An object of this invention is to provide a combined locking andfcenter pin construction for body and truck holsters of railway cars, of rugged design, including a pin having a substantial shank portion to vresist shearing and full head members at both ends thereof having shouldered engagement with the body and truck h-clsters to securely lock the holsters together against separation in a vertical direction. Another object of the invention is to provide a combined locking and center pin having heads at opposite ends thereof, each of the heads having a shank portion formed integral therewith, both of the shank portions extending into the center pin opening of the bolster and being interlocked with each other to prevent endwise separation.
A still further obj ect of the invention is to provide a combined locking andcenter pin for body and truck holsters having head members at opposite ends thereof which are in shouldered engagement with the holsters to prevent separation, one of said heads having a tubular sleeve portion formed integral therewith, extending through and fitting the center pin openings of the holsters, and the other head having an integral shank portion telescopedv within the sleeve and tting the same, the shank and sleeve together forming the complete shank of the pin and being locked to each other against endwise separation.

In said drawing, designatesa portion of the body holster of a railway car andv 11 a portion of the cooperating truck holster. vThe body .holster has the usual -top and bottom web members connected by an integral tubular section 12 which accommodates one of the heads of the center pin. The truck bolster also has the usual top and bottom web members and transverse spaced walls, defininga pocket 13 which accommodates the head at the bottom end yof the pin. The body holster is provided with a hearing projection 14 at the bottom thereof which has a spherical bearing surface cooperating with a similar hearing surface on a hearing plate 15 seated in a pocket 16 at the top of the` truck bolster.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the body and truck holsters with aligned center pin receiving openings 17 and 18, respectively, the opening 18 of the truck bolster extending through the bearing plate 15. The pin receiving openings of the :two holsters and the bearing plate arepreferahly of the same diameter.
rl`he sleeve-like portion 12 and thepocket 13 of the two holsters are of larger diameter than the pinl receiving openings, thereby providing pockets having annular shoulders aoljacent thel pin receiving openings, forming retaining means cooperating with the heads at the opposite ends of the center pin.
My improved center pin proper comprises an outer member A, an inner member B,and a locking element C. rlhe members A and B of the center pin are secured togetheragainst endwise separation and together form a suhstantially solid pin member.
The member' A comprises a tubulary or sleeve-like shank portion 38 having a relatively heavy head'member 19,formed at the upper end thereof. The tubular portion 38 is of such an exterior diameter as to fit the pin receiving openings 17 and-18 of the bolsters and extends enti-rely through said openings, as most clearly shownin Figure 2. The head 19 of the sleeve 38 has engagement with the annular shoulder of the ,oodyl holster,
thereby preventing downward movement of the member A. The bore of the tubular portion extends into the head 19 and is formed with diametrically opposed spaced interior ribs 20-20 on the opposite side walls thereof. As shown in Figure 3, the ribs are spaced apart to provide diametrically opposed vertically extending slots or guide-ways 21-21 for a purpose hereinafter pointed out. The upper wall of the head 19 is provided with openings 22-22 which register with the slots 21.
The member B of the center pin comprises a head portion 23 and an integral shank 24. The shank 24 is of sucha size as to telescope within the bore of the tubular member 38 and is provided with spaced llugs 25-25 on diametrically opposite sides thereof, which are vadapte'dto linterlock with the ribs 2O of the memb'erA. The lugs 25 are 'of such a width that they will Apass freely through the slots 21 when the member vB is telescoped with the member A. The shank portion 24 is flattened onofpposite'sides, as indicated at 2(3--26` The shank 24is preferably rounded ofi adjacent the head23 and the bottom end of the tubular portion of the niemlive'r lA is -similarly rounded olf to fit said shan-k portion. When the shank of the member B hfas lbeen telescoped with-in the tubular portionfof the member Aand the lugs 25 brought into registration with'the openings between the r-ibs20, the members A and Bare rotated relatively to each -otherso f'as to engage the lugs between the ribs, thus bringing the parts inthe position shown'in the drawings, reference being made especially to Figure 3. The shank of the member B is forced upwardly through the tubular portion of the member A until limited by engagement of the head 23 with the bottom end of the member A, whereupon the lugs 25 will be in registration with the spaces between the ribs 20. The members A and B are Vthen given a quarter turn with respect to each other to engage the lugs between the ribs 20, thus interlocking the members A and B against endwise movement with respect to each other. The retaining element C is then applied through the pocket of the body bolster, the arms 27 thereof being inserted through the openings 22 of the head 19 and forced'downwardly into the slots 21 of vthe bore of the member A, thereby interlocking the parts against rotation as hereinbefore pointed out.V
To remove the locking pin from the bolsters, the retaining element C is withdrawn through the pocket of the body bolster and the member B is given a quarterrotation so as to register the lugs thereof with the slots of the member A and it may be then withdrawn through thepocket of the truck bolster.
Fromthe preceding description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be evident that l have provided an exceedingly rugged locking center `pin construction wherein the center pin is provided with full head members at opposite ends thereof which effectively interlock the holsters against vertical separation and, further, the telescoped arrangement of the shank portions cf the members of the pin provide a substantially solid construction which ofte-rs the maximum resistance against shearing, vthereby preventing separation of the holsters in case of emergency by failure of the center pin, thereby reducing the danger of telescoping of cars in case of collision.
WVhile I have herein shown and described what l consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, the same is merely illustrative and l contemplate all changes and modifications which come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I' claim:
1. ln car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin receiving openings; of a center pin provided with heads at opposite ends thereof having vshouldered engagement with the body and truck holsters, respectively, each of said heads yhaving shank portion formed thereon, one of said shank portions being in the form of a sleeve Aand the other shank portion Ybeing telescoped within said sleeve, said shank portions respectively extending through the openings of both holsters and being locked together against endwise separation 'and :together forming the complete Y and ttruck holsters of railway cars provided with alined center pin shank receiving openings, said pin having heads at opposite ends thereof, one of said heads havingl a sleevelike shank portion formed integral therewith and the other head being secured to said sleeve-like shank by a connecting element telescoped within said sleeve-like shank and held against endwise movement with respect to the same, said connecting element and sleeve together forming a substantially solid member extending through the openingsof both holsters functioning as the shank proper of the center pin.
3. In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin openings and shoulders adjacent said openings; of a sleeve member having a head at one end, said head cooperating with the shoulder of one of said holsters and said sleeve extending through the pin receiving openings of the holsters and fitting they same, and a member having a head and a shank portion, said last named head cooperating with the shoulder of the other holster and said shank being telescoped within' the sleeve and extending past the meeting faces of the holsters to resist shear, said sleeve and shank being locked against endwise separation.
4. In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin receiving openings and a. retaining shoulder adjacent each opening; of a center pin having heads at opposite ends thereof cooperating with the retaining shoulders of the body and truck holsters, respectively, said pin including the tubular member rigid with one of the heads and fitting said pin receiving openings of both holsters and a solid connecting member telescoped within said tubular member and extending through the pin opening of one bolster and into the pin opening of the other bolster. said connecting member being locked against endwise separation with respect to said tubular member, said connecting member having the other head formed thereon.
5. In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin receiving openings, each opening having a retaining shoulder adjacent thereto of a center pin having heads at opposite ends thereof cooperating with the retaining shoulders of the body and truck holsters, respectively, said pin including a sleeve member having one of the heads formed thereon and fitting said pin receiving openings and a solid filler member telescoped within said sleeve member and projecting through the center pin openings of both holsters, said filler memher being locked against endwise separation with respect to said sleeve member, said filler member having Lthe other head of the pin formed thereon.
6. In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned 'center pin openings; of a center pin having -head members at opposite ends thereof having-shouldered engagement with the holsters to prevent separation of the same, said pin having a shank member formed on each of the heads thereof, said shank members each being of such a length as to extend through the openings ofhoth holsters, one of'said shank members being hollow and having the other shank member telescoped-therewithin, and cooperating means on said shank member yfor interlocking the same against endwise separation.
7.- In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin receiving openings and a retainingshoulder Vadjacent each opening; of a center pin having heads at opposite ends thereof cooperating'with the retaining shoulders of the bodyand truck holtsers, respectively, each ofsaid heads having a shank member formed integral therewith, one of said shank members being` hollow and telescoped over the ,other shank member, said shank members having cooperating means thereon for. interlocking the same against endwise separation, said locking means being rende-red operative by relative rotation of said shank members, and means for locking said shank members against relative rotation.
8. In n car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin receiving openings and -a retaining shoulder adjacent eachopening; of a center pin having heads at opposite ends thereof cooperating with the retaining shoulders of the body and truck holsters, respectively, said pin includinga tubular member fitting said pin receiving openings and having one of the heads of the pin formed thereon, and a connect-ing member telescoped within said tubular member and having the other lhead of the pin formed thereon, a bayonet slot connection between said tubular member and connecting member to lock the same againstendwise separation; and means for locking said tubular member `and said connecting member against relative rotation while permitting bodily rotation of the pin with respect to the bolster.
9. In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin receiving openings and a retaining shoulder adjacent each opening; of a center pin having heads at opposite ends therefof cooperating with the retaining shoulders of the body and truck holsters, respectively, said pin including a tubular member fitting said pin receiving opening and having one of the heads of the pin formed thereon, and a connecting member telescoped within said tubular member and having the other head of the pin formed thereon, a bayonet slot connection between said tubular member and connecting member to lock the same against v`endWise sej'iaration; and a retaining element for locking said tubular member and connecting member against relative rotation.
