Description

SCISSORS Filed April 15, 1929 1?. w 'NVENTOR Hi5 ATTORNEY tiously taken up without dismantling or disfully described and claimed.
Patented Apr. 15, 193% I entrain stares mwmv-r ma num.
I JOHN M. woYTHAL, or CHICAGOQILLINOIS sorssons Application filed April '15,
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in scissors and more particularly with reference to the connection between the blades thereof and'has for its prin- 5 cipal object 'the provision of an improved construction. of this character which will be {highly efiicient in use and. economical in manufacture. i Among the several objects of this invention 10 is to provide an efiective connection between the blades of a scissors whereby the blades will be held in close proximity with respect toeach other thereby assuring a more efficient and positive cutting connection of the blades 15v when manipulated.
A still further object of the inventionis to provide a connection between the blades of a scissors whereby play between the blades of the scissors maybe conveniently and expedi connecting the blades'of the scissors.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more Theinvention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction, and in'which: I Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a scissors "embodying the invention; 1 Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional detail Y view ofthe same'taken substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 .is a fragmentary sectional detail view taken substantially on line 3+3 of Fig. 2.
In attaining the objects of the invention herein set-forth it is also an additional object of the invention, which results from the siml plicity of the construction of the invention,
to provide a connection between the blades of a scissors which may be easily adjusted by one other than a mechanic ora person skilled inthe art. To accomplish this and other objects ofthe invention and to further understand the utility of the invention I'will first describe the'parts which comprise an ordinary scissors of a conventional type.
A scissors of the ordinary conventional type includes two blade members 10 and with the usual cutting edges 13.
23 of the adjacent'hub lt. 3 i
' 1 the stud.
192s. Seria1N'o.355,213.
These blade members include handles 12 whereby to effectivelyv operate the. blades.
The blade members 10 and 11 arearra-nged in a posltion for shearing or cutting connec-' tion relatively to each ther and are-provided.
- To accomplish the many objects ofmy vention I provideineach of the blade mem-f bers at'a portionrwhich I desire to term the hub 14, openings 15 which register with each other when the blade members arearranged in the position illustratedinFig. 2. Preferably though not necessarily. from a fshort piece of tube I provide a sleeve 16 which is adapted when positioned in the openings 15 to snugly fit in such openings, The
inner end portion of the-sleeve has its end edges 1'? turned inwardly to providean "annular shoulder 18 defining a central opening 19. The-outer edges 21 of the sleeve are turned outwardly toprovide-a bearing bead 22 which bears against theadjacentsurface 7 Preferably though not necessarllyfrorn 'a short piece of'tube I provideasecond sleeve 24:. This sleeve 24: is of a diameter which permits-insertion of'the sleeve through the opening 19 whereby to dispose its inner end a short-distance from the plane of the outer end-of the sleeve'16 as at-25. Theouter end -of this sleeve is likewise turned over to pro- 7 vide a bearing .bead 26 which is adaptedto bear'against the adjacent surface 27 of the adjacent hub 14, -The sleeve 24 when inserted through the opening 19 into the sleeve 16 provides a stud around which is removably 'mounted an expansion spring28. This expansion spring 28'is held in place and compressed against theseat 18 by means of a screw element 29 inserted into theinner end of the sleeve 24. v While I have shown thespring is compressed and retained in posi-v tion by a screwelement it is obvious that this screw element may be in the form of a head bearing rivet sweated or otherwise fittedinto the sleeve24, or may be a head formed on From the will be manifest that by the provision of the in the drawing that 2 description herein set ljforth it.
expansion spring one end will bear against the shoulder 18 and the other end against the head 30 of the screw element 29 and when compressed-willeffect a frictional fit between the two blades of the scissors whereby to provide a more efficient shearing or cutting action when the blades are manipulated. V
7 It will be seen from the description herein taken in connection with the accompanying drawing that the parts maybe easily adjusted or taken apart as may be required.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred formlof construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable'of variation and modification, without departing fromthe spirit of the'invention. I, therefore, do not wishto be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself ofsuch Variation and modifications ascome Within the scope of the appended claims.
' 'Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. Means for providing a connection between two cooperating cutting elements having registering openings comprising two members arrangedinopposlng relation with respect to each other lnserted 1n sald openings and each provided withan enlarged head adapted to bear against adjacent surface of the cutting elements, one of said members being formed at its end opposite its head to provide a shoulder, a resilientmember mounted between said members and having one; end engaging theshoulder, and meanscarriedby the'other of the members forcomprising said resilient member so as to yieldably urge said members toward eachother and-bear the heads thereof against said adj a 7 cent surfaces. 7 r i 2. Means for'providing a connection betweentwo cooperating cutting elements includinga resilient-member, and two members arranged in telescopic relation with respect to each other and inclosing said resilient member and having enlarged portions bearing againstadjacent surfaces of the-cut- V ting; elements and means cooperating with one of'said members and with said resilient memberto provide a connection between said members, said means-also being adapted to compress said resilient member in holding said members in said connected relation;
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.- JOHN M. WOYTHAL,
