The invention relates to an improvement in electrical bonding means for thev meeting ends of railway rails wherein, sthrough the provision'of certain mechanical elements', the
s electrical continuity of the railway rails is insured. t Y
The'main object of the present invention is the provision of clamps in the form of yokes and a Contact plate' held between the le yoke and rail and furnishing a comparatively large contact surface between a conductor and the rail end, the yoke being moved to a position to securely hold the contact plate through' the' use of a wedge. The invention is illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, in which:
'Figure V1 is a vertical sectional view through a railroad rail illustrating the im- 1 proved bonding means in applied position.
a metallic plate and may if`V desired have longitudinally ranging spaced re- Y 35 inforcing lor strengthening ribs al, whereby the yoke is in effect a rigid member.
That portion of the yoke overlying yone* 'edge of the base flange of the rail is of greater length than the opposite similar end of the 40 yoke and between such extended end andthe base flangeis arranged a contact plate @have ing a portion tooverlie the upper surface o the base flange and la portion to abutsquarely against the edge Yof the base flange. Thus 45 Vthe contact plate chas a comparatively broad contact cooperation throughout the areas c2,
as indicated in Figure l.V v i The lrelatively Vouter edge ofthe contact plateis ,formed more or less concave, as in-j. 50 dicatedat al, between which and the rounded "ci of ,which is preferably yformed with yer'ti- Y .-desiredsurface contact. rlhe yoke member is preferably in respective lthereby at once` lfree the parts. f nent lmeans having direct or indirect conneciezaserai iior'esrfiez, anav in roinauanuary 3, `1927.
surface` of the yoke fend is arranged the `'coii-` i ductor `proper,findicated at d, which extends froml one bonding means to the other across the meeting ends of the respective railsv to be bonded.l Between. the oppositeyoke end Y and the Vedgel o'flftheba'seflange yof therail there islinterposed av wedge @,theouter edge e2 of which conforms to ythe curvatureofthe ad]acent 4end 'of :the'yoke and the inneredge cally ranging teethser'ving tohold the wedge Vin applied position l against displacement uder the Yj ar incident to the travel ofthetrains. Asy applied, it .will be-,seen that 'the wedge forces the `yoke transvcrselywith respect to the rail and Vnotonly binds the conductor l lfirmly and securelybetween they'oke end and contact platel but r,also binds `the contactplate securely` against the edge and upper surface ofithefbase ,flfange',` thus providing at each 70 juncture the intimate metallic contact neces- 'sary to aproper'el'ectrical conductivity.
,Irwin be noted thatthe upper surface of the contact plate aand the corresponding overlying. portion ofthe ,yoke v are inclined vwith respect to the horizontal, so that as the yoke is drawn to vposition by driving the lwedge inwardly, lthereis a wedgingcoopera-` tion between. the yoke and contact `plate,v tending to more firmlyv -secure the parts'in the so It is understood that bonding means such as here lillustrated is' secured vto the'rend of e'ach'fof ,the meeting ends of railroadprails with .the conductor d'ext'ending from one e5 Ibondingmeans to the other, asindicated in Obyioulsly,the wedges of these i bonding' Vmeans maybe vreadily Vdriven inA place and if repair or replacement is'necessary', may be driven out 0f yposition to e0 No perma- Figure 2.
tion with the rails themselves is necessary and thus the liability of breakageor difficulty in separat-ion is entirely avoided by the im- 9l5' proved bonding means.
'The present wedgeconnection is also suit- .y e V able for connecting main ground lines as well as for transversely connecting parallel tracks ,of government railways and the like, in order: lOO Y j;
tocompensate for the different potentials of the track.
