vcombined locking and center pin for connecting the holsters of a railway car, which is of simple, rugged design, and may be readily applied to and detached from the holsters, wherein the pin includes a shank portion having means at opposite ends having` shouldered engagement with shoulders adjacent the center pin openings of the respective holsters, said means at one end of the pin at least being detachable to allow removal of the pin or separation of the holsters. the detachable means including a member displaceable with respect to the pin to interlock the same therewith.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pin of the character indicated in the preceding paragraph, wherein the detachable member is rotatable with respect to the pin to interlock' the same therewith. the pin being so formed at one end'portion thereof asto pass through an opening provided in the rotatable locking member when the latter is in one position and having shouldered engagement with said member when the latter is displaced by partial rotation of the same, and wherein keeper means is provided for locking the 'pin and said rotatable member againstrelative rotation when in shouldered engagement.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in connection with a center pin of the character described adjustment to compensate for wear of the parts and also'locli the pin against rotation with respect to one of the holsters.

The body bolster is provided with the usual downwardly projecting bearing portion 12, which is in the general form of a spherical member. T he truck holster is provided with a cooperating bearing block 13 disposed within a pocket 14 at the top of the truclr holster and having a concave bearing seat 15 at the top thereof within which the bearing member 12 of the hotly bolster engages.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the body and truclr holsters with alined center pin receiving openingsv 16 andr 17, the body holster being provided with a pocket 18 at the upper end of the opening 16 of larger cross sectional area than said open ing. The trucl'bolster is provided with an annular shoulderlS at the lower'end of the pin receiving opening 17 thereof. The top and bottom portions of the truck holster are connected by the usual spaced webs, as clearly shown in Figure 2, which define a poclret 2O therebetween. Thebearing bloclz 13 is provided with an opening 21 corresponding in size tothe opening 17 of the truck holster. rlheV openings 17 and 21 are preferably of circular cross section'.y The bottom portionl of the opening 16 of the body bolster is Yalso preferably of circular cross section'and immediately above said portion opposed wall sections of said opening converge inwardly as shown in Figure 2, the extreme upper end portion of `said opening being of oblong cross section as clearly indicated in Figure 4.
My improved center pin proper comprises broadly a center pin member A, a retaining element B composed of a plurality of sections; and a U-shaped locking element C.
At the bottom end, the shank portion of the in member is of substantially cylindrical orm so as to fit the corresponding circular openings 17 and 21 of the truck bolster and the bearing block 13 and also t the circular' ortion at the bottom of the opening 16 of the ody bolster. At the bottom end, the pin is provided With.an integral head member 22 adapted to have shouldered engagement with the annular shoulder 19. Above the cylindrical shank portion, the pin member A has the opposite side sections thereof tapered inwardly, as most clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3, thereby providing an oblong upper end section on the shank. At the upper end, the pin member is provided with a partial head 23 formed by laterally projecting lugs or tiges on diametrically opposite sides of thc shank. The partial head section 23 is of such a sizeas to pass through the center pin receiving openings of the bolsters when the pin is being assembled with the same, and also pass through the portion of oblong cross section of the opening 16 when said pin is properly positioned. The pin is of such a length that when assembled with the bolsters the partial head member 23 at the upper end thereof is spaced an appreciable distance above the bottom ofthe pocket 18. The bottom wall of the pocket adjacent the opening 16 forms a retaining shoulder 24 which prevents removal of the pin in a manner hereinafter pointed out.
The retaining element B comprises a pluralit of ring-like Washers or shims 25-25, Whic are interposed between the shoulder 24 of the body bolster and the partial head 23 of. the pin A. The number of shims or washers employed may be varied so as to space the head 22 at the bottom end of the pin the desired distance from the shoulder 19 of the truck bolster to provide the required clearance Vbetween these parts. The retaining element B, lin the present instance, is shown as composed'of four similar ring-like members 25. Each member`25 has an oblong central opening 26 of such a size as to permit free passage therethrough of the partial head 23 of the in A when the rings 25 are in such a position that the openings thereofregister with the projecting lug-like sections forming the partial head 23. When the parts of the pin are assembled so as to lock the bolsters together, the retaining element B is so disthat the oblong opening thereof is out fmlinement with the projecting lugs of the In order to prevent accidental relative rotation of the retaining element B and the pin A after the parts have been assembled and the locking element has been partially rotated with respect to the pin, the U-shaped locking element C is employed. As most clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3, the U- shaped locking element has a pair of downwardly extending parallel arm portions 36-36, which are enlarged at their bottom ends and are adapted to fit within the outer portions at opposite ends of the elongated opening of the retaining element B. As most clearly illustrated in Figures 2, 3 and 4, the opposite sides of the upper end portion of the pin A are flattened as indicated at 27-27 and the inner sides of the arms 36-36 of the U-shaped member C bear on said flattened port-ions. The upper end portion of the opening 16 of the body bolster, which is contracted as shown, corresponds in horizontal section to the horizontal cross section of thev corresponding shank portion of the pin A, as most clearly shown in Figure 4.
As will be obvious, due to the interftting relation of the upper end of the shank portion and the contracted portion of the opening-16, relative rotation of the pin with respect to the body bolster 10 is prevented. The upper connecting section of the locking member C is preferably spaced from the upper end of the pin A, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, so as to permit vertical adjustment of the pin with respect to said member. When the parts become worn, so that the amount of clearance between the fixed head 22 and the shoulder 19 ofl the truck bolster is increased, this Wear may be compensated for by adding a shim or washer 25 to the retaining element B, which will effect lifting of the partial head 23 of the pin, which head is supported on the retaining element. As Will be obvious, by thus adjusting the parts, the amount of clearance between the upper end of the pin and the connecting portion of the U-shaped locking member C is decreased.
In the present instance, the locking center pin is shown as supported by a shelf 28 in the form of a flanged plate having the vertical fianges thereof riveted to the connecting webs of the truck bolster. The shelf 28 directly supports the head 22 of the locking center pin A. As will be evident, the locking center pin is fully operative without the supporting shelfv28, but this shelf forms a convenient supporting means for the pin when the pin is unlocked from the body bolster and it is not desired to completel remove the pin but merely lift the body bolsterl from the truck bolster.
In applying the center pin to the body and truck holsters of the car, the pin is inserted from the bottom of the truck bolster through the alined openings of the truck and body wie am imma- CTI bolsters, the pin being so disposed that the oblong partial head member 23 at the upper end thereof registers with the oblong section of the upper end of the opening of the truck bolster. When the pin has been completely inserted with the partial head portion 23 thereof, spaced above the retaining shoulder 24: of the body bolster, the locking element B is applied by registering the oblong yopeningsV of the sections 25 thereof With the partial head and dropping the same over said head. After the sections 25 are in position belenT the partial head n3, the same are bodily rotated about the pin through an angle of 90O so as to bring the oblong opening of the retaining element out of alinement With the projecting portions of the partial head member 23 and place the opposite ends of the opening of the retaining element B in r alinement with the flattened sides of the pin A. The U-shaped locking element C is then applied by inserting the arms 36-36 thereof Within the end portions of the opening of the retaining element B, thereby locking the retaining element B against rotation With respect to the pin. After the pin A has been assembled to the truclr bolster, the supporting shelf 28 may be applied and secured to the truck bolster by riveting the saine. When it is desired to separate the holsters of kthe car Without actually removing the pin from the truck bolster, the locking element C is iirst removed so as to permit rotation of the sectional retaining element B. rEhe element B is then turned to a position Where the oblong opening thereof registers with the projecting port-ions of the partial head 23', whereupon the retaining element B may be lifted 'out of engagement with the pin A. As Will be evident, the body bolster may then be lifted from the truck bolster. In case it is kdesired to remove the pin entirely, the shelf 28 is detached and the pin dropped through the truclr bolster. v y

I claim:

In car construction, the combination With body and truck` bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings andl retaining shoulders adjacent said openings respectively; n of a connecting center pin extending through said openings, said pin having a head member at one end having shouldered engagement with the corresponding retaining shoulder, the pin at the other end being provided with lateral projections; and a retaining element having shouldered engagement with the shoulder of the corresponding bolstergsaid retainingelement having;` an
opening through which the corresponding end of the pin is adapted to pass when said elementis in one position and With which when said element is given a partial rotation,`

In car construction, the combination With cooperating bodyl and'truck holsters engagement with both the pin and the other having alined center pin receiving openings; of n. connecting center pin extending through said openings and having shouldered engagement with one of said holsters adjacent the 5 outer end of the correspondingr opening, the
other end of the pin having the shank portion thereof reduced in cross section and being provided with a partial head member at said end, said partial head member being of sucha size as to pass through the center pin receiving openings; and a retaining element having shouldered engagement with the other bolster, said retaining element having an opening therethrough of such a contour as to permit passage of the partial head when said element is in one position, and when given a partial rotation to prevent passage therethrough of said partial head to hold said pin to said holsters.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having alined center pin receiving openings and retaining shoulders adjacent saidopeningsrespectivel of a connecting center pin extending throug said openings, said pin having a head member at one end having engagement with the corresponding retaining shoulder, the pin at the other end being provided with lateral projections; a retaining element having shouldered engagement with the shoulder of the corresponding holster, said retaining element having an opening through which the corresponding end of the pin is adapted to pass when said element is in one position and which when given a partial rotation is engaged by said projections to retain said pin; and a U-shaped locking element embracing said pin and having the arms thereof extending into the opening of said retaining clement to lock said element and pin against relative rotation.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having alined center pin receiving openings and retaining shoulders adjacent said openings respectively of a connecting center pin extending through said openings, said pin having a head member at one end having shouldered engagement with the corresponding retaining shoulder, the pin at the other end being provided with lateral projections; and a retaining element having shouldered engagement with the shoulder of the corresponding bolster, said retaining clement having an openin through which the corresponding end of t e in is adapted to pass when said element is 1n one position and with which, when said element is given a partial rotation, said projections are adapted to have shouldered engagement to retain said pin, said retaining element being adjustable in height to compensate for wear of the parts and maintain the proper spacing between the head member and shoulder of the corresponding bolster.

In car construction, the combination with body andl truck holsters having alined center pin receiving openings and retaining shoulders adjacent said openings respectively; of a connecting center pin extending through said openings and having a head at one end having shouldered engagement with the retaining shoulder of one of said holsters, a portion of the shank of said pin extending through the other bolster being of reduced cross section and the cross sectional outline of said shank portion and the shape of the corresponding opening of the bolster being such as to prevent relative rotation of the pin and corresponding bolster, said end of the pin outwardly of the reduced portion be.- ing enlarged and of oblong cross section; and
a sectional retaining element composed of a plurality of ring-like shlns, each having an oblong opening through which Said enlarged section of the pin is adapted to pass When alned therewith, said sectional element When rotated to bring said openings out of alinement With said enlarged section providing shouldered engagement With said enlargement to retain said pin.
