher is placed between the nose lugs in a posi tion so that'tlie base portion 33 thereof is spaced back of the cross rod, thatiswith the side and end wall portions projectingifor- Wardly into the recess 6 and toward the front or face side of the doll.
The forward or freeedges as 40, and 41 of the end walls 36 and 37 are provided with tangs 42 and. 43 respectively said tangs being bent outwardly'and'being adapted to be driven into the opposing wall surfaces 44 and 45 of the nose lugs 4 and 5 respectively, by bending or swinging the end wall portions 36 and 37 outwardly to or near right angular relationship with the base portion 33, after the attaching'member has been inserted into 4 the recess 6.
The side wall portions 34 and 35 are provided with shoulder parts4646 arranged to hold the end wall'portions spread apart in operative position, as seen in Fig.4.
By reference to Fig; 7 it will berseen that the shoulder parts 46 each provides an in I clined surface as 47 leading thereto'and that the normalposition of the end wall portions is relatively behind said inclined surfaces. When the attaching device is being connected in position between the nose lugs the end walls 36 and 37 are forced away from each other over the inclinedsurfaces 4747,the side wall portions 34 and 35 meanwhile resiliently yielding sufficient to permit passage of the end wallsover said-inclined surfaces: As soon. as the end walls have moved sufficiently apart the side walls snap together and present the shoulders 46.46 behind the end walls and thereafter prevent retrogressive movement of the end walls and thus retain the tangs in positive engagement within the nose lugs.
Any suitable. tool may be employed for moving the end walls apart to drive the tangs pose the drawing Fig. 5' illustrates by dot and dash lines a simple tool consisting of two parts as 48 and 49 insertedthr-ough openings as 50 and 51 provided for the purpose through the base port-ion 33, the part 48 being adapted to engage the wall 36 and the 'part49 being adapted to engage the wall 37, and said two parts. being intended to be spread apart to thereby also spread said walls.
It is a feature of this invention to provide means. for guarding against a too tight engagement of the eye balls or shells against the eye sockets of the head when the operation of attaching the eye sethas been completed, and to this end it is noted that when the eye shells are initially presented into. the eye sockets, and the attaching member presented into the recess 6, the attaching member is in the condition indicated in Fig. 5, that is with the end whichsaid end walls are connected with the base portion 33, and that in bending these end walls away from each other into parallelism, as in Fig. 4, for driving the tangs 42 and 43 into the nose lugs, the base portion 33,
and consequently the side wall portions 34 and 35 will be eased backwardly, and in addi- .tion to this it is noted that the tangs 42 are not at right angles to the end walls but on the contrary are inclined with respect to said end walls so that they will operate to cam, or
wedge, the entire attaching member back wardly as they are driven intothe material of the lugs. V
- From. this it will be seen that in bending apart theend walls'of the attachingmember and driving the retaining tangsinto the lugs said action will necessarily result in a backward movement of the side walls of the attaching member, and a consequent easing of the eye shells away from the eye sockets of the head, a distance determined by the inclination of the end walls toward each other upon the pivots 52 and 53 at the moment when the retaining tangs are presented against the surfaces 44 and 45 of the lugs and the degree of inclination of the lugs with respect to said end walls. 1
Due to the fact each of the end walls of the attaching member provides only a single retaining tang for engaging the nose lugs,
and to the fact that these tangs are aligned spaced apart above and below the horizontal plane of the cross rod 7, it follows that the attaching member, and consequently the cross rod and theeyes'carried thereby. are'capable of a tilting movement upon a vertical El XlS'GX- tending through said tangs. ,Accordingly, it
tangs and therebyautomaticallv adjust the eye set to relieve the objectionable tightness of one of the eyes.
If for any reason it should become necessary to remove an eye set from a head it is simply necessary to introduce a tool, similar to that already described, and swing apart the side walls 34 and 35 of the attaching member a suflicient distance to remove the shoulders 46-46 from behind the end walls 36 and 37. The end walls will be immediately free to return to their original inclined position, thereby withdrawing the tangs from the lugs and thus releasing the eye set, it being noted that the material from which the attaching member is formed is sufficiently springy to accomplish this result.
i As many changes could be made in this con struction, without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanymg drawin s, shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An eye set comprising a pair of eyes, means connecting said eyes together, attaching means for attaching said connecting means with a doll head, and said attaching means having vertically arranged pivot parts 1 for engagement with the doll head to thereby support the eye set for adjustment upon a vertical axis.
2. An eye set comprising a pair of eyes, a cross rod extending between and connecting said eyes, an attaching member engaging the cross rod intermediate'the eyes, said attaching member having wall portions arranged above and below the cross rod and movable away from each other, and pivot forming means provided upon said wall portions adapted to engage spaced parts of a doll head when said wall portions are moved away from each other whereby to pivotally support'the eye set for automatic adjustment upon a vercross rod intermediate the eyes, said attaching member having opposite wall portions plvotally connected therewith adapted 'to swing from a position converging toward each anther to a position substantially parallel with each other, anddoll head engaging means carried by, said wallportions adjacent the free edges thereoi by which to fix the at taching member in position within a doll 1 head, togetherwith other means comprised in said attaching member fo'rholding said wall portions swung into their parallel position.
4. An eye set comprising a pair of eyes,
a cross rod extending between and supporting said eyes, the eyes being rotatable and.
slidable upon said cross rod,operating means for said'eyes comprising a pair of'members connected with said eyes respectively, means pivotally connecting said members together, a weight carried by said members collectively, one of said members providing a bump portion extending beyond the weight. each of said memebrs providing bumper portions extending beyond the eyes, and both of said members being formed of spring material.
5. An eye set comprising a pair of eyes, a cross rod extending between and supporting said eyes, the eyes being rotatable and slidable upon said cross rod, operating means for said eyes including a weight, members extending from the-weight to said eyes respectively each of said members having a portion providing an opening through which the cross rod extends to thereby slidably and rotatably connect said members with the cross rod, each ofsaid members also having parts engaging the eyes to cause simultaneous rotation of the eyes with said members, each of said members comprising a fiat strip of sheet metal and each having portions of reduced width whereby to define regions of weakness where said members may be readily bent for thereby adjusting the eyes with respect to each other.

An eye set comprising a pair of eyes, a cross rod extending between and supporting said eyes, the eyes being rotatable and slidable upon said cross rod, operating means for said eyes including a weight, members extending from the weight to said eyes respectively each of said members having a portion providing an opening through which the cross rod extends to thereby slidably and rotatably connect said members with the cross rod, each of said members also having parts engaging the eyes to cause simultaneous rotation of the eyes with said members, each of said members comprising a fiat strip of sheet metal and each having portions of reduced width whereby to provide suitably resilient parts to serve as bumpers for limiting the weight controlled movements of the eyes. 7

An eye set comprising a pair of eyes, a cross rod extending between and connecting said eyes, an attaching member engaging the cross rod intermediate the eyes, and said attaching member having portions arranged above and below the cross rod and movable away from each other together with pivot q forming means provided upon each of'said ment oned portions for engaging spaced parts of the doll headwhen said portions are moved away from each other to thereby pivotally 'supportthe eye set for movement upon a vertical pivot. r V
8.. An eye'set comprising a pair of eyes spacedapart, attaching means arranged in the space between the eyes by which to. connect the eyes with a doll head, means by which said attaching means is connected with the eyes, said attaching means including a pair of members spaced apart one above and the other below the horizontal plane of a straight line between the centres of the eyes, and pivot forming means carried by said pair of members projecting away from each other one up wardly and the other downwardly, together with means whereby said pair of members are movable to cause said pivot forming means to engage opposing portions of the doll head for providing pivotal connection of the eyes with the head about a vertical axis.
9. An eye set comprising a pair of eyes 7 spaced apart, attaching means arrangedin the space between the eyes by which to connect the eyes with a 'doll head, means by which said attaching means is connected with the eyes, said attaching means having vertically arranged pivot parts disposed one above and the other below the horizontal plane of a straight line between the centres of the eyes engaging spaced portions of the doll head for providing pivotal connection" of the eyes with the head about a vertical 7 axis.
10. An eye set comprising a pair of eyes spaced apart, attaching means arranged .in
Y the space between the eyes bywhich'to connect the eyeswith a doll head, means by which said attaching means is connected with the eyes, said attaching means having vertically arranged pivot parts disposed one above and the other below the horizontal plane of a straight line between the centres of the eyes movable into engagement with spaced portions of the doll head for providing pivotal connection of the eyes with the head about a vertical axis, together with means for retaining said pivot parts in engagement with the doll head.
11. An eye set comprlsmg a pair of eyes, a cross rod upon which the eyes are mounted spaced apart, attaching means for connecting said eyes with a doll head, and said attaching means having vertically arranged pivot parts adapted to be projected into embedded relation-with parts of a doll head in a plane transversely of the cross rod to thereby support the eye set for adjustment upon a vertical axis.
