This invention relates to improvements in car construction, and more particularly means for connecting the body and truck bolsters of cars.
One object of the invention is to provide simple and etficient center pin means for connecting the body and truck bolsters of railway cars, which may be readily applied to and removed from the bolsters, and which is of rugged design, ofiering maximum resistance against shearing and having great tensile strength.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide sectional center pins for railway car bolsters, which may be readily applied and removed, having means associated there with for preventing accidental disengagementfrom the bolsters,wherein the sectional pin includes a member headed at opposite ends and having shouldered engagement with both bolsters to prevent separation of the bolsters, and a member having locking engagement with one of the bolsters and the first named member to prevent relative rotation between the assembled pin and said bolsters to prevent accidental disengagement of the pin, and wherein one of the head members of the pin and the pin receiving opening of the corresponding bolster are of such shape in cross section that the head may be inserted therethrough while in one position, but is prevented from passing therethrough when given a partial turn, and wherein the members forming the pin each have shank portions disposed in the pin receiving openings together defining the complete shank of the pin, which complete shank is of maximum diameter where it extends through the adjacent portions of the bolsters to present maXi- 4o mum resistance against shearing.

In the drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a body bolster of a railway car illustrating my improvements in connection therewith. Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View corresponding substantially to the line 22 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a vertical sectional View, substantially at right angles to the sectional view shown in Figure 2. And- Figure 4 is a horizontal, transverse sectional View corresponding substantially to the line 44= of Figure 2. I In said drawings, '10 indicates the body bolster and 11 the cooperating truck bolster of a railway car. The body bolster as shown is provided with the usual projecting bearing member 12 at the bottom side thereof which cooperates with a bearing block 13 mounted in a pocket 14 at the top of the truck bolster. The cooperating bearing portions of the member 12 and the block 13 are of substantially spherical form. The block 13 of the truck bolster is provided with the usual upstanding central annular flange 15 which engages within a seat 16 on the bodybolster.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the body and truck bolsters with vertically alined center pin receiving openings, the opening of the body bolster being indicated by 17 and that of the truck bolster by 18. The opening in the body bolster is of substantially circular cross section and of the same diameter at the top and bottom. Above the opening 17, the body bolster is provided with a pocket 19 of larger size than the opening 17 thereby providing an annular shoulder 20 at the upper end of the opening in the body bolster. As most clearly shown in Figures 2 and 4, the upper end portion of the opening 18 of the truck bolster corresponds in diameter to the opening 17 of the body bolster and is also of circular cross section. At the lower end, the
. opening l8'is of reduced cross section, as indicated at 21. At diametrically opposite sides of the reduced portion 21 of the opening 18, the truck bolster is provided with vertically disposed slots 2222, which commu nicate with the reduced portion 21 of said opening. The slots 22, as shown most clearly in Figure 4, are relatively wide and have curved outer walls which preferably register with the opposed curved wall portions of the enlarged section of the opening 18. The pin member A comprises a central shank portion 25 which extends throu 'h the o of both of the bolsters. The sides of the shank of the 25 member A, which are located adjacent the slottedportions 22 of the truck bolster are flat asindicated at 28-28. Above the reducedv section 27 of the shank of the member A, the
opposite sides of the shank are vertically rean comedi ns indicated at 29*29, the inner walls oftheirecessed portions being continuations of thefiat surface portions 28-28. At the bottom. and, the shank of the member A is providedlwmh a pair of laterally projecting zaxflangesor lugs 30--30, which are disposed at diametrically opposite sides thereof corresponding to those sides which have the curved surface portions. The lugs 30 form a bottom held for the member A and are adapted to aaxcooperate with the shoulders 24 of the truck bolster to prevent said pin from moving upwardl The lug members 30 are of such a simht when the member A is turned to I the lugs with the slots 22 of the truck the lugs will pass freely through said slots. The locking member B is of generally U- shaped form having a pair of vertically dispomd leg 31-31 connected by a transverse section 32 at the upper end thereof. The transverse section 32 is adapted to engage the upper end of the member A. The leg membomflL-tll embrace the shank portion of the member A and extend through the openings of bnthbolsters, each leg being of such a cross section as to fit within the cut away portions 29 atop 'te sides of the member A and also fit the s ots 22 of the truck bolster. As most clearly shown in Figure 4, the leg members have flat faces on the inner sides thereof which bear directly on the flat surface portions 28 of theshank- 25 of the member A. The outer surfaoes of the leg members 31-31 are curved to correspond to the curvature of the opening 17 of the body bolster and also the enlarged portion of the opening 18 of the truck bolster. The leg members 31, together with the shank portion of the member A, form the complete shank of the center pin and substantially fill the opening 17 and the larger portion of the opening 18 of the truck bolster, thereby providing maximum resistance against shear. In this connection, it is pointed out that by forming the openings of the bolsters of greatest diameter at the portions where-the center bearing is located, a pin member of maximum diameter and strength is accommodated.
In applying my improved center pin member to the bolsters of a railway car, the member A is first applied by inserting the same through the body bolster from the top, the head at the bottom end formed by the lugs 30 being: passed through the center pin receiving openings. When assembling the member A with the bolsters, the ln s 30 are registered with the slots 22 of t e truck bolster. lVhen the pin member A has been inserted to such an extent that the flanges 30 thereof are disposed below the shoulders 24 of the truck bolster, the pin member is given a turn about its axis through an angle of 90, so as to register the lugs 30 with the shoulders 24, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 4. When the parts are in the ition last referred to, the locking member is appliedby inserting the same through the top of the body bolster also; The legs 31-31 of the locking member are inserted between the shank of the member A and the walls of the pin receiving openings of the bolsters and the bottom ends of said legs are passed through the slots 22 and engage between the flange members 30 forming the head at the lower end of the member A. As will be evident, by engagement. of the legs 31 with the flanges 30 relative rotation of the members A and B is prevented. Further, by locking engagement of the legs with the slots 22 of the truck bolster, relative rotation of the assembled pin and the truck bolster is also prevented. By locking the pin to the truck bolster in the manner referred to all danger of disengagement of the lugs 30 from the shoulders 24 is prevented.
The members A and B are both removed through the top of the body bolster when it is desired to separate the bolsters or remove the pin therefrom. In order to facilitate the removal of the locking member B, I provide an eye member 34 at the upper end'thereof, as most clearly shown in Figure 3. In removing the centerpin, the member B is first withdrawn through the opening of the body bolster. This permits rotation of the member A. The latter is then turned to such a position that the lugs 3030 at the bottom end thereof register with the slots 2222 of the truck bolster. When in this position, the member A is readily withdrawn by lifting the same through the body bolster.
From the preceding description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be evident that I have provided an exceedingly simple and eficient center pin composed of a main pin member and a locking element, both of which'may be inserted through the same bolster and the head of which may be interlocked with the other bolster, in this particular case the truck bolster. Although my invention is herein shown as being especially adapted to be locked to the truck bolster, it will be evident that the parts may be reversed so that both members of the pin may be inserted through the truck bolster and locked to the body bolster against rotation with re spect to the same.
l have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, but the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and'modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In car construction, the combination,
with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin openings, each bolster being provided with a shoulder adjacent its opening; of a center pin comprising a plurality of members each having a shank portion eX- tending through the openings of said bolsters, one of said members having heads at opposite ends thereof having engagement with the shoulders ofthe bolsters, the shape of one of the heads cooperating with the shoulder of one of said bolsters and the cross section of the opening adjacent said last named shoulder being such that said head may be inserted therethrough while in one position, but is prevented from passing therethrough when given a partial turn, and the other member having the shank portions thereof embracing the shank of the first named member and having locking engagement with said last named bolster to hold the assembled pin against rotation with respect to said bolster and being engageable with said first named member by application through the other bolster.

In car construction, the combination wi h body and truck bolsters having alined center pin openings, each bolster being provided with a shoulder adjacent its opening; of a center pin comprising a pair of members, each having a shank portion extending through said openings, said members being insertible respectively through the same bolster, one of said members having shouldered engagement at one end with said last named bolster and having means at the other end thereof adapted to pass through the openings of both bolsters and cooperating with the other bolster, said means comprising laterally projecting flange members adapted to register with the shoulders of said last named bolster, the cross section of the opening adj acent said last named shoulder being such that said projecting flange members may be inserted therethrough while in one position but are prevented from passing therethrough when given a part 1 turn to register the flanges with said sioulder, and said other member I having engagement with said flanged end of the first named member and the corresponding bolster to lock said first named member against rotation with respect to said bolster after being turned to register the flange members thereof with said shoulder and holding theassembled pin against rotation with respect to said bolster.
3. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings and eacli having. a shoulder adjacent its opening, one of said openings having a portion thereof of reduced cross section, and the opening of th other bolster being of larger cross section than said reduced portion; of a center pin member having heads at opposite ends thereof having shouldered engagement with the shoulders of said bolsters, and a shank eX tending through said openings, the shape of the head at one end of the pin and the cross section of said reduced portion of said opening being such that said head may be inserted therethrough while in one position but is prevented from passing therethrough when given a partial turn; and a locking member having a shank portion extending through the openings of said-bolsters, said locking member being insertible through the same bolster through which the first named pin member is insertible and having engagement with the pin member and the walls of said reduced portion of said opening to hold said assembled pin against rotationwith respect to the corresponding bolster, the shank portion of said first and second named members together completely filling the remainder of said center pin openings and forming the complete shank of the center pin.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alincd center pin receiving openings, and each bolster having a shoulder adjacent its opening, the opening of one of said bolsters being of uniform diameter throughout and the opening of the other bolster having a portion thereof of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of said first named opening, and the remaining portion of reduced cross section, said bolster being slotted at opposite sides of said portion of reduced cross section of said opening, said slots communicating with said opening; of a center pin member having a head at one end of relatively larger size than said opening of uniform diameter and having shouldered engagement with the shoulder adjacent thereto, said member having a cut-away head portion at the other end presenting flange portions, said head and flange portions being of such across section that the same will pass through the opening of reduced size and the slots when the flanges are registered with said slots, and have shouldered engagement with the shoulders adjacent said reduced portion of the openin when given a partial turn to regis- 90 ter sai flanges with the shoulders; and a locking member having arms insertible within the openings of said bolsters, said arms embracing the first named member and extending through said slots of the bolster havin the opening of reduced cross section and in erlocking with the flanges of said first named member to prevent relative rotation of said member with respect to said last named bolster.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings, each bolster having a retaining shoulder adjacent the outer end of its opening, the retaining shoulder of one of said bolsters being formed by a pair of diametrically opposed lugs projecting into the opeinng of said bolster; of
a two part center pin having shouldered engagement at opposite ends with the shoul- 59 ders of said bolsters respectively to prevent separation of said bolsters, said parts extending through the openings of both bolsters and together forming the complete shank of the two part pin, said complete shank of the pin being of such a size and cross section as to substantially fit the in receivin openings of the bolsters, one 0% the parts 0 the pin at that end of the pin having shouldered engagement with the bolsters having the lugs,
being notched at diametrically opposite sides to accommodate said lugs, the shape of the end of said part outwardly of said notched portion and the cross section of the opening of said last named bolster at said lugs being such that said end of said part of the pin will pass therethrough while in one position but is prevented from passing therethrough when given a partial turn.
