rilhis invention relates to improvements in car construction.
In the operation of railway passenger cars, it is highly desirable that means be provided to prevent separation of the body and truck holsters in the event of a collision, in order to eliminate or minimize danger of telescoping of the cars. Vith the types of bolster locking pins heretofore provided for the above purpose, much difficulty has been encountered in the use thereof on certain classes of cars, particularly dining cars. As well known, most passenger cars employ sixwheel trucks, the center axle of which is directly located below and adjacent the center pin, so that it becomes either impossible or exceedingly ditlicult to insert or remove the bolster locking pin from the under side of the holsters whenever it becomes necessary to remove the car body from the trucks in making repairs.y This difiiculty has been partially overcome by inserting the locking pin through the floor of the car from above the holsters, but this expedient is unsatisfactory, especially inr the case of dining cars. In dining cars, the heavy kitchen range is almost universally located directly over the centers of one rset of holsters, and consequently, when necessary to separate the car body from the trucks, it has heretofore been necessary to lirst remove the kitchen range. Obviously this involves much labor, expense and delay in carrying out the desired repairs. p
One object of my invention is to provide a holster locking center pin, especially adapted for those cars where the pin cannot conven iently be inserted or removed from the under sides of the holsters and which improved pin will readily permit separation of the body and truck holsters without the necessity of obtaining access to either the upper side of the body bolster or the under side of the truck bolster after the pin has oncebeen applied.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bolster locking center pin which may be rendered ineffective temporarily by merely withdrawing removable locking means associated therewith, which removable means 192 Serial No. 260,025.

Other objects of the invention will mere clearly appear from the description and claims hereinafter following.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken diametrically of the center bearing portions of the body and truck holsters of ak passenger car and showing my improvements in connection therewith, certain of the parts being broken away in order to better accommodate the figure on the drawing. And Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view, corresponding to the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
In said drawing, A indicates, broadly, a body bolster of a passenger' car, and B a truck holster, the latter being generally in the form of a spider, but the details of which are unnecessary of illustration or description in connection with my invention, inasmuch as the details of the holsters may vary, as will be obvious. The improved locking center pin comprises two elements C and l) and a retaining key E, the details of which will be hereinafter set forth.
The body bolster A is, or may bc, of any well known construction, and, as shown, is formed with a vertical elongated hub section 10 having a vertically extending, cylindrical openin 11 for the reception of the center pin. At the upper end of said opening 11, the body bolster is provided with a rectangular horizontal shoulder 12 and the opening upwardly thereof is of similar cross section, as indi cated at 13. Aportion of the car floor is indicated at 14, between which andthe top of' the body bolster A is an annular collar or sleeve 15, through which the upper element C of the center pin may be entered from above, the floor opening being closed by any suitable means, such as the cover plate 16.
The body bolster A is preferably formed with an integral center bearing plate section 17 co-operable with a preferably detachable center bearing plate 1S, the latter being mounted on the truck bolster B and confined in proper position by sections 19-19 of the truck bolster. it is evident that I overcome the di'jiculties and disadvantages inherent in toriner types of center locking pins, particularly where such pins are used on passenger equipment, The arrangement is such that no special designs of bolsters are required and the locking center pin may also be manufactured at compari tively small expense.
Although l have herein shown andv described uf'hat l consider the preferred manner ot carrying out my invention, the same is merely illustrative and l contemplate all changes and modifications Which come Within the scope ot the claims appended hereto.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having aligned center pin openings; of a shouldered pin extending within said openings, the shoulder thereof being adapted to co-operate with a shouldered p ortion on the truck bolster to prevent separation of said pin therefrom in one direction; and laterally removable locking key extending entirely through the pin and the opposed walls of the opening of the body bolster and having shouldered engagement with said pin and the body bolster, whereby to prevent separation between said pin and said body bolster.
3. In car construction7 the combination with body and truck bolsters having aligned center pin openings; of a headed pin extended through the truck bolster and having the shank thereof extended within the body bolster, the head of said pin limiting the upward movement of the pin with respect to the truck bolster; means secured to the truck bolster engageable with said pin; adapted to prevent the latter from falling down; and transversely removable means having shouldered engagement with the body bolster and said pin.r to prevent relative vertical separation of said pin and body bolster.
4. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having aligned center pin openings; of a headed pin extended through the truck bolster and having the shank thereof extended Within the body bolster, the head of said pin limiting the upward movement of the pin with respect to the truck bolster; means secured to the truck bolster engageable with said pin, adapted to prevent the latter :trom falling down; and transversely removable means having shouldered engagement with the body bolster and said pin, to prevent relative vertical separation of said pin and body bolster, rsaid means comprising a key extending transversely through aligned openings in the body bolster and pin.
5. In car construction, the combination with a bolster having a relatively elongated hub section; of a second co-operable bolster; a headed pin entered through the opening of said second named bolster, the shank of the pin extending within the hub section of the first named bolster; and a transversely removable key extending through aligned openings in the opposed Wall portions ot said hub section and an opening in the shank of the pin; said key approximately fitting said openings of the pin and hub section to lock the pin against removal and rotation with respect to the iirst named bolster.
6. In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin openings, each bolster having an annular shoulder adjacent its corresponding end ot the center pin opening; a two-section center pin; each section being entered each section having a head adapted to c0- operate with the corresponding adjacent shoulder and the shanks of said sections overlapping; and removable means extended transversely through the shanks ot both sections and one of the holsters.
7. In car construction, a body bolster having a center pin opening and a shoulder at the top end of said opening; of a truck bolster' having a center pin opening and a shoulder at the lower end of said opening; a center pin element shouldered at its upper end and adapted to co-operate with the body bolster shoulder and having the shank extending into the center pin opening; a second center pin element having a shouldered end adapted to co-operate with the shoulder of the truck bolster and having its shank entered Within the center pin opening, said shanks overlapping; and laterally removable means having shouldered engagement with each of said pin sections and one of the holsters.
8. In car construction, a body bolster having a center pin opening and a shoulder at the top e'nd of said opening; ot' a truck bolster having a center pin opening and a shoulder at the lower end of said opening; a center pin element shouldered at its upper end and adapted to co-operate with the body bolster shoulder and having the shank extending into the center pin opening; a second center pin element having a shouldered end adapted to co-operate with the shoulder of the truck bolster and having its shank entered within the center pin opening, said shanks overlapping; and laterally removable means having shouldered engagement with each of said pin sections and one of the holsters,r said means comprising a key extended through aligned openings in said shanks and in the body bolster.
9. In car construction; the combination with body and truck holsters having alined center pin openings; of a pin extended Within said openings, said pin having shouldered engagement with one ol the holsters to prevent removal o'li the pin therefrom in one direction; and means extending through the pin and opposed walls of the opening in the other bolster to prevent separation between said pin and said other bolster; said means being bodily removable in a lateral direction to permit separation of said holsters. n
